Breastfeeding (referring to the process of lactation and child-rearing after delivery) is a major undertaking. Medical texts are vast and numerous; unless one is well-versed in them, how can one know where to turn? In critical situations, application becomes quite difficult. Now, I have collected and excerpted various prescriptions, discussed essential care methods during pregnancy, and prepared effective and practical decoctions, naming this work *Obstetric Prepared Essentials* (*Chanke Beiyao*). It aims to be simple and easy to use to address emergencies.
For women who are pregnant, if they have been constitutionally weak and emaciated, deficient in blood and Qi, with wind-dampness in the body, and phlegm-fluid retention below the heart (epigastrium), when conceiving, pathological conditions may obstruct normal physiological states. The complexion remains normal, and the pulse is harmonious, yet the woman feels heaviness in the limbs, dizziness of the head and eyes, loss of appetite, aversion to food odors, a craving for salty and sour flavors, mental restlessness and depression, without knowing the source of the ailment. By the third or fourth month, severe vomiting and retching occur, leaving the body too weak to bear weight. If such symptoms appear, it is appropriate to take Zhuru Tang (Bamboo Shavings Decoction), Renshen San (Ginseng Powder), or Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) to treat "Zu Bing" (pregnancy malaise/nausea).
Zhuru Tang (Bamboo Shavings Decoction)
Treats early pregnancy symptoms including selective eating, vomiting and retching, headache, alternating chills and fever, disharmony of the four limbs, and mental restlessness.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, remove white pith, wash) Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix, remove rhizome, slice) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, chop, roast) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, remove heart. Each 1 liang) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, remove bark, soak in ginger juice, roast) Fuling (Poria, remove black skin. Each banliang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 fen, roast, chop) Danzhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, scrape down beforehand, add just before decocting)
Grind the above into coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, add 1.5 sheng of water, include a piece of fresh ginger and a piece of bamboo shavings (each the size of a chestnut), crush them, and decoct until 0.8 sheng remains. Strain and take warm.
Renshen San (Ginseng Powder)
Treats early pregnancy aversion to food, vomiting, and retching.
Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, remove rhizome, slice) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 3 fen, remove core, tear, stir-fry with bran until slightly yellow) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, peel, coat with ginger juice, roast) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roast. Each banliang)
Grind the above into coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, add 1.5 sheng of water, include a piece of ginger the size of a bullet, crush it, and decoct together until 0.7 sheng remains. Strain and take warm, at any time.
Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill)
Treats early pregnancy acid regurgitation, vomiting, abdominal pain preventing eating, or vomiting clear fluid.
Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix, remove rhizome, slice) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed, chop. Each 1 liang.)
Grind the above into fine powder. Mix with juice of Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 5 pills per dose with rice water, twice daily.
Furthermore, during pregnancy, the Qi of the zang-organs tends to stagnate, and joints become unyielding. One must avoid excessive sleeping and consuming sticky, hard-to-digest foods. There is no need to indiscriminately take decoctions, and acupuncture/moxibustion is strictly contraindicated. One should walk frequently, calm the mind and spirit, avoid sorrow, worry, fear, and shock, and refrain from carrying heavy loads or experiencing jolts. If one feels uterine discomfort, slight abdominal pain, mental restlessness, and limb fatigue, An Tai Shun Qi Ejiao San (Ejiao Powder for Calming the Fetus and Regulating Qi) is suitable. As the due date approaches, take Shun Tai Bao An San (Fetus-Guiding Security Powder) or Qianjin Wan (Thousand Gold Pill).
Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder)

Grind the above into coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until 0.8 sheng remains, strain, and take warm. If there is cold in the chest and rebellious Qi, add 5 sheng of fresh ginger and 5 dates, decoct together.
Bao'an San (Security Powder)
