In women, the Chi (Cun Cun) pulse is typically vigorous, and the pulse on the right hand is often larger; these are normal physiological phenomena. If the Kidney pulse is faint and choppy, the pulse within the Chi position behind the Guan (Gate) position on the left hand is floating, or the Liver pulse is deep and tense, or the Chi pulse is slippery but irregular and intermittent, these are all signs of amenorrhea or menstrual irregularity. If the three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) on both hands show equal depth and force in their floating and sinking qualities, and the pulse comes smoothly, evenly, and peacefully, without other pathological symptoms, yet menstruation has ceased, this indicates pregnancy. A Chi pulse that is slippery, large, rapid, and vigorous also indicates pregnancy. It is further said that a Hong Da (Vigorous and Large) pulse at the left Chi position indicates a male fetus, while a Shen Shi (Deep and Solid) pulse at the right Chi position indicates a female fetus. Another view states that a Hong Da pulse indicates a female fetus. The Classic states: "When Yin pulses beat distinctly separate from Yang, it is called having a child." This means that the Yin pulse at the inner Chi position beats forcefully against the finger, containing characteristics of Yang pulses. When Yin and Yang interact vigorously, conception can occur. For females before the onset of Tian Gui (the essence and blood related to reproductive function), diseases belong to the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) channel; after its onset, they belong to the Jueyin (Terminal Yin) channel; after its cessation, they belong to the Taiyin (Greater Yin) channel; and diseases related to pregnancy and childbirth belong to the Jueyin channel. For married women and unmarried girls suffering from Shanghan (Cold Damage) febrile diseases or various conditions involving cold-heat qi stagnation, one must inquire about the status of their menstruation. After childbirth, one must inquire about the presence and quantity of Choulu (lochia).
If the pulse movement is felt entering the birth canal, there is a fetus. A Chi pulse that is slippery and vigorous is a fetal pulse. A floating and Hong Da (Vigorous and Large) pulse at the left Chi position indicates a male fetus; a Shen Shi (Deep and Solid) pulse at the right Chi position indicates a female fetus. A slippery pulse at the Guan (Gate) position indicates a male fetus. A Da (Large) pulse at the left Cun Kou (Radial Artery) position indicates a male fetus; a Shen Xi (Deep and Fine) pulse at the right Cun Kou position indicates a female fetus. A Hong Da (Vigorous and Large) pulse in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel indicates a male fetus; a Hong (Vigorous) pulse in the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel indicates a female fetus. Yang-type pulses generally indicate males, and Yin-type pulses generally indicate females. The appearance of Yang characteristics within Yin pulses indicates a male; the appearance of Yin characteristics within Yang pulses indicates a female. A distinct movement in the Hand-Shaoyin Heart pulse indicates pregnancy. If both Chi positions are Hong Da (Vigorous and Large), it indicates twin boys; if both Chi positions are Shen Shi (Deep and Solid), it indicates twin girls. An inverted/rebellious pulse pattern on the left hand indicates triplets of boys; a smooth/compliant pulse pattern on the right hand indicates triplets of girls. If the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions are consistent in size and speed, responding to each other uniformly, this indicates one boy and one girl. A pulse that is slippery and rapid indicates a three-month gestation. If the pulse is rapid but not scattered, it indicates five months' gestation. One beat followed by one pause at the Guan position represents one month; one beat followed by two pauses represents two months. By deducing from this method, one will rarely err. The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) connects with the Yangming Stomach pulse. A slippery and rapid pulse indicates nine months of pregnancy. If the Chi pulse becomes Shen Xi (Deep and Fine) yet slippery, or exhibits Li Jing (Departing from the Normal Channel) characteristics, accompanied by pain felt at night, delivery will occur during the day.
