The functions of Yin and Yang interact to form the body. There are seven Yang orifices, which are odd numbers, opened by the Zang organs, primarily responsible for receiving [external stimuli]. There are two Yin orifices, which are even numbers, transported by the Fu organs, primarily responsible for transformation [of essence and qi]. However, among the Yang orifices, the Heart and Lung belong to "Yang within Yin"; thus, the Qi of the mouth and nose ascends and descends, transforming formless Qi into tangible forms. The Kidney and Liver belong to "Yin within Yin"; thus, the orifices of the ears and eyes involve an interplay of deficiency and excess, transforming tangible forms into formless Spirit. Therefore, the five colors are received by the eyes, the five flavors are distinguished by the tongue, the five odors are inhaled by the nose, and the five tones are accepted by the ears. However, the light of the eyes radiates outward because Fire is contained within Wood; the acuity of the ears accepts inwardly because Water has the nature of moistening and flowing downward. It is commonly observed that those with sufficient Kidney Qi have earwax filling their ears, yet their hearing becomes more acute; whereas those with deficient Kidney Qi have unobstructed ear canals, yet their hearing becomes impaired. Understanding this principle reveals that the Qi of the Shaoyin [Lesser Yin] channel resides within the ears, while the external obstruction is caused by the disturbance and mutual agitation of Wind and Fire from the Shaoyang [Lesser Yang] channel; expelling the external pathogens achieves cure. If Kidney Qi is not充盈 (abundant) and the Qi of the Shaoyin meridian does not reach, one must vigorously tonify True Yin and administer substances with heavy, settling, and descending properties, so that Qi will not ascend chaotically, restoring its function of governing hearing, allowing it to receive like the echo of an empty valley, responding immediately to sound. Those who do not understand this foolishly employ external guiding methods to attempt to unblock Qi; however, with Yin inside and Yang outside, how can they transcend normal pathways? Others argue: The Heart opens into the tongue and its subsidiary orifice is the ear. Excessive mental labor disturbs Fire, causing tinnitus, but deafness does not occur. Ultimately, this is due to the failure of Heart-Kidney interaction, where Water fails to ascend, causing Fire to fail to descend. As for disorders caused by Phlegm-Fire, where the ears ring like cicadas, descending Qi causes Phlegm to move downward, and nourishing Water extinguishes Fire; this also adheres to the principle of gathering Qi and returning it to its origin.
