Pinellia Rhizoma (one jin, processed) Licorice Radix et Rhizoma (roasted with honey) Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata Cinnamon Ramulus Zingiberis Rhizoma (each five qian) Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma (two qian and five fen)
Take three qian per dose.
This formula is indicated for diarrhea characterized by watery, clear, and cold stools.
"Jiangshui" refers to diarrhea resembling Jiangshui (fermented grain water), which is clear and cold. He Jian stated: Fluids that are clear and cold all belong to Cold syndrome. For Cold syndromes, warming methods should be used; therefore, this formula primarily employs acrid-warm agents. Analyzing its pharmacology: Pinellia Rhizoma and roasted Licorice Radix et Rhizoma can strengthen the Spleen; when the Spleen is strong, it can prevent water-dampness from overflowing; Dried Ginger and Prepared Aconite Root can restore Yang...
Stir-baked Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (three liang) Stir-baked Paeoniae Radix Alba (two liang) Saposhnikoviae Radix (one liang) Stir-baked Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (one and a half liang)
This formula is indicated for intractable abdominal pain accompanied by diarrhea.
The responsibility for diarrhea lies with the Spleen, while the responsibility for pain lies with the Liver; the Liver's condition is Excess, and the Spleen's condition is Deficiency. Spleen Deficiency combined with Liver Excess leads to painful diarrhea. In this formula, stir-baked Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma strengthens the Spleen; stir-baked Paeoniae Radix Alba drains (softens) the Liver; stir-baked Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium awakens the Spleen; Saposhnikoviae Radix disperses Liver Qi. One might ask: Why is painful diarrhea not attributed to food stagnation? I reply: Abdominal pain due to food stagnation alleviates after defecation. Since diarrhea here is accompanied by unrelieved pain, it is attributed to "Earth failing and Wood encroaching" (Spleen Deficiency with Liver Hyperactivity).
Schisandrae Fructus (two liang, stir-fried until fragrant) Evodiae Fructus (five qian, stir-fried)
Grind together into powder. Take two qian per dose.
This formula is indicated for Kidney Deficiency causing diarrhea occurring after midnight (Zi hour).
The Kidney governs urination and defecation, opening into the two orifices, and receives influence during Hai and Zi hours. When the Kidney is deficient and weak, it causes frequent diarrhea after midnight. Schisandrae Fructus has sour-astringent properties; stir-frying enhances its benefit to the Stomach and Intestines. Evodiae Fructus has the function of warming the Middle and lower heating the Lower Jiao; charring enhances its benefit to the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen). When the fire of the Gate of Vitality is vigorous, it generates Earth (Spleen); when Earth is sufficient, diarrhea naturally stops. Sour-astringency generates fluids; when fluids are generated, Kidney essence remains abundant.
Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (stir-fried) Mantis Oötheca (roasted) Dragon Bone (burned to retain nature) Corni Fructus (stir-fried) Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (processed) Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum (steamed in wine, baked)
This formula is indicated for slippery diarrhea due to Kidney Deficiency-Cold.
Deficiency refers to insufficiency of Kidney Essence; Cold refers to decline of the fire of the Gate of Vitality. The Kidney governs urination and defecation; when the Kidney is deficient and cold, it fails to secure and hold, leading to slippery diarrhea. Substances with rich flavors belong to Yin within Yin; therefore, Corni Fructus and Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum are used to tonify Kidney Yin. Acrid-hot substances belong to Yang within Yang; therefore, Zanthoxyli Pericarpium and Prepared Aconite Root are used to strengthen the fire of the Gate of Vitality. Astringent flavors can secure collapse; therefore, Mantis Oötheca and Dragon Bone are used to treat the collapse associated with slippery diarrhea.
