Formula No. 37
A formula for eliminating myriad diseases and prolonging life with long-term use.
Select Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) growing on the sunny south slope of mountains, which has a sweet and pleasant taste; avoid Poria from the shady north slope, which tastes bitter and unpleasant. After selection, do not peel it. Slice thinly with a knife, dry in the sun,
steam until vapor penetrates thoroughly, then percolate with hot water. The color turns red and the taste becomes bitter. Continue percolation until the liquid tastes sweet, then stop. Dry again, pound into powder, and sieve to obtain three dou of Poria powder. Take one shi of fine wine, one dou of honey, and mix with the Poria powder. Before they fully integrate, place them in a jar with a capacity of one and a half shi, stir vigorously one hundred times, seal tightly to prevent gas leakage, store for fifty days in winter or twenty-one days in summer, until butter (Su, 酥) floats on the surface of the wine. Skim off the floating butter, which tastes as sweet and delightful as heavenly dew. It can be formed into cakes the size of a palm.
Dry them in the shade in an empty room until the color resembles that of a red date. Eat one cake when hungry, and you will not feel hungry all day. This is a medicine used by immortals to survive famines. Seal the remaining wine and take this medicine with it, named Poria Butter (Fuling Su, 茯苓酥).
A formula for treating myriad diseases and dispelling various wind pathogens, deficiency, exhaustion, and cold conditions.
Select cultivated Apricot Kernels (Xingren, 杏仁), which have a sweet and fragrant taste. Specifically avoid wild mountain Apricot Kernels. Do not use wild kernels under any circumstances, as they are highly toxic and harmful to humans.
Cultivated Apricot Kernels (one shi, remove tips and skins, select only those with two kernels. Discard any with slight defects or breakage. Stir-fry over low heat, pound into fine powder,
take two shi of fine wine, grind the apricot kernels, and extract one and a five-tenths shi of juice.)
Take the above single ingredient, mix with one dou of honey and the apricot juice, boil until extremely thick and resembling milk, place in two large jars, stir, seal tightly with mud to prevent gas leakage,
following the same method as the Poria Butter above. After thirty days, observe that butter appears on the surface of the wine. Skim off the butter and store it in porcelain containers, sealing them. Store the remaining wine separately. Shape the medicine into balls the size of pears, place them on shelves in an empty room, resulting in a texture similar to maltose syrup, which is very delicious. Taking this allows one to abstain from grain food (Dangu, 断谷).
A formula for turning white hair black, regrowing fallen teeth, filling marrow and brain, rejuvenating, delaying aging, running as fast as galloping horses, and enabling fertility with long-term use.
Coarse and plump Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang, 地黄) (ten shi, cut into pieces, pound to extract three shi of juice) Sesame Seeds (Mazi, 麻子) (one shi, pound into powder, grind with Rehmannia juice to extract two and seven-tenths shi of juice) Apricot Kernels (Xingren, 杏仁) (one shi, remove skins and tips, select double-kernel ones, pound into powder, grind with sesame juice to extract two and five-tenths shi of juice) Yeast Powder (Qu Mo, 曲末) (three dou)
Soak the yeast powder in the juices of Rehmannia, etc., for seven days. When fermentation bubbles up, divide three shi of rice into three parts and add them sequentially. Use five dou of the medicinal juice to brew wine, following the home brewing method for fermented rice wine (Laozao, 醪糟). Add ingredients every three days, totaling three additions over nine days. After fermentation is complete, seal with honey for twenty-one days (three sevens). Butter floats on the wine surface, golden in color. Skim off using utensils to obtain nine da sheng of butter. Then filter out the dregs, keep the wine sealed. The person taking the medicine should eat the dregs, which makes the body plump and joyful, curing myriad diseases.
After consuming all the dregs, take the medicinal wine and butter. Take one sheng of wine mixed with one spoonful of butter, warmed with wine. Only consume white rice and Blister Beetles (Yanjing, 芫菁 - *Note: Contextually likely refers to a vegetable like shepherd's purse or similar edible plant in ancient context, but literal translation is Blister Beetle/Shepherd's Purse depending on interpretation. Given "eat", likely edible plant. However, Yanjing usually implies Cantharis. In dietary restrictions, often means avoid. But here it says "Only get to eat...". Ancient texts sometimes vary. Let's stick to literal "Yanjing" or clarify. Actually, "Yanjing" in diet lists often refers to the plant *Thlaspi arvense* (Shepherd's purse) or similar. I will use Shepherd's Purse (Yanjing, 芫菁) for clarity as an edible item in this specific culinary context, though caution is needed.*). Avoid raw, cold, sour, slippery foods, pork, chicken, fish, and garlic. Dry the dregs of Rehmannia in the sun. Mix with three sheng of wine, pound the dried dregs, dry again, form into cakes, and take orally.
