Li Dongyuan's Shenxiao Huangqi Decoction (Miraculous Efficacy Astragalus Decoction) treats generalized numbness and loss of sensation, or numbness and loss of sensation in the head, face, hands, or legs and feet; it also treats eyes that are tight and constricted, photophobia and aversion to sunlight, or weak vision.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, two liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, eight qian), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen, three qian), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, one liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, half a liang).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take five qian per dose, decoct with water, and take hot before retiring.
Yiqi Congming Decoction (Qi-Boosting and Vision-Enhancing Decoction) treats internal cataracts and tinnitus, or long-standing dim vision and inability to see clearly, resulting from irregular diet and physical overexertion leading to Spleen-Stomach deficiency. This medicine can widen the field of vision, and long-term use prevents ailments such as internal and external cataracts, tinnitus, and deafness.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each half a liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (each three qian), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen, one and a half qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-fried, each one qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take three qian per dose, decoct with water, take hot before sleeping, and take again near Wugeng (around 3-5 AM). It is even better if mild edema occurs after taking the medicine. If there is irritability or heat signs, gradually increase the dosage of Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex); add it in spring and summer, and double the dosage in midsummer. However, too much of this single herb renders it ineffective.
Renshen Bugwei Decoction (Ginseng Stomach-Nourishing Decoction) treats internal cataracts and dim vision caused by injury from overexertion and irregular diet.
This is the preceding Huangqi Decoction minus Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), with Huangqi (Astragali Radix) halved, plus Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, one liang, soaked through with wine).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take three to four qian per dose, decoct with water, and take slightly hot after meals. Afterwards, the field of vision widens, and vision becomes clear as in childhood, with a sensation of feet stepping on the ground without knowing height differences. This is because Yang-raising medicines are taken frequently in winter. Stop taking the medicine when the condition improves.
Note: The above belong to the Hand-Taiyin, Foot-Taiyin, and Shaoyin meridians.
Li Dongyuan's Lianbai Yiyin Pill (Coptis and Phellodendron Yin-Nourishing Pill)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, tail part, processed), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (each half a liang), Shijueming (Concha Argo, calcined, three qian), Caojueming (Cassiae Tora Semen), Xi Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, fine grade), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-mixed and fried, each one liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of mung beans. Take fifty pills per dose, gradually increasing to one hundred pills, taken after meals with clear tea water. Usually, take more of the Buyang Tang (Yang-Supplementing Decoction) and less of this pill.
Ziyin Shenqi Wan (Kidney-Qi Nourishing Pill for Yin)
This method strengthens the master of Water to suppress excessive Yang fire.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, three liang), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, half a liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, four liang), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each two and a half liang), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, tail part), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Ganshashen (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dried) (each half a liang).
Place the above ingredients in a stone mortar, pound into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take fifty to seventy pills per dose, taken on an empty stomach with salted water.
Note: The above all belong to the Shaoyin meridian.
