The *Mai Fa* (Pulse Methods) states: The pulse of Lung Abscess (Fei Yong, a condition characterized by pus and blood in the lungs) is rapid and excess at the Cun position; the pulse of Lung Withering (Fei Wei, a chronic wasting disease of the lung) is rapid, deficient, choppy, and thready at the Cun position. If the pulse is floating and large, prognosis is good (Sheng); if it is short and choppy, prognosis is poor (Si).

Wheezing (Chuan) may be caused by cold, fire, phlegm, yin deficiency, or qi deficiency.
Among the five zang organs, the Lung resides highest and governs Qi. It prefers clarity and abhors turbidity. The Classics state: "Clear Yang emerges from the upper orifices." Wheezing can occur due to interference from external pathogens of the four seasons, or due to internal stagnation of the seven emotions, leading to phlegm formation and subsequent wheezing. When wheezing occurs, breathing becomes rapid and cannot settle.
However, wheezing presents differently: Some are caused by phlegm, manifesting with audible phlegm rales when attacking; some are caused by fire, because the Lung belongs to Metal and dislikes fire, so fire pathogenic factors invade the Lung; some are caused by qi, where emotional qi interferes with Lung Qi, causing rebellious upward rushing.
Generally, wheezing belongs to the Lung. Therapeutic methods should include reducing fire, clearing the Metal (clearing Lung heat), resolving phlegm, and suppressing rebellious qi.
Some say that wheezing can be cured by promoting urination, while others have died due to improper purgative treatment. This depends on observing the deficiency or excess and distinguishing cold from heat. If sweating occurs with wet hair accompanied by wheezing, this indicates the exhaustion of Lung Qi; if sweating is like oil accompanied by wheezing, this indicates the exhaustion of Life Gate Fire; if there is fixed staring, delirious speech, and distension/fullness with wheezing, these are all incurable conditions. Additionally, wheezing can also result from wind pathogenic factors infiltrating the Lung over a long period without dispersing, or from damage by sour substances affecting the Lung. Alas, must one not be cautious?
