(From *Yi Fa Ming Bei*)
Treats stroke syndrome characterized by inability to move the hands and feet, stiffness of the tongue preventing speech, with wind pathogenic factors scattered across various meridians without being confined to a single meridian. (The classics state: The palm receives blood and thus can grasp; the sole of the foot... Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, three liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed in wine), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried in wine), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, washed in wine), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried in soil) (five qian). Each dose is one liang.
This is a general formula for treating mild cases of stroke involving the six meridians. Qin Jiao (Rhizoma et Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) is used as the sovereign drug because it dispels wind from the entire body; Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) is used as the minister drug because it disperses fire in the chest... Kidney, simultaneously inducing sweating... Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix)... Qi to strengthen the central pivot. When the Spleen transports and dampness is eliminated, the hands and feet become robust (The Spleen governs the four limbs; dampness causes flaccidity of sinews). Furthermore, wind can generate heat; therefore, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) is used to clear the upper, Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to purge the middle, and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) to cool the lower, jointly pacifying the rebellious upward-moving fire. (Liu Zongnong stated: Although Qin Jiao Tang and Yu Feng Tang both contain blood-nourishing herbs, the majority are agents that circulate the meridians and disperse wind; how then can they nourish blood and benefit sinews and bones? Tian Ma Wan nourishes blood and strengthens sinews and bones, which is closer to reason. Yu Jiayan stated: This formula claims to nourish blood so that sinews naturally become supple, yet why use so many drying and dispersing wind herbs? It claims to nourish blood through stillness, yet why again use wind herbs to cause movement? These words contradict the prescription. I occasionally discussed San Hua Tang, Yu Feng Tang, and Da Qin Jiao Tang, all of which appear plausible but are actually incorrect. Ang notes: This formula has been widely used with much efficacy, and should not be equated with Yu Feng Tang or San Hua Tang. This was likely during a time when the nation faced external superficial pathogens, hence wind herbs were used to resolve the exterior, while blood and Qi herbs were used to regulate the interior; it is not exclusively focused on drying and dispersing. There are three methods for treating wind: resolving the exterior, purging the interior, and acting along the middle pathway. For cases with both exterior and interior symptoms, one first resolves the exterior and then purges the interior. If Yu...
