The father of Xu Daoheng, a resident of Dinghai in Mingzhou, passed away. He served his mother and traveled everywhere with her, showing utmost filial piety. During the Chunxi era, he arrived in Taizhou and stayed at an inn. Suffering from red eye (conjunctivitis) and having eaten crab, he developed internal cataract (opacity of the lens or posterior segment disease causing visual impairment). Unable to see clearly to continue his journey, he recited the *Prajna Sutra* from memory and begged in the streets, bringing all the money and grain he obtained back home to support his mother. This lasted for five years. One night, he dreamed of a monk with long eyebrows and a large nose, holding a bowl containing water, instructing Xu to scoop it up and wash his eyes. The monk also said, "From now on, you should take Sheep Liver Pill for one hundred days." Knowing this was a manifestation of a Buddhist Arhat, Xu joyfully bowed and requested a prescription. The monk said: "Take one liang of washed Ye Mingsha (Cacumen Tenebrionis), one liang of Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), one liang of Chan Qiao (Periostracum Cicadae), and one liang of Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba) with nodes removed. Grind them together into powder. Buy four liang of sheep liver, boil until soft, mash into a paste, mix with the aforementioned powder, and form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take fifty pills after meals with warm boiled water. After one hundred days, your vision will return to normal." Later, he returned home with his mother. After his mother's death, he abandoned his family life and became a Daoist practitioner. (From *Lei Shuo*)
A man in Fuzhou suffered from an eye disease characterized by redness, dampness, tearing, intermittent pain, and itching between the eyelids. He could not see during the day and dared not approach light sources at night, sitting dazedly. His friend, Zhao Qian (courtesy name Zichun), told him, "This is rotten margin wind (blepharitis). I have a medicine that treats this precisely, called 'Two-Hundred-Ingredient Flower and Herb Paste.'" The patient exclaimed in surprise, "Such a vast number of ingredients are not found in any existing medical texts. Could it be easily prepared? You must be joking." Zhao replied, "I happened to see a medicine just now and intend to give it to you." The next day, Zhao brought a small amount (one qian bi) of the medicine, which was firm and paste-like. He instructed the patient to take a small spoonful and put it in his mouth. By the first day, tearing stopped; by the second day, swelling subsided; by the third day, pain ceased, and he recovered completely. He then visited Zhao to express gratitude and asked for the name and composition of the medicine. Zhao laughed and said, "Simply use a gall bladder from a castrated ram, remove the fat inside, fill it with good honey, mix evenly, steam until dry, place in a jar, and grind finely into a paste. Since bees gather from hundreds of flowers and sheep graze on hundreds of herbs, I concealed the specific names to mystify people." (From *Gui Zhi*)
When pediatric exanthematous diseases (such as smallpox or measles) affect the eyes, it is due to excessive heat and toxicity attacking upward, often caused by consuming toxic substances. When the rash is in full bloom, if the eyes feel swollen and painful, frequently opening to check, as long as no sores appear on the cornea/conjunctiva, there is no major harm. If sores do appear on the eye, one must administer Qing Liang Yin Zi (Cooling Drink Decoction), taken once daily after meals, to induce mild diarrhea. After the scabs dry, if nursing care is improper or diet is careless, or if the eyes suddenly become painful without cause, it indicates that the pathogenic toxins are not fully cleared. For mild cases, use Qing Liang Yin Zi; for severe cases, use Xiong Huang Jie Du Wan (Realgar Detoxification Pill). One must undergo vigorous purgation three or four times before administering eye-specific treatments. As long as the eyeball does not perforate, recovery is inevitable. (From *Bao Sheng Fang*)
