Liu Zhong'an treated a child suffering from *pi ji* (Pi accumulation, a type of abdominal mass or indigestion characterized by stagnation). There was hardness under the left hypochondrium resembling an inverted hand, abdominal distension with visible superficial veins, fever, emaciation, spontaneous sweating, and coughing, which were particularly severe in the late afternoon. The patient also suffered from *ya gan* (Gum disease/ulceration), foul breath, loose teeth, and bleeding gums. The limbs were fatigued, food intake was reduced, and the condition was critical. Initially, *Chenxiang Haijinsha Wan* (Agarwood and Goldsand Pill) was administered once, resulting in the passage of two to three stools of turbid matter. The following day, *Taqi Wan* (Sinking Qi Pill) was taken. After ten days, *Chenxiang Haijinsha Wan* was given again to promote purgation, followed by *Taqi Wan*. This alternating regimen continued for over a month, reducing the *pi* accumulation by half, and the child recovered completely after one hundred days.
A grandson of the Prince Fushun of the Ming imperial clan had a craving for lamp wick ash; merely smelling it caused incessant crying and demanding behavior. Li Shizhen diagnosed this as *pi ji* and prescribed pills made of herbs that kill parasites and treat *pi*. One dose resulted in a cure.
Yu Zhen commented: *Chenxiang Haijinsha Wan* consists of 1 liang of the first batch powder of *Qian Niu Zi* (Pharbitis Seed), 1 qian of *Hai Jin Sha* (Lygodium Spore), and 1 qian each of *Chen Xiang* (Aquilaria Wood) and *Qing Fen* (Calomel), prepared into pills using the paste of a single-clove garlic. *Muxiang Taqi Wan* consists of 5 qian each of *Chen Pi* (Citrus Peel, peeled) and fried *Luobo Zi* (Radish Seed), 3 qian each of *Caodoukou* (Black Cardamom), *Hu Jiao* (Pepper), *Mu Xiang* (Aucklandia Root), and *Qing Pi* (Green Citrus Peel), along with 2.5 qian of venom-free *Xie Wei* (Scorpion Tail), prepared into pills using water-pellet method. The dosage was thirty pills per administration, up to forty or fifty pills. These formulas are derived from the works of Li Dongyuan.
Lin Xiaolian narrated that his son, after recovering from smallpox/rubella (*dou zhen*), developed *gan ji* (Infantile malnutrition syndrome). The child was emaciated like firewood and suffered from loose stools. He accidentally obtained a folk prescription: mix 1 liang of *Shan Zha* (Hawthorn Fruit) and 1 liang of *Bai Jiu Qu* (White Wine Yeast) inside a clay chamber pot that has been used for many years, taking the maximum amount of *Ren Zhong Bai* (Human Urine Deposit). Calcine these ingredients over charcoal until they retain their nature, then grind into fine powder. Take 6 fen per dose with boiling water. The illness was cured before the medicine ran out.
The son of Shangshe Huang Yaotai suffered from *gan* syndrome, with an abdomen large as a winnowing basket and legs thin as tubes. An opacity covered his eyes, obscuring vision, making the case seem hopeless. In Suzhou, he received a prescription from an unknown master: take seven eggs, carefully remove the shells without damaging the inner membrane. Soak 1 liang of *Hu Huang Lian* (Coptis Rhizoma) and 1 liang of *Chuan Huang Lian* (Coptis Rhizoma) in urine from a healthy boy for five days in spring and autumn, three days in summer, and seven days in winter. Cook thoroughly after soaking, and feed to the child. The child recovered. This formula proved effective when used on several other children subsequently.
Jiang Yingsu observed Dr. Ding treating a child with *gan ji* presenting with abdominal distension, thin legs, and eye opacities. The treatment involved killing more than ten large toads and placing them in a narrow-mouthed jar. Collect the maggots produced, regardless of quantity, and raise them in fecal water. In midsummer, wait three days; in late spring or autumn, four to five days, until the toads are consumed. Cover the jar mouth with a square of coarse hemp cloth, invert it into running water, and allow the maggots to expel impurities until clean. Then, place the maggots on a red-hot new tile to dry by roasting, and feed them to the sick child. Each dose was 1-2 qian, followed by *Shenling Baizhu San* (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) to complete the cure. If the older child was suspicious, roasted barley flour mixed with a small amount of dried insect powder could be formed into cakes or pills according to the child's size and strength. All cases responded successfully.
