One Treatise, Eight Prescriptions
Prescription for Fragrant Ointment to Treat Nasal Obstruction:
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Xuncao (Herba Agastachis Rugosae) (in another prescription, Muxiang is used instead), Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis), Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari), Ruren (Semen Pruni Persicae) (each 3 fen), Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) (each 0.5 liang), Yangsui (Ovis Medulla) (4 liang).
The above eight ingredients are chopped and combined. They are decocted over a mild fire using the "three up, three down" method (heating, removing from heat, and reheating repeatedly three times) until the Baizhi turns yellow and the ointment is formed. The dregs are filtered out. Take an amount the size of a small bean, insert it into the nose, three times daily. For those with severe heat or redness and ulceration in the nose, replace Danggui and Xixin with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae).
Prescription for Fragrant Ointment to Treat Nasal Stagnation:
Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong) (each 0.5 liang), Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis) (1 fen), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari), Xuncao (Herba Agastachis Rugosae) (each 3 fen; *Qianjin* records this as Mangcao), Xinyiren (Flos Magnoliae Biondii) (5 fen).
The above seven ingredients are chopped and soaked in vinegar overnight. One sheng of pig fat (Zhu Fang) that has not been contaminated by water is added, and the mixture is decocted using the "three up, three down" method until the Baizhi turns yellow and the ointment is formed. The dregs are filtered out. Wrap the ointment in cotton wool, take an amount the size of a jujube pit, insert it into the nose, three times daily. (In another prescription, Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) 18 zhu is added.)
Prescription to Treat Biuyuan (Nasal Discharge):
Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis) (1 fen), Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari) (1 fen), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (1 fen, processed, peeled).
The above three ingredients are sifted into fine powder, mixed with honey, wrapped in cotton wool, and inserted into the nose. This is effective.
Prescription for Tongcao Powder to Treat Nasal Polyps:
Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis) (0.5 liang), Fanshi (Alumen) (1 liang, calcined), Zhenzhu (Margarita) (1 zhu).
The above three ingredients are sifted into fine powder, wrapped in cotton wool like a jujube pit. Take an amount of medicine the size of a small bean, insert the end wrapped in cotton into the nose, three times daily. (In another prescription, Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) and Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari) are each 1 liang.)
Prescription to Treat Biuyuan (Nasal Discharge), Nasal Polyps, and Difficulty Breathing:
Fanshi (Alumen, calcined), Lilu (Radix Veratri Nigrī) (each 0.5 liang), Gudi (Fructus Trichosanthis) (14 pieces), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (0.5 liang, processed).
The above four ingredients are each pounded and sifted into fine powder, then mixed together. Using a small bamboo tube, take an amount the size of a small bean and blow it into the nostrils. Plug the nose with cotton wadding. Do this twice daily, continuing until cured. (In another prescription, Tingli (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae) 0.5 liang is added.)
Prescription to Treat Nasal Polyps Blocking the Nose and Causing Dyspnea:
Take Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari), moisten it with saliva, bend the head, and insert it into the nose, placing more around the sides. Change it ten times daily, continuing for more than twenty days. Then, take Banglizi (Semen Arctii) 1 liang and Songluo (Usnea) 0.5 liang. Pound and sift these two ingredients. Wrap them in cotton wool thinly like a jujube pit, insert into the nose, change five to six times daily, continuing for more than twenty days. Next, take 2 liang of high-quality Wubai Fan (Alumen), place it in a clay cup, wrap and seal it tightly, and burn it in a cellar until the clay cup is hot. Remove, pound, and sift into fine powder. Mix with mianzhi (face fat/petrolatum-like substance) to form a pill the size of a jujube pit, insert into the nose. Change five to six times daily. Re-mix only when finished; do not mix all at once. Recovery occurs after twenty days. Strictly avoid labor, hot food, garlic, and wheat products for one hundred days.
Prescription to Treat Biuyuan (Nasal Discharge) with Polyps and Loss of Smell:
Gudi (Fructus Trichosanthis), Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari) (each 0.5 liang).
The above two ingredients are made into a powder. Wrap an amount the size of a bean in cotton wadding, plug the nose, and breathing will clear shortly.
