Sun Dongsu treated Zhang Jingchuan. The patient suffered from feizuo (a type of skin rash, red and itchy) all over his body, with redness, swelling, and unbearable itching. Others prescribed Jili (Tribulus Terrestris), Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Shengma (Cimicifuga), Gegen (Pueraria), Xuanshen (Scrophularia), Gancao (Licorice), Shihu (Dendrobium), and Jiuhuangqin (Wine-processed Scutellaria) for him, but the condition did not improve. It was then attributed to wind-heat, and he was given Xuanshen, Chantui (Cicada Slough), Qianghuo (Notopterygium), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Gancao, Shengdi (Rehmannia), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Shengma, Lianqiao (Forsythia), and Cangerzi (Xanthium). Consequently, his appetite suddenly decreased, and sores broke out all over his body, causing indescribable pain and itching. Sun examined his pulse and found both wrists to be slow and weak. He prescribed Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) without Banxia (Pinellia), adding Bidou (Lablab Bean), Sharen (Amomum), Yiren (Coix Seed), Shanyao (Dioscorea), Huoxiang (Patchouli), and Huangqi (Astragalus). After one dose, his appetite returned; after four doses, the pain and itching ceased; after ten doses, the sores and scabs fell off, and he recovered.
A scholar named Li from Fuliang suffered from an itchy condition on his back, where the skin rose隐ly like an inverted basin. There was no pain, only unbearable itching. His diet decreased daily, and no one could identify the disease. Qin Deli saw it and said, "This is a louse tumor (Shi Liu)." He claimed he could cure it. He applied medicine to the area and wrapped a cotton band around it. Overnight, the tumor ruptured, releasing about one dou (approx. 10 liters) of lice, which were still moving and wriggling. That day, his body felt light, but a hole remained open like the end of a chopstick, continuously oozing countless lice. He eventually died. Tang dynasty novels record that when Jia Weigong governed Huaitai, citizens suffered from this same disease. Jia said, "There is no medicine in the world to cure this; only burning ancient wooden combs into ash and using water from bathing yellow dragons can treat it." This coincides exactly with the previous case.
Xue Ji treated a man who had a tumor on his lower abdomen with dripping pus and fluid. He used Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Maidong (Ophiopogon) and Wuweizi (Schisandra) to nourish the Spleen Earth; Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) to generate Kidney Water; and further used Lushui Wan (Aloe Pill) to clear Liver Fire and astringe the wound.
Another woman had a swelling on her left neck the size of a chicken egg, which was neither painful nor discolored. She experienced fever upon exertion and alternating chills and fever upon anger. Her menstrual periods were irregular for three years. Xue Ji prescribed Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) alternately, assisted by Zaohai Sanjian Wan (Seaweed Hardness-Resolving Pill). After about a year, the swelling dissipated.
Another man, due to emotional depression, anger, and sexual exhaustion, developed a swelling on his left hypochondrium resembling a red peach. He took drugs for circulating qi and resolving phlegm, but the swelling increased, and all deficiency symptoms appeared. This was due to excessive deficiency of the Liver and Kidney. Using the aforementioned medicines and Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill), the swelling subsided.
The scholar Zhu Hongren, in his twenties, had five swellings near the middle finger on the back of his right hand. One large one was like a soybean, while the others resembled clustered millet grains. When pulled, they extended like silk threads, about three or four cun long. This was caused by blood dryness and tendon contraction. He was treated with Qinggan Yirong Tang (Clear Liver and Nourish Blood Decoction) for over fifty doses until cured.
Another woman had five or six swellings on the back of her left hand and ring finger, resembling ripe mulberries. Xue Ji said, "This is due to heat in the Liver channel blood." Indeed, her menstruation usually occurred ahead of schedule. The treatment should primarily focus on generating and cooling blood. She did not believe this and used moxibustion instead, resulting in hand swelling, fever, and finger contracture. Swellings also appeared between both armpits, the neck, chest, and breasts, with irregular menstruation. Xue Ji prescribed Jiawei Xiaoyao San plus Huanglian (Coptis) for over ten doses, after which the lesions gradually improved. Huanglian was then removed. After over a hundred doses, her menstruation became regular. Three doses of Dihuang Wan were then administered, leading to complete resolution.
Another scholar had a tumor near the Huantiao acupoint on his left leg, shaped like a large peach and soft to the touch. He strictly took medications for draining dampness, circulating qi, and resolving phlegm, developing aversion to cold, fever, poor appetite, fatigue, and general deficiency of form and qi. His pulse was surging and large but empty upon pressure. This was a Qi Tumor (Qi Liu), governed by the Lung. Since the Gallbladder belongs to Wood and the Lung to Metal, this lesion appeared in the Gallbladder region, representing Metal insulting Wood. With depleted Yuan Qi, internal suppuration had already occurred. He was given Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) for several doses, expelling much clear, white, thin pus. Suddenly, chills, fever, irritability, thirst, and headache worsened, resembling Taiyang disease (Shanghan). Xue Ji reasoned that this was because pus discharge further depleted Qi and Blood. He continued with the previous decoction, but the condition worsened, and the pulse became surging, rapid, and large yet empty upon pressure. He added one qian of Fuzi (Aconite). The condition worsened further, and the pulse returned to its previous state. This indicated severe deficiency where the medication failed to reach the site. Two more qian of Fuzi were added. After three doses, all symptoms receded. He then took Buzhong Yiqi Tang in the morning and Shiquan Dabu Tang in the evening, each for over thirty doses, expelling five pieces of necrotic bone. The wound was nearly healed. However, due to improper lifestyle care, the lesion ulcerated again, and all symptoms recurred, with a burning sensation in the throat and loss of mucosal lining in the mouth and tongue. He took Shiquan Dabu Tang plus one qian of Fuzi, and all symptoms resolved. After two days without medication, internal diseases returned, and the lesion ulcerated again. Two years later, the disease recurred. The previous medicines were ineffective. His Chi pulse (Kidney pulse) was minute and thread-like, indicating decline of Mingmen Fire (Gate of Life Fire). He was primarily treated with Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) assisted by Shiquan Dabu Tang, showing slight improvement. Two years later, he died from deficiency-cold syndromes.
