*The Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: In severe cholera with profuse vomiting and diarrhea, the stomach and intestines become deficient. This may lead to sweating, a pulse that is faint and nearly imperceptible, and cold extremities. This condition is referred to as "Si Ni" (Four Coldness / Four Reversals).
*Ge Shi Fang* provides a prescription for cases where cold reversals in the hands and feet appear first: Moxibustion at a distance of one *fu* above the medial malleolus of each foot, seven moxa cones per foot.
It further states: For treating persistent diarrhea and cold reversals in the extremities: One hundred seeds of Zanthoxyli Fructus (Huajiao), one Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi), boiled in three sheng of water until one sheng remains; taken once.
*Yi Men Fang* treats cholera with unceasing vomiting and diarrhea, mental restlessness, and cold reversals in the four limbs:
Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Houpo), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao), Radix Ginseng (Renshen), Poria Cocos (Baizhu) (each two liang), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang) (three liang).
Boil in six sheng of water until two sheng remain; divide into two doses.
*Duan Ju Fang* treats cholera with excessive cold, cold and厥 (jue) extremities, and an imperceptible pulse. It is primarily treated with Zhuyu Si Ni Tang (Evodia Four Coldness Decoction):
Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu) (two sheng), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Shaoyao) (two liang each), Cortex Cinnamomi (Guixin) (four liang), Radix Asari (Xixin), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang) (half jin), Herba Tectariae (Tongcao) (quantity unspecified).
These eight ingredients are boiled together with four sheng of water and four sheng of clear wine until three sheng remain; divide into four doses.
*Lu Yan Fang*: For cholera with vomiting and diarrhea accompanied by sweating, free urination, or diarrhea with undigested food, absence of heat inside and outside, a faint and nearly imperceptible pulse, or aversion to cold, Si Ni Tang (Four Coldness Decoction) is used:
Radix Ginseng (Renshen) (three liang), Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus (Ganjiang) (three liang), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi) (two liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) (three liang).
These four ingredients are boiled in six sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain; divide into three doses. This is effective if muscle twitching, cold sweat, and vomiting occur. (*Duan Ju Fang* is identical.)
*Ge Shi Fang* treats severe cholera where the patient cannot speak: One jin of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang), sliced, boiled in seven sheng of water until two sheng remain; divide into three doses.
Another prescription: Drink a small amount of Bamboo Sap (Zhuli).
Another prescription: Boil a large handful of Reed Catkin (Lupengrong) strongly and drink two sheng; this will cure the condition.
Another prescription: Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatus (Ganjiang) (three liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) (one liang), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi) (one liang).
Boil in three sheng of water until one sheng remains; divide into three doses.
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Cholera leading to a critical state occurs because undigested food combines with internal cold qi. The patient may not yet have vomited or had diarrhea, or even if they have, the cold qi has not subsided.
*Ji Yao Fang* treats cholera with vomiting, mental distress, abdominal distension, panting, approaching death, and no relief after a day:
Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (Houpo) (four liang), Cortex Cinnamomi (Guixin) (four liang), Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang) (ten liang).
Boil in eight sheng of water until three sheng remain; divide into three doses.
*Ge Shi Fang* treats cholera refractory to various treatments, characterized by extreme irritability, approaching death, and urgent abdominal distension: Burn the menstrual cloth of an unmarried girl to ash, take a small amount with wine; immediate recovery ensues.
It also states: A mysterious moxibustion method for reviving those near death from cholera: Measure horizontally across the patient's mouth, bend the measuring object, and extend it from the heart center (Jiuwei CV15) downwards. Moxa five cones at the lower end of this measurement... [text incomplete].
Another prescription: Moxibustion on the spine, aligning the measuring object centrally over the heart. Also, moxa seven cones on each side, one cun lateral to the spine. This constitutes three points on the abdomen and back.
It also states: Hua Tuo's method for reviving those who have died from cholera, involving calling the soul from the roof, for cases where all other treatments fail: Place the patient prone, extend arms opposite each other... [text incomplete].
Another prescription: For unceasing diarrhea with spasms moving into the abdomen and approaching death: Three units of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Shengjiang), crushed, boiled in half a sheng of wine for three to four boils; taken in one dose.
