Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma (Zedoary), Bistortae Rhizoma (Polygoni Bistortae Rhizoma) [Jing San Leng] (boiled in vinegar for one *fu* period, 2 liang each), Piperis Nigris Fructus (Black Pepper, 1 liang), Ferulae Resina (Asafoetida, 2 fen, dissolved in vinegar), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Green Tangerine Peel, 3 liang).
Grind all into powder, make into pills, coated with Alum Red (Fan Hong).
For malaria where the mouth loses taste, and there is abdominal pain and distension after eating, named Food Malaria (Shi Nue), this formula is indicated.
Food Malaria refers to malaria caused by food accumulation. The *Neijing* states: "Those that are retained should be attacked," therefore Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, Bistortae Rhizoma, and Ferulae Resina are used to attack the accumulation; the harm of accumulation is that when Qi moves freely it flows, when Qi stagnates it stops, when heated it flows, when cold it knots. Therefore, the acridity of Aurantii Fructus Immaturus is used to move Qi freely, and the warmth of Piperis Nigris Fructus is used to dissipate knots; again, using Alum Red as a coating borrows its Earth nature to support the Spleen and Stomach.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen), Poria (Fu Ling), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root, Gan Cao), Pinelliae Tuberum (Pinellia Rhizome, Ban Xia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Tangerine Peel, Chen Pi), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cang Zhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Hou Po), Pogostemonis Herba (Guang Huo Xiang), Mume Fructus (Wu Mei), Tsaoko Fructus (Cao Guo).
Malaria formed due to damage to the Stomach from irregular diet (hunger or fullness) is named Stomach Malaria (Wei Nue), this formula is indicated.
The *Neijing* states: "The source of Yin lies in the Five Flavors; the Five Palaces of Yin are damaged by the Five Flavors." Thus, hunger makes Stomach Qi weak, and Yin has no source to generate; fullness makes Stomach Qi strong, and the Five Palaces are thereby damaged. This shows that both hunger and fullness can damage the Stomach. When the Stomach is damaged, Ying and Wei become deficient, and Grain Qi becomes disordered. Disorder leads to contention, contention leads to the separation of Zheng (Upright) and Xie (Pathogenic), causing cold and heat to arise, thus forming malaria. The formula contains the sweetness of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Poria, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma to tonify the insufficiency of Stomach Qi; the acridity of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Atractylodis Rhizoma, and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex to pacify the excess of Stomach Qi; the acridity of Pinelliae Tuberum to awaken the Spleen; the fragrance of Pogostemonis Herba to open the Stomach appetite; the sourness of Mume Fructus to...
Atractylodis Rhizoma (soaked in rice water), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (stir-fried with ginger, 1 liang each), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (3 liang, remove white pith), Pogostemonis Herba, Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Shi Chang Pu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (honey-fried/roasted, 1.5 qian each).
Malaria contracted from mountain miasma (Zhan Qi), characterized by alternating chills and fever and heavy sensation throughout the body upon onset, is named Miasma Malaria (Zhang Nue), this formula is indicated.
Mountain miasma belongs to Grain Qi. The *Neijing* states: "Grain Qi connects to the Spleen." Therefore, this formula primarily treats the Spleen. Atractylodis Rhizoma and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex pacify the excessive abundance of the Spleen's Earth; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma regulate the deficiency and excess of the Spleen; Pogostemonis Herba and Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma open the obstructions of the Spleen. The Classics state: "In treating disease, one must seek the root," which is what this refers to. See the Plague Section for further examination.
