Shi Cangyong was a renowned physician of recent times. A scholar once washed his hands under the eaves to catch rainwater, feeling something enter his fingernails. Initially, it felt like a hair or silk thread; after several days, it grew slightly thicker, resembling a line, and could extend and retract freely, unable to move as usual. He then realized it was a dragon hiding within. He sought Shi Cangyong to ask for a treatment prescription. Shi Cangyong said, "This is not recorded in medical texts; it must be removed by intuition." Upon returning home, he applied excrement from a dung beetle (Lumbricus terrestris) to the finger, hoping it would not penetrate deeply into the pleura, thereby avoiding the disaster of thunderbolt injury in the future. The scholar followed this advice. Later, during a thunderstorm, he saw firelight covering his body. Fearing greatly, he pricked his finger with a needle, and indeed, an object leaped out from the puncture wound, thus averting disaster. Li Dingyun recorded this in *Teng Shumi* (cited from *Han Yuan Cong Ji*).
The wife of Chen Zizhi, a Registrar, suffered from a strange illness. Whenever her abdomen distended, there was a sound inside like drumming, audible from afar. Passersby passing the gate suspected the family was hosting a musical celebration. When the abdominal distension subsided, the drumming sound also ceased. It occurred once a month. More than ten physicians treated her but could not identify the disease.
A scholar from Zhenyang had a fondness for alcohol, drinking several dou daily. By midnight, if his desire for wine arose, he could not restrain himself, leading to the ruin of his family fortune. One night, after becoming heavily intoxicated, he vomited an object resembling a tongue. Initially, it appeared to have no openings. However, when he desired to drink, eyes would rise vertically on its surface. His family poured wine for it, which it drank immediately until it reached the volume he usually consumed. They then subjected it to intense roasting over fierce fire, breaking it into more than ten pieces. From that day on, the scholar developed an aversion to alcohol.
*Qi Xie Ji* records: In Anlu County, Jiangxia Commandery, during the Long'an era, there was a man named Guo Tan with three brothers. The eldest son contracted Tianxing disease (an epidemic febrile disease) and subsequently developed an insatiable appetite, consuming one hu of rice in a single day. Their family provisions, sufficient for five years, were exhausted. Later, while begging at the front door of a household, having already eaten, he went to beg at the back door. The family member came out and said, "You have already eaten at the front door; how can you come to the back door again?" The beggar replied, "I truly did not know your house had two doors. My stomach was too hungry to endure. There are three plots of scallions (Allium macrostemon) behind the door, one plot being garlic. Because I ate them, the other two plots made me feel extremely stifled. I lay on the ground, and soon vomited violently, expelling an object resembling a cage. It gradually shrank as it emerged from the ground. The master brought out rice, stopped eating, and sprinkled the rice onto the vomited object, which instantly melted into water. This illness healed shortly thereafter." (Cited from *Dongpo Wulei Xianggan Zhi*).
A poor scholar purchased a booklet of medical prescriptions from a general market vendor. Among them was a formula capable of treating bell-like sounds within a woman's abdomen. It used soil from the front of a mouse hole, ground and sifted into powder. Each dose consisted of two qian, taken with musk-infused decoction. The illness was cured immediately.
