Blood lines suddenly appear on the tongue without any apparent cause; this is caused by fire pathogens in the Heart, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. (These three meridians all connect to the tongue.) Stir-fry Sophorae Flos (Huaihua), grind it into powder, and apply it to the affected area.
(Alternatively, use Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Puhuang) stir-fried and ground into powder.) *Zhunsheng* states: Wen Ge San (Clam Shell Powder) treats heat obstruction causing blood to gush from the tongue like a spring. Mix Semen Plantaginis (Wuzi), Resina Styracis (Baijiaoxiang), and Concha Ostreae (Muli) in equal parts, grind into powder, and apply a small amount to the lesion each time. It also states: Liver qi stagnation causes blood to surge upward in the tongue; administer herbs that clear the Liver. (Note: The Liver meridian connects to the root of the tongue.)
Hemorrhage from the ear. The meridians of the Small Intestine, Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and Gallbladder all enter the ear. Furthermore, the ear belongs to the Kidney, and pathologies in various meridians can cause this condition. Blowing Dragon Bone (Longgu) powder into the ear stops the bleeding immediately. If the pulse at the left Guan position is wiry and surging, use Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder). If the Chi position pulse is restless or weak, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). (See Deficiency Damage chapter)
Blood oozing from hair follicles is called "blood sweat," also known as "Maiyi." The Heart governs blood vessels; this condition appears when there is extreme deficiency accompanied by fire. Maiyi Tang formula: Ren Shen (Ginseng), Huang Qi (Astragalus), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon), Shi Lian (Nelumbinis Nucifera Semen), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice), and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root). ("Yi" is suspected to be a typo for "Yi" meaning overflow.)
Simultaneous hemorrhage from the ears, eyes, mouth, and nose is fatal within moments before medicine can be decocted. First, spray water onto the face several times, quickly part the hair, soak several layers of coarse paper in vinegar until saturated, and apply it to the Fontanelle (Ximen) point; the bleeding will stop. Next, decoct one liang of Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), add five qian of powdered Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood) and Jiang Xiang (Daemonorops Spathe), and take with child's urine. Alternatively, use Qumai Yin (Knotweed Decoction): Qumai (Polygonum Aviculare), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Zhi Zi (Gardenia), Deng Xin Cao (Juncus Effusus), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice), and Da Zao (Jujube). Then, take two qian of Hair Ash (Fahui) with a decoction of Bai Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome) and Che Qian Cao (Plantago Leaf), which will guide the blood back to its vessels. Subsequently, administer pills made from Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) plus Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra) to ensure complete recovery. Hemorrhage from the nine orifices accompanied by fever and inability to lie down indicates death. Only in cases of postpartum women where stasis blood acts recklessly causing nine-orifice hemorrhage is there a possibility of survival using blood-dispelling drugs. Sudden syncope with no apparent cause followed by nine-orifice hemorrhage is fatal. For patients with chronic illness, sudden simultaneous upper and lower hemorrhage is also fatal.
Itching leading to unceasing blood loss can be treated by applying ash from a burned bucket hoop. Lu Yuanying treated a monk who had itching sores that bled like a gushing spring, continuing all day without stopping. His Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) suddenly declined, leaving only a thread-like Chi pulse. He administered Six Spirit Decoction (Sishen Tang) with Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta Head) and Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), given morning and night continuously. By the next day, the pulse gradually reappeared, and he recovered after taking Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction). (See Deficiency Damage chapter)
