Pinelliae Rhizoma (processed with ginger juice), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (white pith removed), Hordei Fructus Germinatus (each 0.75 fen), Ginseng Radix, Panacis Quinquefolii Radix (stir-fried), Astragali Membranacei Radix (honey-fried), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (soaked in rice washing water for seven days), Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Poria, Mume Fructus (stir-fried), Alismatis Rhizoma (each 0.5 fen), Phellodendri Cortex (0.15 fen), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (0.2 fen)
This formula is indicated for headache and vertigo caused by Phlegm-Jue syndrome (a condition where phlegm obstructs the flow of Qi and causes sudden reversal or collapse).
Phlegm-Jue refers to the counterflow of damp-phlegm ascending upwards; when phlegm-Qi rebels upward, it creates excess in the head, thus causing headache. Vertigo here refers to the sensation of seeing black spots before the eyes. Li Dongyuan stated: Severe headache is termed Taiyin Phlegm-Jue (phlegm-jue of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian), which cannot be eliminated without Pinelliae Rhizoma. Black vision and spinning dizziness are caused internally by wind-deficiency; Gastrodiae Rhizoma is indispensable for treatment. The sweet-warm nature of Ginseng Radix and Astragali Membranacei Radix can both clear heat-fire and tonify the Middle Jiao. The bitter-sweet nature of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma and Atractylodis Rhizoma can both remove dampness and strengthen the Spleen. Alismatis Rhizoma and Poria can promote urination to drain excessive damp-pathogens. Mume Fructus and Hordei Fructus Germinatus can resolve stagnation of food and fluids. Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens open the appetite and harmonize the Middle Jiao. Phellodendri Cortex is used for its bitter-pungent property to treat dryness caused by "Shaohuo" (deficient fire or latent heat) sinking or accumulating.
Arisaematis Cum Bile Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Platycodonis Radix, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Poria, Scutellariae Radix
This formula is indicated for vertigo caused by Phlegm-Fire.
The generation of phlegm originates from dampness; therefore, Pinelliae Rhizoma and Arisaematis Cum Bile Rhizoma are used to dry dampness, Poria to leach out dampness, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma to strengthen the Spleen to control dampness. The stagnation of phlegm originates from Qi obstruction; therefore, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium is used to regulate Qi, Platycodonis Radix to direct Qi downward, and Aurantii Fructus Immaturus to break up Qi stagnation. When Qi stagnates, it accumulates and becomes excessive; excess Qi transforms into Fire; therefore, Scutellariae Radix is used to purge Fire.
Costi Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Pinelliae Fermentatum, Poria, Amomi Fructus, Ting Flower Bud, Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma
This formula is indicated for vertigo caused by Qi stagnation failing to transport phlegm.
Costi Radix, Ting Flower Bud, Amomi Fructus, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium are used to move Qi. Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and Poria are used to strengthen the Spleen. When the Spleen functions well, phlegm is transported; when Qi moves freely, phlegm moves with it.
