Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, with the white pith removed), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Caodoukou (Fructus Tsaoko), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [each 1 qian]; Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei) [0.4 qian]; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis) [each 0.5 qian]

When clear Qi descends to the lower part and turbid Qi ascends to the upper part, it causes fullness and distension in the chest and diaphragm, along with loose stools or diarrhea. This formula is indicated for such conditions.
The aforementioned pathology arises from dietary injury to the Spleen Qi, resulting in the failure to ascend the clear and descend the turbid. In this formula, Shengma and Chaihu are acrid and warm, ascending the clear Qi; when clear Qi ascends, the Yang Qi becomes smooth. Huangbai is bitter and cold, descending the turbid Qi; when turbid Qi descends, the Yin Qi becomes smooth. Ren Shen, Huangqi, Danggui, and Gancao tonify deficiency; tonifying deficiency ensures the Smoothness of Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi). Banxia and Chenpi facilitate the Diaphragm; facilitating the Diaphragm ensures the Smoothness of Phlegm-Qi. Caodoukou and Shenqu digest food; digesting food ensures the Smoothness of Grain Qi. Hence, it is named "Ascending Yang and Promoting Qi Smoothness."
Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fuling (Poria), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis Orientale), Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae)
When Dampness excessively invades internally, presenting with heaviness of the body and pain in the joints, dry mouth with loss of taste, irregular bowel movements, frequent urination, indigestion, shivering aversion to cold, and an unhappy complexion, this formula is indicated.
Excessive internal Dampness occurs because the Spleen Earth is weak and fails to control Dampness, leading to endogenous Dampness generation. When Dampness flows through the hundred joints, it causes bodily heaviness and joint pain; due to the weakness and decline of the Spleen and Stomach, which fail to transport and transform essential substances (Jingwei), it causes dry mouth and loss of taste. Since the Middle Qi is weak, transmission and transformation become disordered, causing irregular bowel movements, frequent urination, and indigestion. Shivering aversion to cold indicates that Dampness pathogen is dominant; as Dampness is a Yin pathogen, it causes aversion to cold. An unhappy complexion indicates that Yang Qi cannot extend. In this formula, Banxia and Baizhu can dry Dampness. Fuling and Zexie can leach out Dampness. Qianghuo, Duhuo, Fangfeng, and Chaihu can raise and lift the Clear Yang Qi and search out Dampness in the hundred joints. Huanglian is bitter and drying, suitable for treating Damp-Heat. Chenpi is acrid and warm, suitable for regulating Stomach Qi. Ren Shen, Huangqi, and Gancao are used to benefit the Stomach. The sour and astringent nature of Baishaoyao is used to harmonize Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and coordinate the acrid-dispersing properties of Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Chaihu, and Duhuo. Zhang Zhongjing used Shaoyao in Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) also for the purpose of harmonizing Ying Qi. In ancient times, when using acrid-dispersing herbs, sour-astringent herbs were invariably employed to prevent their harshness and severity, analogous to military discipline and restraint.
