Human hair burned to charcoal while retaining its medicinal properties, used in small amounts each time and insufflated into the ear, results in immediate recovery. This reflects the principle of drying dampness for damp conditions. The reason human hair must be used is that it is sourced from the body itself (Jin Qu Zhu Shen) and is self-sufficient. Others such as Alum (Bai Fan), Red Halloysite (Chi Shi Zhi), and Pigeon Droppings (Ge Fen) can also be calcined to ash and used.
Narration: The nose is located among the five sensory organs; diseases there are not aesthetically pleasing. The *Book of Rites* states: "The way of complete adornment, if practiced, will endure far." Therefore, five prescriptions are examined to treat nasal disorders.
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi, 1 liang), Xanthii Fructus Semen (Xin Yi Ren), Xanthii Fructus (Cang Er Zi, stir-fried, 2 qian 5 fen each), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bo He, 5 qian).
Grind all together into powder. Take 2 qian after meals, washed down with scallion decoction.
This prescription governs Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis/Oozing Nose).
Continuous flow of turbid nasal discharge is called Bi Yuan. It arises from wind-heat affecting the brain, damaging Brain Qi, causing Brain Qi to fail in securing fluids, leading to spontaneous leakage. All four ingredients in this prescription are acrid-cool herbs. Acridity can dispel wind, and coolness can dissipate heat. Their qi is light and clear, allowing penetration to the vertex. When the qi at the vertex is clear, brain fluids become secure, and Bi Yuan can be treated.
Xanthii Fructus Semen (Xin Yi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng), Akebiae Caulis (Mu Tong, remove nodes), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin, wash to remove soil), Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma (Ben), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Sheng Ma), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, equal parts).
Grind all together into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with tea liquor.
This prescription governs nasal polyps where breath is obstructed and smell/taste cannot be distinguished.
The nose is the orifice of Qi. Clear Qi leads to a clear nose; hot Qi leads to nasal congestion. Severe heat leads to severe congestion; thus, polyps arise. Treatment should therefore clear the Qi. In this formula, Xin Yi, Xi Xin, Chuan Xiong, Fang Feng, Ben, Sheng Ma, and Bai Zhi are all light, clear, acrid, and fragrant herbs. They can clear Qi, remove heat, disperse pathogens, and benefit orifices. Mu Tong's nature allows internal unblocking; Gan Cao's moderating property allows heat to be purged.
First, slightly puncture the nasal polyp with a needle. Ask the patient to hold a mouthful of water. Then, mix Gualiver Powder (Gua Di San) with a small amount of Moschus (She Xiang), add a few drops of water, and insufflate into the nose. Discharge of saliva indicates recovery. This utilizes the bitter flavor's ability to induce vomiting and drainage. By draining the excess pathogen, the polyps resolve.
