I have now selected and collected famous prescriptions to prevent diseases and alleviate suffering. However, scholars with extensive knowledge need not have everything detailed here; fearing forgetfulness during travel, I now briefly record the regulations for processing and compounding them, listed as follows.
All medicines possess five flavors: sour (Suan), bitter (Ku), sweet (Gan), pungent (Xin), and salty (Xian) [Note: Text says "acid/alkali" but context implies Five Flavors], and four qi properties: cold (Han), hot (Re), warm (Wen), and cool (Liang). Some are toxic (You Du), some non-toxic (Wu Du); some are dried in shade (Yin Gan), some sun-dried (Pu Gan). Harvesting must follow the seasons, distinguishing between new and old, authentic and fake. All processing and compounding must be meticulous.
All medicines have specific dosages and weights. The lightness or heaviness, quantity or scarcity, must not be arbitrarily increased or decreased. If used appropriately and matching the disease condition, ingestion will surely lead to recovery.
Some medicines are suitable for pills (Wan), some for powders (San), some for water decoction (Shui Zhu), some for wine maceration (Jiu Zi). Others are unsuitable for decoctions or wines, or must not contact fire heat. These must follow the original methods and cannot be altered.
After grinding and sifting medicines, iron filings may remain. Use high-quality lodestone (Ci Shi) to stir and attract them out.
For diseases located above the chest and diaphragm (Xiong Ge), take medicine after meals. For diseases below the heart and abdomen (Xin Fu), take medicine before meals. For diseases in the limbs and blood vessels (Zhi Mai), take on an empty stomach. For diseases in the bone marrow (Gu Sui), take when full, just before sleep. Follow these rules sequentially.
When medicines require administration with wine, it is to assist their potency. Administration with water directly attacks the disease. Dosage intervals vary from sparse to frequent, depending on whether the nature is cold or warm. All follow the specific prescription; do not administer arbitrarily.
Medicines requiring removal of roots/stems (Miao) or pits/kernels (He) vary in dryness or moisture. Before pounding and mixing, re-weigh to ensure exact proportions. Any deviation in weight will inevitably lead to treatment failure.
After sifting powdered medicines, sift again to ensure uniformity and fineness.
After forming pill masses, pound them thousands of times until the color is uniform, ensuring they are easy to shape into pills.
For honey-based preparations (Mi Ji), calculate the proportion of medicinal powder, then steam and refine the honey before mixing. This moistens the mixture. Its efficacy surpasses that of fire-roasted methods; using raw honey naturally follows the prescription.
For steaming medicines, use low heat to bring to a gentle boil. The amount of water and duration of boiling must follow the prescription.
In all compounding, if the prescription specifies processing methods, strictly adhere to them without alteration.
Medicines are classified into three grades (San Pin) with different inherent natures. Once the disease is eradicated, it is not necessary to consume the entire dose.
The timing of medication (early vs. late, first vs. last) depends on mutual assistance (Xiang Xu) and facilitation (Xiang Shi), or opposition and restraint (Xiang Fan / Xiang Zhi). Always follow the prescription; do not change easily.
