A child presented with a body heat sensation as if steaming, and irritability/fullness in the chest and diaphragm. The skin color was yellow like that of an orange peel soaked in water, and the sclera (white part of the eyes) was also yellow. The sinews and bones were weak and flaccid, unable to walk or stand. This was caused by the summer heat at the end of the season, combined with dampness steaming and boiling, causing pathogenic factors to knot in the meridians and penetrate into the bone marrow, disrupting the balance of Zang-Fu Qi. Consequently, Spleen Earth overacted on Heart Fire, and the combination of Damp-Heat formed this disease. Generally, when Heart Fire is excess, the body feels hot as if steaming and there is irritability/fullness in the chest and diaphragm; when Spleen Dampness is predominant, the skin appears yellow like soaked orange peel. Excess pathogenic Qi inevitably attacks the organ it controls and insults the one it does not control. The Kidney and Liver are affected by pathogens, resulting in weak sinews and bones and the inability to walk or stand. The *Nei Jing* states: "Patients with Spleen Heat have a yellow complexion and twitching muscles." It also states: "Damp-Heat leads to Wei Syndrome (flaccidity syndrome)." These words are indeed trustworthy. This refers to the principle that "the Child can make the Mother Excess; when Excess, drain the Child." If Spleen Earth Qi retreats from its abnormal position and Kidney Water recovers, Heart Fire will naturally calm down. Furthermore, the *Nei Jing* says: "In treating Wei Syndrome, focus exclusively on the Yangming Meridian." This precisely refers to this situation. I used Jiajian Xiehuang San (Modified Draining Yellow Powder) as the main treatment.
[Jiajian Xiehuang San] This medicine reduces Spleen Earth heat, restores Kidney Water, and descends Heart Fire.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Yinchenhao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (each 5 fen); Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) (4 fen in winter); Poria (Fuling), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) (each 3 fen); Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie) (2 fen).
The above herbs are cut into pieces, combined as one dose. Boil in one large cup of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and remove dregs. Take slightly warm. Reduce the dosage by half for the next dose. Administer again on the fifth day for full recovery.
Discussion: The *Nei Jing* states: "For diseases primarily involving the Earth element, use Bitter flavors to drain." It also states: "The Spleen dislikes Dampness; urgently consume Bitter flavors to dry it." Therefore, Coptidis Rhizoma and Yinchenhao are used for their Bitter-Cold nature to eliminate Damp-Heat as the Sovereign drug. The Kidney desires firmness; urgently consume Bitter flavors to firm it. Thus, Phellodendri Cortex is used for its Bitter-Pungent-Cold nature to strengthen sinews and bones as the Minister drug. Damp-Heat causes irritability; drain it with Bitter flavors. Thus, Scutellariae Radix and Gardeniae Fructus are used for their Bitter-Cold nature to stop irritability and relieve fullness as the Assistant drug. Dampness overflowing internally is drained with Light/Dan flavors. Thus, Poria and Alisma Rhizoma are used for their Sweet-Light nature to promote urination and guide Damp-Heat out as the Guide drug.
[Badu Chiw Wan] Treats Guizhu Disease (a chronic wasting disease or ghost-related pathology). An official named Xu Kedao, Vice Envoy of Letters, came to Xiongzhou and asked me to diagnose his pulse. His pulse was suddenly large and suddenly small, suddenly short and suddenly long. This indicated uneven Qi and Blood, with pathogenic factors damaging healthy Qi. The official stated that while traveling through Handan Post Station, he dreamed of a woman in green clothes whose face he could not see. She punched him under his ribs, causing a persistent pain that came and went, accompanied by alternating chills and fever and an inability to eat. This was identified as being struck by a ghost. I said: You may take Badu Chiw Wan. The official mentioned reading in the *Record of Famous Doctors* about Li Ziyu's Badu Chiw Wan, described as a weapon against ghosts. I therefore gave him three pills to take before sleep. The next morning, he passed two dou of clear water, and the effect was immediate.
I also treated the third son of Chen Qingyu. He had slept during the day in the Shuixian Temple, dreamed of receiving a piece of cake which he ate, and subsequently suffered from worry and rumination, epigastric and abdominal distension, and reduced appetite. For over a year, he gradually became emaciated and weak, with abdominal distension resembling Gu Distension. Multiple changes of medicine and prayers by shamans were ineffective, and he could not sleep peacefully. I diagnosed him and inquired about the onset. Thinking that this illness was neither external contraction of Wind-Cold nor internal injury from cold/raw food, I considered Li Ziyu's Badu Chiw Wan to be appropriate. I prepared five to seven pills for him. He passed more than one dou of clear yellow saliva, gradually regained balanced Qi, and was treated with other medicines, recovering fully in several months. Within two years, his body was strong as before. Thus, I recorded this case. This medicine is truly miraculous. When preparing, one should fast, bathe, and mix in a clean room with sincere devotion.
Realgar (Xionghuang), Alum (Fanshi), Cinnabar (Zhusha), Prepared Aconite Root (Pao Fuzi), Veratrum Rhizome (Lilu), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Croton Seed (Badou) (each 1 liang), Centipede (Wugong) (one piece).
Grind the above eight ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take five to seven pills each time, washed down with cold water, at any time.
[Chanhua San] Treats dog bites in summer and various injuries where maggots are abundant and the odor is foul and unbearable. A tenant farmer of Wu Quan in Jinzhou was harvesting wheat in May using a mule cart. A small lead mule was knocked down by another running mule and bitten in three or four places, causing unbearable pain. After five to seven days, pus flowed with a foul odor difficult to approach, and flies and maggots were extremely numerous; medicines failed to save him. Helpless, he lay outside the gate in a cart house. A begging Daoist priest saw him and said: "I have a prescription that is very effective. I will pass it to you." After preparation and administration, the maggots turned into water and discharged, and flies dared not approach. Cold Stone (Hanshuishi) powder was applied topically. He recovered well in ten days, and the crowd considered it miraculous. Thus, it is recorded.
Cicada Slough (Chantui), Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai) (each 0.5 liang); Sinensis Asarum Rootstock (Huayin Xixin) (2.5 qian); Snake Slough (Shetui) (1 liang, burned to retain character).
Grind into powder and mix evenly. Take 3 qian each time, mixed with wine. For injuries from donkeys, horses, or cattle forming sores, administer wine. For dog bites, mix with fermented dough and feed. Maggots turn to water, and flies dare not land again. Apply raw Cold Stone powder dryly on top.
[Dingfeng San] Treats bites from mad dogs. First, rinse the wound with Jiangshui (fermented grain liquid), then apply dry powder with cotton. It prevents recurrence and eliminates pus, with great efficacy. For any vicious dog bite, whether occurring one, two, three, four, five, or even seven to eight years later, if the bitten area becomes painful, starts with aversion to cold, or develops into wind symptoms with whole-body convulsions leading to death from starvation within days (80-90% mortality), I have personally witnessed deaths. This medicine cures all dog bites that break the skin. (Transmitted by Shen Xianqing)

[Wubai San] Treats scorpion stings with unbearable pain.
Cuttlebone (Wuyu Gu) (1 liang); Alum (Baifan) (2 qian).
Grind together into an extremely fine powder. Snuff into the nose in any amount. If the sting is on the right, snuff into the left nostril; if on the left, snuff into the right nostril.

Grind into powder, place in a box, and seal tightly. When needed, prick out a small amount with a needle and apply to the lesion.
[Fusheng San] Treats sudden death, crushing death, drowning, and all types of violent death, provided the heart area is still warm. Revive them.
Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) (any amount).
Grind into fine powder. For those with warmth in the heart area, blow a measure of "Yi Zi" (approx. 0.1-0.2 g) into the nose. Immediate revival. Excellent method.
[Yixiang Fang]
Imperata Rhizome (Maoxiang, sliced, honey-fried); Linglingxiang (Linglingxiang) (each 2 liang); Xiangbaizhi; Nardostachys Radix (Gansong, cleaned, each 1 liang); Sandalwood (Tanxiang) (5 qian); Trichosanthes Root (Sanlai, 7 qian, baked in flour paste).
Grind into coarse powder. Add a little Musk, mix evenly, and store in a silk bag.
