Kongxian Dan (Draining Phlegm Pill) (from Chen Yan's *Sanyin Ji Yi Bing Zheng Fang Lun*): Treats the root of phlegm; all pathological changes caused by phlegm-fluid can be cured, including wandering numbness, pulling pain, and pain in the chest, back, waist, neck, or limbs. (When a person suddenly suffers from pulling and hook-like pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, waist, neck, and joints, wandering without fixed location, or nodules like scrofula in the muscles, this is a disease caused by phlegm-fluid rising and falling with qi, not a wind syndrome; Kongxian Dan is indicated.) Dazhang (Euphorbia Root) drains water-dampness from the zang-fu organs (skin removed, soaked in water to remove green color, dried); Gansui (Spurge Root) pushes out water-dampness from the meridians and collaterals (core removed); Baijiezi (Mustard Seed) eliminates phlegm-qi in the subcutaneous tissue and intermuscular spaces; the efficacy of Baijiezi is indeed miraculous. (Equal parts, taken with ginger soup. Li Shizhen stated in *Bencao Gangmu*: "This treats the root of phlegm. The root of phlegm is water and dampness. When encountering qi and fire, it coagulates to become phlegm, fluid, mucus, or accumulation. Dazhang drains water-dampness from the zang-fu organs, Gansui moves water-dampness through the meridians and collaterals, and Baijiezi dissipates phlegm-qi in the subcutaneous and intermuscular spaces. Only those who master its use can achieve miraculous results.")
Sanzi Yangqin Decoction (Three Seeds Decoction Nourishing the Elderly) (from Han Mao's *Yitong*): Zisuzi (Perilla Fruit), Baijiezi (White Mustard Seed), Laifuzi (Radish Seed). The elderly with abundant phlegm-qi can take this decoction. It temporarily eliminates excessive phlegm and qi, but should not be used for purging in cases of qi deficiency with wheezing and fullness. (Li Shicai said: "This formula is not suitable for those with qi deficiency.")
Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder) (from Qian Zhongyang's *Xiao'er Yaozheng Zhijue*): Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Gancao Gao (Licorice Root tip), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf) in equal parts. These four herbs attack mouth ulcers and painful dysuria due to Small Intestine Fire. (This method clears Heart Fire by draining it through the Small Intestine.)
Jiajian Sishi Wan (Modified Appetite-Enhancing Pill): Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root) 2.5 qian each; Maiya (Barley Sprout) stir-fried yellow 2 liang; Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) stir-fried yellow 2 liang; Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit) half a liang; Wumei (Mume Fruit) a few pieces. (Its efficacy is ingenious.)
Buhuo Wan Formula for Treating Cold Consumption: Liuhuang (Sulfur) powder 1 jin placed in a pig intestine and boiled. (Boil until soft, remove, mix with steamed dough paste to make pills, take 10 pills per dose.) Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Pill) treats various Yin syndromes: Liuhuang (Sulfur) and Chishizhi (Hematitum) mixed and calcined. (Liuhuang 10 liang ground to powder, placed in a porcelain basin with water, mixed with Chishizhi, sealed, reinforced with salt mud, calcined for seven days, then retrieved...)
Shuigu Zhang (Ascites with Abdominal Distension) responds remarkably well. (Preparation details see Wang Jinsan's *Gufang Xuanzhu*, suitable for deficiency-cold...)
Xiaoshi (Niter), Liuhuang (Sulfur), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum). (Xu Xueshi's *Puji Ben Shi Fang* treats Kidney...)
(Dan) treats Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder): Liuhuang (Sulfur), Wulingzhi (Trogopteri Dung), Xuanjingshi (Natron), Xiaoshi (Niter), Qingpi (Citrus Peel), Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel) made into pills with vinegar. (Consuming cold/raw food in summer causes internal latent summer-heat, leading to Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea; this drug unblocks the Triple Burner and regulates Yin and Yang. The formula originates from *Heji Jufang*, effectively treating deficiency-cold constipation.)
Lingsha (Spirit Sand) (1 jin Mercury, 4 liang Sulfur, fried in an iron wok until sand-like). It is essential for settling and descending phlegm-fluid. (Treats excess above... Drugs that settle and descend are most effective in regulating the ascending and descending of Qi and Blood.) Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill): Liuhuang (Sulfur) forms sand particles. (Black Tin and Sulfur fried together to form sand.) (The settling power of Black Tin surpasses that of Lingsha.) Xiao Heixi Dan (Minor Black Tin Pill) adds Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), Hulusba (Proso Millet Seed) and Buguzhi (Psoralea Fruit)...
Jinlingzi (Melia Toosendan Fruit), Roudoukou (Nutmeg), Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood), Huixiang (Fennel Fruit), Muxiang (Costus Root). Its efficacy doubles that of the original formula, truly not exaggerated. (Its power in descending rebellious Qi and subduing latent pathogens is greater than Xiao Heixi Dan; this formula must be used...)
(Shi), Liuhuang (Sulfur), Shuiyin (Mercury), and Heixi (Black Tin) are all formed by inheriting the guiding Qi of Yin and Yang, leaving no room for doubt.) I briefly list eight or nine established formulas; remember them firmly in your heart.
Yupingfeng San (Jade Windscreen Powder): Huangqi (Astragalus Root) roasted, Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) 1 liang each. Excellent for Wei-deficiency spontaneous sweating. (Treats Qi deficiency and weak exterior with incessant spontaneous sweating; long-standing wind pathogen...) With Fangfeng, its efficacy is greatly enhanced, able to guide True Qi throughout the body. (Li Dongyuan said: "Huangqi works synergistically with Fangfeng." Wang Jinsan in *Gufang Xuanzhu* said: "Huangqi has a dull nature, Fangfeng has a penetrating nature. The dull accepts the penetrating... Following Fangfeng to guard the body surface, thereby securing the exterior Qi.") For stroke (locked jaw), decoct this to fumigate under the bed; when Qi flows... Take as decoction; for chronic wind-induced undigested stool due to Spleen deficiency, it rectifies it. (Named Baizhu Fangfeng Tang, treats undigested stool.)
Chaihu Siwu Tang (Bupleurum Four Substances Decoction): Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Baishao (White Peony Root), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root) 1.5 qian each; Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) 1 qian. Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) ... qian each. One variation includes Banxia (Pinellia Tuber). Harmonizes Ying and Wei, reaches Shaoyang. For chronic consumption with alternating chills and fever, pulse deep and rapid (deep-rapid indicates heat in the interior, Yin is not yet depleted, so this decoction harmonizes Ying and Wei to dissipate heat; if the pulse is fine-rapid, full Yin-nourishing and Water-strengthening methods should be used). Most appropriate. (Adding Chaihu to tonifying formulas is generally unsuitable, except this one. Chaihu unblocks Shaoyang and harmonizes Ying and Wei, not specifically for dispersing wind.)
Danggui Liu Huang Tang (Angelica Six Yellow Decoction): Treats sweating (treats night sweats and fever due to Yin deficiency with fire). Huangqi (Astragalus Root) doubled; Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root) in equal parts. Clears fire, secures exterior, and nourishes Yin; adding Mahuanggen (Ephedra Root) enhances efficacy. (Li Shizhen in *Bencao Gangmu* said: "Mahuanggen... travels through the muscle layer and skin surface, thus guiding other drugs to the Wei level to secure the pores." Xu Lingtai in *Lantai Guifan* said: "For stopping sweat... Floating Wheat and Jujube are also used.") Some say this drug is too bitter and cold, contraindicated for weak Stomach and Qi deficiency. (Li Shicai said: "If Yin is deficient... and then using this bitter-cold and austere agent, is there not a warning against further weakening deficiency! It is suitable only for those with excess fire and strong Qi. Otherwise, bitter-cold...")
Maimendong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) (from Chen Yan's *Sanyin Ji Yi Bing Zheng Fang Lun*): Treats Loufeng (Leaking Wind), commonly known as head sweating resembling a steamer. (Regardless of season, spontaneous sweating on the head is called "Loufeng," commonly known as "Steamer Head." Due to wind-pathogen injuring the Upper Jiao, opening the pores, the Qi of the Upper Jiao is fierce and swift; encountering open pores, the meridian Qi loses its course, and pathogenic Qi attaches internally, hence this syndrome. The Qi of the Upper Jiao is governed by Lung Qi. This formula benefits the Jin-Ye and Qi in the Stomach to supply... This follows the principle of tonifying the mother when deficient, enabling the Qi of the Upper Jiao to follow the meridians, thus expelling pathogenic Qi and stopping sweating.) Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Lugeng (Reed Rhizome), Yuzhu (Polygonatum Rhizome), Zhuru (Bamboo Sap), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Mi (Rice) (aged Japonica Rice). Add the previous herbs to Yigong San (Five Ingredient Powder with Aurantium). (Renshen, Fuling, Baizhu, Gancao, Chenpi.) Sweet and cool benefits... Unblocks. Descends rebellion, harmonizes Middle, stops vomiting.)
Wendan Tang (Warm Gallbladder Decoction) is essentially Erchen Tang (Poria, Gancao, Banxia, Chenpi) plus Zhuru (Bamboo Sap), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Dazao (Jujube), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Shaoyang Gallbladder Heat transfers to... Stomach Heat steams... Phlegm is the etiology. Bitter vomiting, phlegm-fluid, insomnia: cleanse phlegm, drain heat, and calm the Spirit. (Erchen Tang harmonizes Stomach and cleanses phlegm; Zhuru clears Upper Jiao... Lower Jiao heat. Treating the Triple Burner but not the Gallbladder directly, because the Gallbladder is the source of vital Qi, and should not be injured directly by bitter-cold drugs. There is no warning against over-draining, nor is it warming the Gallbladder for cold.) After Shanghan (Cold Damage) illness, many such syndromes occur. (Empty vexation, nausea/vomiting, bitter taste, insomnia... many such syndromes.) Also followed for miscellaneous diseases with vexation, fright, and palpitations. (All due to phlegm-heat disturbing the Heart Spirit.) May add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) or Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Zaoren (Ziziphus Seed)... Vexation-heat... Can be added evenly. (Heart deficiency and spirit timidity: add Renshen and Zaoren, named Renshen Wendan Tang. Severe vexation-heat: add Huanglian, named Huanglian Wendan... The Sovereign emerges from Zhen; Gallbladder Qi clear and peaceful, Spirit naturally tamed. (Xu Gao notes: The Heart is the Sovereign emerging from Zhen; Zhen is located in the East, corresponding to Jia Wood in humans, generating Ding Fire of the Heart. Thus, those with timid Gallbladder Qi inevitably have deficient Heart Spirit, while those with strong Gallbladder Qi often have robust Heart Spirit. Therefore, although the Heart is the... organ, it actually obeys the Gallbladder, hence *Suwen: Zangfu Shengcheng Lun* states: "All eleven organs depend on the Gallbladder.")
Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) (*Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*): Use Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) wine-soaked, Baishao (White Peony Root) wine-fried, Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) earth-fried... 1 liang), Gancao (Roasted Licorice Root) 5 qian, plus Wei Jiang (Roasted Ginger) and Bohe (Mint). (Add roasted ginger and mint for decoction.) Disperses stagnation, removes steaming heat, efficacy is miraculous; Tiaojing Eight-Ingredient Dan (Danpi) and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit)... Manifestations. (This formula treats Liver blood deficiency with fire hyperactivity, headache, vertigo, red cheeks, bitter taste, fatigue, vexation/thirst, depression/ill-humor, alternating chills/fever, and... steaming tidal fever. Xue Lizhai added Danpi (Moutan Cortex) to clear blood-level stagnation heat, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) to clear qi-level stagnation fire, named Bawei Xiaoyao San, treating irregular menstruation in women... Pulse string-taut, large, and empty; the rationale is quite sound.) Although there are six types of stagnation, worry is frequent. (Six stagnations: Qi, Blood, Phlegm, Fire, Dampness, Food. Stagnation is a disease of emotions; although Danxi discussed six stagnations, stagnation caused by worry and anger is common.) Worry injures Spleen, Liver acts maliciously. (Worry causes Qi stagnation and injury to Spleen; Spleen injury allows Liver Wood to overcome and cause disease.) This formula soothes and unblocks Liver and Spleen. (This is a formula to soothe Liver and Spleen) Without injuring Righteous Qi, Xiaoyao prevails. ("Xiaoyao" is interchangeable with "Xiaoyao" in ancient texts. This formula dissipates Qi stagnation, agitates Blood stagnation, yet does not injure Righteous Qi, hence named "Xiaoyao".) Dan... Dry cough, (Zhu Danxi said: "Dry cough is extremely difficult to treat; this is a Fire stagnation syndrome, only using Xiaoyao San to vent it, followed by... can cure.") Yangkui uses it to treat Shanghan malaria. (Zhao Yangkui treated Shanghan... External contraction is often viewed from the perspective of stagnation syndromes; resolving Wood stagnation reduces all other stagnations. (Zhao... Xiao Chaihu Tang and Sini San both embody this idea, but overall not... Because Wood likes wind agitation, cold causes withering, warmth causes growth... Five Elements interact, a natural principle. I propose one formula... Stagnation resolved, followed by Yin-nourishing drugs. (Xiaoyao San, wind to... Often after using Xiaoyao San, follow with Liuwei Wan to collect...)
Pingwei San (Peace the Stomach Powder) (*Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*): Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) soaked in rice water 5 jin, Houpo (Magnolia Bark) stir-fried with ginger juice 50 liang, Chenpi (Citrus Peel) peeled... 5 liang), Gancao (Roasted Licorice Root) 30 liang, decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube). Drains dampness, disperses fullness, drives away mountain miasma. (Treats dampness invading internally, Spleen/Stomach unable to control, with accumulated fluid,痞隔, and fullness; also mountain miasma qi, intolerance to local climate, etc.) Expands upon various Stomach-regulating formulas. (For all syndromes of dampness invading Spleen/Stomach, one can expand from this formula... Or combine with Erchen (named Pingchen Tang, treats phlegm). Or Wuling (named Weiling Tang, treats diarrhea). Xiaoshi (Mirabilite), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Maiya (Barley Sprout), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven)... Qu) are all applicable. (Add Maiya and Shenqu to digest food; add Dahuang and Xiaoshi to purge accumulation.) If combined with Xiao Chaihu Tang, it is named Chai Ping Tang, decoct... Ginger and Jujube can treat malaria. Also, Buhuan Jin Zhengqi San is this formula plus Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) and Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb). (Same indications.) Duijin Yinzi benefits Sangbaidi (Mulberry Root Bark). (Pingwei San 1 liang plus Sangbaidi 1 liang, named Duijin Yinzi.) Good for consideration in yellow swelling and wheezing. If Cangzhu is replaced by Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), for frequent vomiting, Stomach... Doctors err not. Cangzhu can induce vomiting, so remove it; Hewei Yin comes from Jingyue. (Hewei Yin is a new formula from Jingyue. For vomiting syndromes, many have... Qi deficiency; upon smelling the aroma of Cangzhu, it may also induce vomiting, so replace with Ganjiang.)
Erchen Tang (Two Aged Herbs Decoction) (*Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*): Use Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) prepared with ginger juice 2 qian, Chenpi (Citrus Peel) peeled 5 liang each; add Fuling (Poria) 3... liang), Gancao (Licorice Root)... Decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Promotes Qi flow, harmonizes Middle, and drains dampness; all phlegm-fluid syndromes cherish this. (Li Shicai said: "Erchen is a wonderful agent for treating phlegm... suitable everywhere above/below, left/right, but only treats the branch of phlegm, not the root; the root of phlegm lies in Spleen and Kidney, users should consider carefully....") May add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) or Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven); heat-phlegm and food stagnation (phlegm) can be added equally. (Heat-phlegm: add Huangqin, Huanglian... named Erchen Jia Qinlian Tang; Food stagnation-phlegm: add Shanzha, Shenqu, named Erchen Jia Zhaqu Tang.) Dry-phlegm with thirst and desire to drink: replace Banxia with Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb). (... Erchen Qu Banxia Jia Beimu Tang Zhu Danxi said: "With phlegm and thirst, remove Banxia, substitute with Beimu." Wu Hegao said: "Thirst... desire to drink, substitute; inability to drink, even with thirst, Banxia is suitable.") Meridian phlegm-fluid: reach with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). (Phlegm in meridians and limbs: add Zhuli... Erchen Jia Zhuli Tang.) Qi stagnation generating phlegm: enter Sharen (Amomum Fruit) and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome). (Add Sharen and Xiangfu to promote Qi flow and relieve stagnation, named Erchen Jia Sharen Xiangfu Tang.) Wind-phlegm headache: follow with Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower) and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome). (Add Juhua and Chuanxiong, ascend to disperse wind, named Erchen Jia Juxiong Tang.) Qi deficiency... failing to hold, excessive salivary foam: tonify and purge must add Yizhiren (Bene Seed). (Named Erchen Jia Yizhiren Tang. Qi deficiency failing to hold saliva, excessive spitting of foam... add Yizhiren to hold it; for severe deficiency, add Renshen and Baizhu.) Daotan Tang (Resolute Phlegm Decoction) adds Dansing (Arisaema with Bile) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange). (Add Dansing to assist Banxia... add Zhishi to achieve the power of breaking down walls.) Can tame stubborn, congealed phlegm. (Stubborn phlegm is old phlegm.) Jinshui Liujun Jian (Six Gentlemen Decoction of Metal and Water) (Zhang Jingyue's formula): Guishen (Angelica Sinensis Root Body), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root). Follow for Yin deficiency with damp-phlegm cough. (Guishen and Shudi nourish Yin; Erchen dispels phlegm and drains dampness.) Remove Chenpi... Xiaoshu Wan, vinegar-processed Banxia is superb. (Banxia processed with vinegar can grasp Stomach Qi to disperse water. Combined with Fuling and Gancao, promotes dampness drainage and harmonizes Middle... Xiaoshu aims to eliminate dampness.)
Runxia Wan is Ershen San, salt-processed Chenpi and pure Gancao. (Chenpi boiled in salt water 8 liang, Gancao 2 liang, steamed dough pills. Named "Runxia" because Salt moistens downward. Ground to powder, it is named Ershen San. Treats phlegm-fluid between diaphragm.) San Shui He Pi Xiaoshu Wan is good. (Drains water to harmonize Spleen...) To dispel phlegm.)
