Zi Liangfu, from Jiankang, styled Linchuan, served as Taiyi Yu (Imperial Medical Instructor) during the Jiaxi era of the Song Dynasty. His family practiced medicine for generations; by his time, his medical skills had become even more exquisite. He harbored aspirations to transcend worldly concerns and save lives. He authored *Furen Liangfang* (Excellent Formulas for Women), which was circulated in the world.
Ming Dengfu, styled Renzhai, came from a family of physicians for generations. His father was particularly proficient. He always took saving people as his heart's intent and compiled *Zhizhi Fanglun* (Direct-Pointing Formula Discussions) in twenty-eight volumes, which was circulated in the world.
The son of Yonghe, [Huangfu] collected his father's medical works through a Confucian lens, possessing unique insights and subtleties. His medical skills surpassed the ordinary, treatments were invariably effective, and he saved many lives. He held the official title of Dianzhong Cheng (Attendant Gentleman of the Palace Hall) and Shangshi Yuyi (Imperial Physician Attending the Emperor).
[Huangfu] Zuan, from Hailing, studied and browsed classical prescriptions, excelling especially in acupuncture and stone therapy (moxibustion/surgical techniques). People near and far knew his name, and most of his treatments were effective. Initially, during the Jiaxi era, a woman in Jia was bewitched by a demon. Huangfu Zuan used acupuncture, causing the demon fox to flee from the woman's quilt, and her illness was thereby cured.
Zi Zigang, from Zhengzhou, held the official post of Tuanlian Shi (Military Commander). He deeply loved medical formulas, thereby attaining exquisite skill. His fame spread far and wide. Whenever anyone sought treatment, even commoners, he would apply himself diligently to their care. A woman suffered from severe diarrhea and throat obstruction (bi syndrome of the throat) after childbirth. Various physicians believed that these two conditions could not be treated simultaneously and deemed her death inevitable. He examined her and administered over ten pills, instructing her to swallow them. Her throat opened, and the diarrhea stopped. People marveled at this. He said, "This is Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) wrapped with Zixue (Purple Snow). Throat obstruction cannot be cured without cold-natured medicines, and diarrhea cannot stop without Lizhong Tang. Once Zixue is swallowed, the heat-toxin dissipates completely; what reaches the abdomen is Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). What is strange about this?"
[Huangfu] Tan, from Western Shu, was skilled in medical arts. Emperor Gaozong summoned him to treat the Empress Dowager's eye disease, achieving miraculous effects. When asked about self-cultivation, he replied, "If the Heart remains non-actionable (wuwei), the body is secure; if the ruler remains non-actionable, the world is governed." The emperor bestowed rich rewards upon him. Later, when summoned again to inquire about the art of longevity, he answered frankly, "First, prohibit all desires, do not allow indulgence; ten thousand scrolls of alchemical classics are not as good as guarding unity (shouyi)." The emperor appreciated and favored him, always addressing him as Mr. Huangfu rather than by his given name.
Zi Yanzhao, from Wucheng, Huzhou. During the Shaoxing era, he was a renowned physician who deeply investigated *Suwen* (Plain Questions) and *Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues). He excelled in acupuncture and performed many resuscitations. He passed the examination by the Ministry of Rites to become a medical officer, was repeatedly promoted to Hanlin Yizheng (Medical Director of the Hanlin Academy), and was granted the Golden and Purple robes.
