Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos) 1.5 qian, Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum) [prepared dried ginger], Bai Cao Shuang (Soot from burning straw) 1 qian, Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) 140 grains (peeled and tips removed), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) 70 grains (heart, skin, membrane, and oil removed).
Ba Dou and Xing Ren are ground separately, then mixed evenly with the powders of the other herbs. Six liang of good yellow beeswax is melted, filtered through double-layer fine silk to remove dregs. One sheng of good wine is boiled several times in a clay pot. After the wine cools and the wax floats, one qian of clear sesame oil is boiled in a yin (a type of vessel). Four liang of the wax is taken and melted together with the oil. The mixture is then combined while hot with the herbal powder in the yin, and formed into pills the size of beans. Take thirty pills each time, swallowed with ginger decoction on an empty stomach.
The method of formulating this prescription shows great ingenuity; however, its moving properties are too strong, and its astringent properties too excessive. Like a vanguard force charging into battle, it is ultimately less appropriate than a straightforward and orthodox approach. Those who praise it marvel that although it contains Ba Dou (Croton Seed), it does not cause diarrhea after ingestion. This is merely due to the sealing property of the beeswax. I dare not consider it miraculous.
Chuan Lian Zi (Meliosmae Fructus) 4 qian, Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 3 qian, Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) 2 qian, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) 1 qian (soaked in decoction).
Decoct with long-flowing water.
This is a general formula for treating Shan Qi (Hernia). It uses the bitter-cold nature of Chuan Lian Zi, assisted by the acrid-warm properties of Hui Xiang, Mu Xiang, and Wu Zhu Yu. It attends to both the Liver and Kidney, dispelling cold-dampness completely, making it very suitable.
Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) (stir-fried with salt), Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma) (stir-fried), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) 5 qian, Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) 2 pieces, Chuan Lian Zi (Meliosmae Fructus) 10 pieces, Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus) 71 grains.
First, slightly break Ba Dou, stir-fry it with Chuan Lian Zi and bran until black, remove the bran and Ba Dou, then grind together with the remaining herbs into powder. Take 1 qian with wine.
The general principle for treating Shan Qi (Hernia) should involve warming the Kidney and softening the Liver, while simultaneously addressing cold-dampness. Why resort to the harsh purgative action of Ba Dou? This falls far short of the efficacy of Dao Qi Tang (Guiding Qi Decoction).
Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) (stir-fried), Li Zhi He (Litchi Semen) ().
Grind into equal parts powder. Take 2 qian on an empty stomach with long-flowing water.
This formula is also mild and accessible. Although it lacks immediate effects, it is much more stable and reliable than Wu Yao San (Lindera Powder).
Ju He (Litsea Fructus), Chuan Lian Zi (Meliosmae Fructus), Hai Zao (Sargassum Herba), Hai Dai (Laminariae Thallus), Kun Bu (Eckloniae Thallus), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) 2 liang, Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 5 qian.
Form pills using wine paste. Swallow with salt water or wine.
This is a specialized formula for treating Shan Qi (Hernia). It encompasses methods of regulating Qi, breaking blood stasis, softening hardness, and promoting urination. It must not be used mistakenly by those experiencing severe pain.
