(From Han's Formula)
Treats elderly patients with excess Qi and abundant phlegm, presenting with panting, chest fullness, and poor appetite. (Note: Phlegm does not arise spontaneously but is stirred by fire. Excess Qi transforms into fire. When Qi surges upward, it causes panting, and phlegm moves with the fire.)
Perillae Fructus (Zisuzi) [preferably those that sink in water], White Mustard Seed (Baijiezhi), and Radish Seed (Laifuzi). Lightly stir-fry each, grind them, and decoct for oral administration. Use equal parts, or adjust the principal herb according to the specific condition.
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. White Mustard Seed eliminates phlegm; Perillae Fructus directs Qi downward; Radish Seed aids digestion. However, all are herbs that promote Qi circulation and resolve phlegm. When Qi flows smoothly, fire descends and phlegm dissipates. (Wu Hegao stated: To treat phlegm, one must first regulate Qi; this treats the branch/symptoms, but ultimately it is inferior to Erchen Tang [Two-Chen Decoction] which strengthens the Spleen and removes dampness, thereby addressing the root cause.) Li Shicai noted: In cases of Qi deficiency...
(From Yan's Formula)
Treats stroke where phlegm confounds the Heart orifice, resulting in a stiff tongue and inability to speak. (Note: The Heart opens into the tongue; its collateral vessels connect to the root of the tongue. The Spleen meridian connects to the base of the tongue and spreads under it. The Kidney meridian flanks the base of the tongue. When these three meridians are deficient, phlegm-saliva takes advantage of the deficiency to block the vessel pathways, causing the tongue to be immobile and speechless. If aphonia results from blood loss in these three meridians failing to nourish the tongue, blood-nourishing herbs should be added. When wind-phlegm blocks the collaterals causing a stiff tongue and inability to speak, the condition is severe; if heat accumulation attacks upward causing tongue swelling and immobility, the condition is...)
Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia) [prepared with ginger juice], Arisaematis Cum Bile Rhizoma (Danningxing) [1.5 qian], Tangerine Peel (Juhong), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Poria (Fuling) [0.8 qian], Ginseng (Renshen), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu) [0.3 qian], Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru) [...].
This formula acts on the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Deficiency of the Heart and Spleen allows wind pathogens to invade; phlegm and fire block the collaterals, causing tongue stiffness and difficulty in speech. Human...
Immature Bitter Orange breaks up phlegm and benefits the diaphragm; Bamboo Shavings clears dryness and opens depression, allowing phlegm to dissipate and fire to descend, thus unblocking the collaterals and softening the tongue. (Yu Jiayan stated: This condition is most urgent, yet this formula acts relatively slowly, creating a mismatch. Carefully determine if it is an excess pattern; if so, use this decoction to administer Niuhuang Wan [Calculus Bovis Pill]; if it is a deficiency pattern, use this decoction to administer Erdan Wan [Two-Red Pills], sufficient to open the phlegm obstruction...)
(Attached Formula: Erdan Wan: Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang), Asparagi Radix (Tiangong) [1.5 liang], Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Poria with Wood (Fushen), Licorice Root (Gancao) [1 liang], Cinnabar (Zhusha), Ginseng (Renshen), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi) [5 qian, formed into pills with honey]. Functions: Calms the Spirit, nourishes Blood, clears heat, and extinguishes wind. Promotes sleep. For cases where wind strikes the Heart and Spleen, phlegm obstructs the Heart orifice, or wind-cold stagnation causes tongue numbness and stiffness; also for Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, Kidney deficiency, and sudden aphonia in the elderly, Shiquan Dabu Tang [Ten Complete Tonifying Decoction] with added Changpu and Yuanzhi is appropriate.)
