Zhao, a monk from Linji Temple in Zhengding Prefecture, suffered from wind-stroke (Zhong Feng) in the eighth month of the Gengchen year of the Zhiyuan era (1280 AD). His symptoms included hemiplegia (Ban Shen Bu Sui), mental confusion and lethargy, red face and cheeks, deafness, nasal congestion, and inability to speak. Palpation of the six pulses on both hands revealed a wiry (Xian) and rapid (Shu) quality. It was recalled that Zhang Yuansu (Jiegu) stated: Wind invading the Zang organs often leads to obstruction of the nine orifices; wind invading the Fu organs often affects the four limbs. The current inability to speak, deafness, nasal congestion, and mental confusion indicate invasion of the Zang organs; hemiplegia indicates invasion of the Fu organs. This condition involves both Zang and Fu organs being affected by pathogenic factors. Treatment began with San Hua Tang (Three Transformations Decoction), one qian, administered internally along with three liang of Xing San powder to unblock internal stagnation, allowing clear Qi to ascend and nourish the four limbs. Subsequently, Zhi Bao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) was given, augmented with Long Gu (Dragon Bone) and Nan Xing (Arisaema Rhizome), to calm the mind, stabilize the spirit, and nourish the divine, facilitating the ascent of Qi in each organ and unblocking the nine orifices. After five days, speech returned, and articulation improved slightly. Thereafter, prescriptions were adjusted according to the seasons and pulse/symptom patterns. Due to inconsistent medication administration, the patient could eventually walk with difficulty. Each day, the affected leg was bound with ropes to practice walking as if crossing thresholds or heights, requiring assistance to step over. Acupuncture was applied to the Jing-Well points of the twelve meridians to connect the collaterals. The next day, without rope assistance, the patient could walk. After several hundred days, the major symptoms subsided. The patient was advised to speak sparingly and regulate diet, recovering fully after one year.
[Qu Feng Wan] For individuals who prefer salty and sour flavors, consume excessive alcohol, and lack restraint in sexual activity, leading to the formation of phlegm-fluids accumulating in the chest and diaphragm. Fullness causes vomiting, nausea, and salivation. Ascending Qi causes dizziness and vertigo; descending Qi causes lower back and leg pain. Deep pathology results in left-sided paralysis and right-sided hemiplegia; superficial pathology results in sudden collapse. This formula broadens the middle jiao, dispels phlegm, searches out wind, regulates Qi, harmonizes blood, preserves youth, and promotes longevity.
