Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Poria (Fuling), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (wine-fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (wine-fried), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), Xanthii Fructus (Canger), Arisaema Cum Bile (Dannanxing).
When headache occurs frequently, it is called Toufeng (Headwind). When the pain is biased to one side, it is called Pian Tou Feng (Hemicrania), which should be primarily treated with this formula.
Zhu Danxi stated: "Damp Earth generates Phlegm; Phlegm generates Heat; Heat generates Wind." Therefore, Toufeng (Headwind) is more common in people who are addicted to alcohol. There are two explanations for why the pain is biased to one side: One explanation states that Qi and Blood have deficiencies and excesses; the left side belongs to the Blood aspect, and the right side belongs to the Qi aspect. Another explanation states that the upper half of the body is governed by Heaven's Qi. Since Heaven is deficient in the northwest, when all parts are affected by pathogenic factors, the right side suffers more severely. In this formula, Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Poria (Fuling), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) constitute Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) for treating Phlegm. The addition of Arisaema Cum Bile (Dannanxing) for its drying property serves entirely to treat Phlegm. Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) utilize their bitter-cold nature to treat Heat. Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), and Xanthii Fructus (Canger) are all herbs for treating Wind. Because only Wind-type herbs can reach the highest peaks (the head), they are used here.
Tubulae Flos (Xinyi), Arisaema Cum Bile (Dannanxing), Xanthii Fructus (Canger), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (wine-fried), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong).
For Toufeng (Headwind) accompanied by nasal congestion, this formula is indicated.
Nasal breath connects with Heaven; it is the orifice through which Clear Yang Qi passes. When Wind is excessive, Qi becomes obstructed, causing nasal congestion. The *Neijing* states: "Clear Yang emerges from the upper orifices"; it also states: "Herbs with thin aromas promote dispersion." Tubulae Flos (Xinyi), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), and Xanthii Fructus (Canger) are all herbs with clear, light, and thin aromas, thus they can unblock the nasal orifices. Arisaema Cum Bile (Dannanxing) is added as an assistant to awaken (resolve) Wind-Phlegm. Wine-fried Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) is added as an assistant to clear Wind-Heat.
Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) (1 liang 5 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (4 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang) (processed, 2 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) (3 pieces), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu) (pits removed), Poria (Fuling) (each 3 liang).
Grind together into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine before meals.
When severe Cold pathogens invade the Fengfu acupoint (GV16), causing headache and stiffness/tightness of the neck tendons, this formula is indicated.
The Fengfu acupoint (GV16) is located at the back of the head and is governed by the Du Meridian (Conception Vessel of the Back). Cold is the severe and congealing Qi of Heaven and Earth, thus causing stiffness of the neck tendons. Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang) and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) are pungent and hot substances that can disperse True Cold. Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) are herbs with thin aromas that can reach the highest peak (head). Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu) nourishes the Yin of the Du Meridian, and Poria (Fuling) harmonizes the Yang of the Du Meridian. According to the principles of Hetu (River Map), odd numbers represent Yang, and even numbers represent Yin. This formula is named Sanwuqi San (Three-Five-Seven Powder) because its meaning lies in tonifying Yang.
