In the late summer season, when damp-heat steams and blazes, presenting with fatigue and heaviness of the four limbs, reduced spirit and vitality, body heat with rapid breathing, vexation, yellow urine, thirst accompanied by spontaneous sweating, and a deficient pulse, this formula is indicated.
The pathogenic factor of Summerheat prevails in summer; by late summer, it combines with Dampness. Therefore, this formula treats both Summerheat and Dampness simultaneously. When Summerheat steams and blazes, the defensive Qi at the exterior is prone to leakage. Since the Middle Qi (Spleen and Stomach Qi) is the source of all Qi, Huang Qi is used to consolidate the exterior and secure the easily leaked Qi; Bai Zhu, Shen Qu, and Gan Cao are used to regulate the Middle Jiao and cultivate the source of Qi; during severe heat, the Lung Metal is affected. Ren Shen, Wu Wei Zi, and Mai Men Dong respectively tonify the Lung, astringe the Lung, and clear Lung heat. These three herbs constitute Sheng Mai San (Pulse-Generating Powder), as stated in the classics: supporting the element that is overcome (i.e., strengthening Earth to generate Metal); when Fire is excessive, Water becomes deficient, so Huang Bo and Ze Xie are added to nourish the source of transformation; when fluids are lost causing thirst, Dang Gui and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) are used to generate Stomach fluids; when Clear Qi fails to ascend, Sheng Ma can lift it; when Turbid Qi fails to descend, the barks (Chen Pi and potentially Fu Ling Pi implied by context or standard composition variations, though text says "two skins") can regulate it; Cang Zhu is used to address the Dampness of late summer.

In summer months, excessive drinking leads to Dampness affecting the Spleen and Stomach. The Clear and Turbid interfere with each other, Yin and Yang Qi rebel, resulting in Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea) and vomiting. This formula is indicated.
The Spleen and Stomach prefer dryness and dislike Dampness; they prefer warmth and dislike Cold. Although it is summer, excessive consumption of cold drinks and icy foods damages them, causing Qi rebellion leading to Huoluan and vomiting. Gan Jiang and Rou Gui warm the Stomach and establish the Middle Jiao; Gan Cao and Xing Ren harmonize the Spleen and regulate Qi. This formula does not treat Summerheat itself, but rather the Spleen and Stomach injured by drinking cold substances during the summer. If the various ailments are not caused by drinking cold, do not rigidly apply this formula for treatment.
