Cangzhu (Prepared) (Atractylodis Rhizoma Preparatum), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 2 liang, Gancao (Honey-fried) (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) 1 liang.
Decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). If Cangzhu is removed from this formula and replaced with Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 liang, without using Congbai, it is named Baizhu Tang (White Atractylodes Decoction).
Shenzhu San (Divine Artisan Powder) and Baizhu Tang are ingenious methods for treating cold damaging the spleen and stomach, and dampness overflowing within. If there is an external contraction of cold with no sweating, add Congbai; if wind is contracted with sweating, remove Congbai. The administration follows strict principles; it is indeed unnecessary to claim that it can replace the methods of Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Cangzhu (Soaked in rice water) (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice) each 1 qian, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 2 qian, Gancao (Honey-fried) (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) each 1 qian 5 fen.
Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) one handful, Chidou (Sojae Semen Preparatum) 1 sheng.
This combination is most appropriate for releasing the exterior and unblocking yang. Do not neglect it because its properties are light and bland.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fuling (Poria) 1 liang, Gancao (Honey-fried) (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) 5 qian.
Take 1 liang per dose, decoct with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and a small amount of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
This is merely a routine method of consolidating the root and treating the branch. It may be used for common colds in patients with deficiency constitution. However, if both the exterior and interior are excess conditions, it would be fortunate if the condition did not worsen; how could one expect relief? In Shanghan (Cold Damage Disease), Zhang Zhongjing had established precedents for using Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); it was not to assist primordial qi as the main force to drive out pathogens. Lan zhang (miasma) involves mostly damp-toxicity and cannot be compared to a common cold. As for epidemic pestilence qi, it attacks humans even more violently. Yang du (Yang toxicity) presents with symptoms such as fever, irritability, and macules/rashes; Yin du (Yin toxicity) presents with bluish-green complexion, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. If this formula is used to treat Yang du, it lacks the efficacy of clearing fire and resolving pathogens; if used to treat Yin du, it lacks the power to restore yang and provide emergency rescue. Neither application appears viable. I hold Mr. Yu Xijiang in the highest esteem; how dare I lightly critique his work? But while I accept the principle of using Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) in exterior-releasing formulas, I cannot agree that using Renshen makes the formula more effective than not using it, nor will I flatter my personal preferences.
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 8 qian, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) 4 qian, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Honey-fried) (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) 1 qian, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 1 qian 5 fen, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian.
Take 3 qian per dose, administer after meals mixed with tea.
The properties are light and ascending to release the exterior, treating all three yang meridians simultaneously. The addition of Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) also helps to disperse cold. Only in patients with deficiency constitution should this herb be removed, as Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) has a strong penetrating nature. One must fear that it might open the defensive gate too widely, thereby inviting pathogenic factors from the three yang meridians to invade the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) internally. This is a consideration that cannot be overlooked.
