(Hanai-shi possesses two copies of *Ishinpō* (Medical Heart Formulas). One is a scroll format, likely the original manuscript compiled and presented by Tanba Yasutaira during the Eikan era, with some parts supplemented from other editions; the end of the volume contains a postscript by Female Medical Doctor Mitsushige. The other is a glued-leaf format, which is a copy of the scroll version, allowing for the completion of illegible sections in the scroll version due to corrosion. Regrettably, this glued-leaf copy suffered collateral damage in the winter of the Year of the Rabbit (Yimao), whereas the scroll version was preserved intact today due to official woodblock printing efforts, which seems no coincidence. However, the glued-leaf copy records the date of compilation/presentation and Yasutaira's age at death, information not found in other books, making it invaluable for verification. Therefore, these two postscripts are now facsimile-printed for enthusiasts. Genroku Toshiyuki Fukuyama, 5th day of the 5th month.)
The collation and publication of this book were incomplete when, unfortunately, my predecessor (Chen Yan) passed away. Shortly after, my predecessor (Chen Jie) also followed. In our grief, we feared that the engraving would be delayed and left unfinished, failing to repay our predecessors in the underworld. Later, we assumed our hereditary posts and, though ignorant and presumptuous, dared to take on the responsibility of correcting the text. With the diligent assistance of several colleagues, we finally completed the work. Among them, Kojima Hisamasa, Takashima Hisatsugu, Segawa Zensen, Mori Tachibana, and Sato Tsunenobu contributed most significantly. Subsequently, Hisamasa and Zensen passed away, while Hisatsugu and Tachibana took over the responsibilities exclusively. This book was compiled approximately nine hundred years ago; its cited works and Tang dynasty manuscripts are mostly lost today. The versions relied upon may differ, or later editions may have been edited, making verification difficult. Moreover, there are obscure characters, unclear meanings, broken bamboo slips, and faded ink, rendering some parts irrecoverable. We dare not make rash interpretations. Hanai-shi also possesses another old copy from the Enkyo era; volumes 25, 26, and 28 were supplemented by Waki Narasune in the fourth year of Enkyo. Comparing these with the current edition reveals discrepancies, which are recorded accordingly. The end of volume 30 in the Sakurayu notes records the compilation date and Yasutaira's death date, supplementing historical records, so they are included for reference. Sixteen volumes from the Ninna Imperial Palace collection and four scattered volumes from old collections also show variations, all listed herein. Variants such as "Wei" written as [character], "Shuai" as [character], "Shu" as "Shu" (summer), "Fu" as [character], "Zao" as [character], "Gou" as [character], and interchangeable radicals like Wood/Hand or Head variants are textual heterographies unrelated to meaning, so detailed explanations are omitted. Several notes from Sakurayu are copied from the original manuscript and appended. Regarding the backing paper, some use contemporary documents, others use annotated calendars. While ancient fragments are numerous, those irrelevant to the main text are excluded to avoid clutter. Alas, since our predecessors undertook this task, through changing seasons and feelings of life and death, there are moments too poignant to recall. Chen Yan and Chen Jie admit their limited knowledge, insufficient to fully grasp our ancestors' achievements. Yet, seeing this rare treasure, unseen for centuries, shine anew allows us to trace the origins of medical formulas, illuminating the medical path. This reflects not only the great merit of our predecessors' dedication but also the benevolent reign of the current dynasty, promoting longevity and virtue for all.
