The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: When injured by a bow or crossbow, if the arrowhead is poisoned and enters the skin and vessels, it causes shortness of breath, leading to death within moments. Symptoms include lockjaw (trismus), dry lips, cessation of blood circulation, abdominal fullness with inability to speak, and a state resembling drunkenness; such cases before death are considered incurable. However, if Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) show cyanotic stasis, and blood flows out immediately, accompanied by intense heat at the wound margin and the ability to open the mouth and speak, the patient may survive. There are three types of poisoned arrows: In the Lingnan region, ethnic minorities use copper heated until charred for arrowheads. Secondly, in areas north of the Lingling Mountains, juices from various snakes and insects are placed in tubes to soak the arrowheads. Injury from these two types leads to rapid swelling, boiling, and ulceration, resulting in death upon mere skin penetration. Only when pigs or dogs are shot do they survive despite being incapacitated, due to their consumption of feces. If humans are struck by such arrows, one must immediately ingest feces or drink fecal juice, and apply it topically to the wound for recovery. Otherwise, rescue is impossible after a brief moment. If the arrow strikes a broad area of the body, the patient may gradually recover though severely ill, without necessarily dying; however, if it strikes near the chest or abdomen, immediate treatment is required. Any delay allows the toxin to enter the interior, making it incurable.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Formulas by Ge Hong) states: Formula for sudden poisoning by an arrow:
Crush indigo plants (Isatis root/leaf), squeeze out the juice, drink it, and apply it thinly to the wound. If indigo is unavailable, soak blue cloth or dark blue fabric, squeeze out the juice, drink it, and also pour the juice into the wound.
Another formula: Take bamboo sap (Zhuli) several he up to one or two sheng.
Another formula: Boil lotus root, drink the juice; the more, the better.
Another formula: Fill the wound with salt, and moxa-burn over the salt.
The *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) contains formulas for poisoned arrows:
Decoct Rehmannia root juice (Dihuang Zhi), form pills, and take them for 100 days; the arrow should then be expelled.
Another formula: Boose reed rhizome juice (Lugen Zhi), drink one or two sheng.
The *Duan Ju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) contains formulas for sudden arrow poisoning:
Pound indigo plants to obtain juice, drink it, and also irrigate the wound and arrow track; obtaining indigo juice will cause the patient to regain consciousness.
Another formula: Take Polygonum multiflorum seed powder (Puhuang) about two he; blood stasis will also be discharged.
Another formula: Take sesame juice (Mazi Zhi) several sheng.
The *Fan Wang Fang* (Formulas by Fan Wang) for treating arrow injuries:
Dig up kudzu root (Gegen), eat it as usual food; consuming large amounts is preferable. (The *Qian Jin Fang* suggests drinking kudzu juice.)
Another formula: Equal parts of dried ginger (Ganjiang), indigo plant (Lanqing), and salt; pound and mix, then apply to the wound; all toxins will be expelled.
Another formula: Powder realgar (Xionghuang), apply to the wound; the wound will boil with sweat flowing out, leading to recovery.
The *Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Proven Formulas) for treating weapon wounds that physicians cannot cure:
Peel mulberry white bark (Sangbaipi), remove the black outer layer, wrap the wound with it, allowing the mulberry white bark juice to enter the wound. In winter, use the juice from mulberry root bark.
