Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) 1 liang, Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) half sheng, Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou) one piece.
Xiao Xianxiong Tang (Small Bitter Chest Decoction) not only treats Xiao Jie Xiong Bing (Minor Phlegm-Heat Binding Syndrome in the Epigastrium), but can also generally treat seasonal epidemics complicated by food stagnation; its nature is neither heavy nor light, making it most applicable.
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) 8 liang, Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao), Lepidii Semen (Tinglizi) (stir-fried), Prunus Armeniaca Seed (Xingren) (skin and tip removed) each half sheng.
Grind together to obtain a pill size like a bullet; separately grind Kansui Radix (Gansui) powder 1 qian, take with two he of white honey, decoct and take.
Changing from decoction to pills, adding Tinglizi and Xingren to drain Lung Qi, this formula is specifically designed for upper jiao wheezing and fullness.
Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua) (stir-fried), Kansui Radix (Gansui), Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Daji) in equal parts, Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus (Dazao) ten pieces.
First decoct the jujubes, remove the dregs, add the aforementioned powders, or use the jujube flesh to form pills.
Shi Zao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction) is a harsh agent for expelling water; it should not be lightly tried unless there is a substantial excess syndrome. Later, Liu Hejian's Sanhua Shen Wan removed Dazao and added Dahuang and Heiniu (black morning glory seed); this alone is already harsh, leaving no room for the spleen and stomach. Adding Qingfen (calomel) would exhaust the primordial qi entirely; although the disease may be eliminated, the person would perish with it. It can be seen that Zhang Zhongjing named it "Ten Jujube" relying entirely on the sweet and緩 (moderating) nature of Dazao to protect the spleen and stomach, thus forming a disciplined army.
Crotonis Fructus Frost (Badoushuang), Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang).
Equal parts made into honeyed pills.
This is merely an emergency backup formula; it is preserved here as one method among others.
Natrium Chloratum Impurum (Na), Crotonis Fructus (Badou) (oil removed), Sparganii Rhizoma (Sanleng), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) 5 qian, Costi Root (Muxiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi), Piperis Longi Fructus (Hujiao) 2.5 qian, Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Lini Radix (Ganqi) (stir-fried) 1 liang, Arecae Semen (Binglang), Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) one piece.
Grind into powder. Use two sheng of strong vinegar, boil Badou for five to seven boils, then add Sanleng and Dahuang powders and decoct for another five to seven boils. Add Na, boil until it becomes a paste, mix with other medicines, pound into pills the size of mung beans. Take five pills per dose with ginger soup.
The formation of accumulations (Jiju) mostly results from Yang deficiency and Qi weakness. When Yang is deficient, it cannot transform turbidity, causing Yin qi to condense daily; when Qi is weak, it cannot harmonize Ying (nutritive) blood, causing blood vessels to become obstructed. Various accumulations arise from this. The method of treatment should prioritize unblocking Yang and regulating Qi. If one uses only harsh attacking and purging agents, I see only immediate failure.
