Teeth are the surplus of bone. Bone does not expose itself externally; teeth, being essentially bone, are exposed externally, hence termed "surplus." Similarly, lips are the surplus of flesh, nails are the surplus of sinews, and hair is the surplus of blood; these are internal stores, while only the "surplus" emerges and exposes itself. Qi is not referred to as surplus because exhaled air is visible. The Kidney governs bone, thus teeth belong to the Kidney, referring to their root. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian enters the upper gum, and the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian enters the lower gum, referring to their meridians. Therefore, diseases originating from the Zang-Fu organs often affect the tooth bones, while meridian diseases often affect the gums. However, there are differences such as deficiency-excess, wind-fire, and worm erosion; careful diagnosis and differentiation ensure efficacy. Seven selected prescriptions follow.
