Whenever childbirth is imminent, it is imperative to maintain silence and keep the laboring woman's door closed. Select an elderly midwife with a gentle disposition, and choose one or two steady, cautious family members to assist. Avoid any flustered behavior that might cause the mother anxiety and fear; also, prohibit idle outsiders and those involved in mourning or unclean activities from visiting. Failure to observe these precautions will inevitably lead to difficult labor and injury to the infant. If abdominal pain arises, allow the mother to walk while supported; if she cannot walk, let her stand for a moment, then try walking again. If the pain comes in waves and her eyes feel as if fire is burning (indicating fetal rotation), immediately administer one dose of Hupo San (Amber Powder) until she can no longer walk, then help her onto the bed covered with birthing grass, ensuring she conserves her strength. If she experiences internal heat and stifling sensation, take one spoonful of white honey mixed with fresh drawn water; if not relieved, eat one raw egg.
Hupo San (Amber Powder): Used near term to contract the fetus and facilitate delivery, and to treat various postpartum disorders.
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 liang, sliced, slightly roasted)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Donggui, 1.5 liang, remove rhizome and roots, slice, roast)
Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with 1 sheng of water and 0.5 sheng of wine until reduced to 0.8 sheng, strain, and take at any time.
Generally, labor has its own timing; if pain is not severe, it is called "Nong Tong" (playful pain). One should endure it forcibly and eat soft rice. If rice cannot be eaten, consume porridge and drink honey water, avoiding hunger and thirst which may cause weakness and exhaustion. If delivery is delayed for a long time, administer one pill of Tongling San (Spirit-Resolving Powder). After birth, give a small amount of vinegar ink to sip, and mix Qibao San (Seven-Treasure Powder) with child's urine to take one dose, which will naturally relieve mental distress. Continuously burn bricks or stones, pouring vinegar on them until seven days postpartum, so that the mother constantly smells the vinegar aroma. It is advisable to burn Mugwort Fragrance (Maoxiang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), and Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaojiao), etc., and strictly avoid exposing the mother to foul odors. After delivery, if sudden dizziness or visual disturbances resembling motion sickness occur, this is Xue Yun (Blood Fainting); urgently administer Mudan Yinzi (Peony Decoction) and Heishen San (Black-God Powder).
Cui Sheng Tongling San (Delivery-Promoting Spirit-Resolving Powder) (Another formula is in the lower volume, Obstetrics Miscellaneous Formulas section):
Ophidii Corium (Snake Skin, one complete piece, tightly rolled and wrapped in earthworm mud, burned to charcoal; use less mud near the medicine, no harm)
Grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mix with warm wine.
Qibao San (Seven-Treasure Powder): For early postpartum, harmonizes blood and qi, tonifies deficiency, and calms fright palpitations.
Cinnabar (Zhasha, ground to powder)
Cinnamon Twig (Guixin, bark removed, sliced without roasting)
Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, processed to remove dampness)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, remove rhizome and roots, wash, roast)
Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, sliced, slightly roasted)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, remove rhizome, slice)
Cornu Saigae Tataricae Ash (Lingyangjiao Hui)
Poria (Fuling, sliced)
Mix equal parts, pound and grind into powder. If the mother is stable, from three days before delivery until full month postpartum, take one zi measure daily, mixed with Qianghuo Doulin Jiu (Notopterygium Bean-Infused Wine), taken on an empty stomach. If chest and heart feel hot, reduce Ganjiang and Guixin; if cold, increase them. For abdominal pain, add Danggui; for chest stifling, add Lingyangjiao Hui; for chest emptiness/qi deficiency, add Guixin; for poor appetite or nausea, add Renshen; for tremors, add Fuling. Adjust according to judgment. Take twice daily and once at night. For those who do not drink alcohol, mix with child's urine and warm before taking.
Mudan Yinzi (Peony Decoction): Treats postpartum blood fainting, agitation, and confusion. If the mouth is clenched, pry it open and pour the medicine in; it is highly effective.
Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, wash, slice)
Rhubarb Root et Rhizome (Dahuang, raw use, slice)
Mirabilite (Mangxiao, separately ground, added later. Each 1 liang)
Benincasa Semen (Dongguazi, 0.5 he)
Peach Seed (Taoren, 3-7 pieces, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed)
Grind into coarse powder. Take 5 da qian per dose, decoct with 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng, strain, add Mangxiao, and take. Prepare this decoction in advance before delivery for emergencies.
Single Formula: Heishen San (Black-God Powder): Prevents fainting and prepares for emergencies.
Donkey Hide Glue (Lvhuojiao, quantity unspecified), burn with mulberry wood, scrape off the black carbon residue, burn and scrape again until finished, grind into powder, add a small amount of real Moschus (Shexiang). Immediately after birth, or when feeling blood rushing to the heart causing faintness, take 1 qian of powder, mix with hot wine and child's urine, and take.
If the mother feels empty-hearted postpartum, occasionally administer Hupo San or decoct Shaoyao Tang (Peppermint/Peony Decoction - *Note: Context implies Peony Decoction based on ingredients*). Do not use other treatments. Regularly consume warm porridge; avoid hot food. Hot food causes blood stasis. If within three to five days, sharp abdominal pain is felt and the "child pillow" (uterine afterbirth mass) is unsettled, administer Dingtong San (Pain-Stopping Powder); refer to Hupo San as per item 3.
Shaoyao Tang (Peony Decoction): Treats postpartum deficiency, loss of appetite, limb fatigue, and paroxysmal abdominal pain. Tonifies deficiency and regulates qi.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 1.5 liang, remove rhizome and roots, wash, slice, dry-roast)
White Peony Root (Shaoyao, wash, slice)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, remove rhizome, slice)
Cinnamon Bark (Rougui, bark removed, sliced without roasting)
Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, added later)
Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted. Each 1 liang)
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shengshengdi, 2 liang, wash, soak in wine, roast)
Slice and pound into coarse powder. Take 3 da qian per dose. Add 2 jujubes to 2 sheng of water, decoct until reduced to 1 sheng, strain, cool to warm temperature, and take. Take three times daily.
Dingtong San (Pain-Stopping Powder): Treats persistent postpartum lochia, unbearable internal heat pain, and unsettled "child pillow."
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, wash, remove rhizome and roots, slice, roast)
White Peony Root (Shaoyao, wash. Each 2 liang)
Cinnamon Twig (Guixin, 1 liang; if body feels steaming hot, substitute with Chuanxiong Rhizome)
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct with 1 sheng of water and wine together with a thumb-sized piece of broken Fresh Ginger until reduced to 0.6 sheng, strain, and take warm.
If limbs are comfortable postpartum, do not consume excessive medicinal wine, as qi deficiency may lead to dizziness; drinking child's urine is harmless. Do not lie flat; sleep on the side. Someone must watch over her at night, advising her to sleep with knees bent, and wake her frequently. If feeling weak and exhausted, take Lizhong Wan (Regulate-the-Middle Pill) and Qibao San on an empty stomach. After seven days, if porridge tastes bland or there is weakness, cook mutton juice or hen juice into porridge. Do not eat meat yet, nor hard foods, to avoid stagnation. Commonly, stir-fry 1 sheng of clean black beans until smoke appears, pour 5 sheng of wine over them, add 1 liang of Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), crush, and soak. Use this wine to administer medicines or drink one cup occasionally to ward off wind-cold and prevent diseases.
Sishun Lizhong Wan (Four-Harmony Regulate-the-Middle Pill): Treats postpartum organ deficiency and loss of appetite. Tonifies the five zang organs.
Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, 3 liang, roasted, sliced)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, remove rhizome, slice)
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, sliced, roasted)
Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, processed to remove dampness. Each 2 liang)
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of paulownia seeds. Take 15 to 29 pills per dose with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Qibao San (Seven-Treasure Powder): Refer to previous entry.
If after three days high fever and headache occur, this indicates the milk channels are flowing; administer Yulu San (Jade-Dew Powder) for two doses. If constipation occurs, or chills and fever, headache, and fragmented limb pain arise, this is Chulao (Childbed Labor). If excessive thirst occurs postpartum, or if there is cough due to damaged fetus, or other new ailments and recurrence of old diseases, consult other formulas for treatment. Within the first month, avoid excessive talking and laughing, forced rising from bed, walking, or needlework. Indulging in raw/hard foods, exposure to wind, undressing, or bathing may not show immediate damage but can lead to Chulao after the full month, characterized by soreness, heaviness, cold pain in hands, feet, waist, and legs, and a whistling sensation in the marrow like wind blowing. Even famous doctors may fail to cure this. Generally, postpartum recuperation requires one hundred days for full recovery. Strictly avoid violations; many cases result in rigid body stiffness, such as opisthotonos, named Rufeng (Childbed Wind), leading to death. Minor weakness neglected in tonification becomes a major affliction, regretted for life. Beware, beware.
Yulu San (Jade-Dew Powder): Treats postpartum milk channel flow, irritability, heat, large intestine stagnation, and limb pain. Cools the diaphragm, reduces heat, and promotes lactation.
Poria (Fuling, sliced)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, remove rhizome, slice)
Prepared Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted. Each 0.5 liang)
Platycodon Root (Jiegeng, remove rhizome, slice, roast)

White Peony Root (Shaoyao, 3 fen, wash, slice)
Grind into powder. Take 2 ping qian per dose, decoct with 1 sheng of water until reduced to 0.7 sheng, take warm, three times daily. If diarrhea occurs, omit Chuan Dahuang.
