Qian Yi stated: Crying is associated with the Lung. Breastfeeding immediately after loud crying damages the Lung; when Lung Qi rebels, it causes vomiting and diarrhea. Since the Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interiorly related, diarrhea occurs.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: When a hungry person eats too much hastily, abdominal pain often results. The *Xiuzhen Mi* (Mysteries of Cultivation) states: Eating too much while hungry leads to the formation of accumulations and masses. It further states: Food should not be consumed hastily; hasty eating damages the Spleen. Bian Que stated: Long-term hasty eating eventually forms obstructive masses (Pi Kuai) with a sallow complexion.
The *Suwen* (Basic Questions) states: Excessive drinking causes the pulmonary lobes to disperse (dysfunction), thus Qi rebels and rushes upward. Consequently, phlegm diseases can arise. The *Xianjing* (Scripture of Immortals) states: Exposing oneself to wind after fullness often leads to sudden syncope without consciousness, resembling stroke symptoms.
Breastfeeding immediately after severe fright pathogenizes the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, often resulting in heart pain. The *Baopuzi* states: Fright followed by breastfeeding or drinking water causes Qi dynamics to become blocked, leading to vomiting or inverted stomach. The *Baiduan Jing* states: Drinking water after fright damages the Heart and tongue, often resulting in muteness.
Cang Gong (Chunyu Yi) stated: Infants drinking milk while exposed to wind allow wind-cold to enter the Lungs, causing coughing. The *Baojian* states: Wind-cold damaging the milk causes infants to vomit, with abdominal distension due to cold Qi. Another classic states: Physical cold exposure and drinking cold fluids damage the Lungs; damaged Lungs cause coughing. The Lung governs Qi; damaged Qi leads to abdominal distension.
The *Xiuzhen Jue* states: Breastfeeding under night dew allows cold milk to enter the throat without dispersing, often causing retching. The *Baojian* states: Breastfeeding at noon causes Qi to rebel and stagnate in the chest, both resulting in retching.
Wang Shi stated: Breastfeeding immediately after a regular meal causes infant halitosis and bleeding from the gums. Tongzhenzi stated: Simultaneous consumption of milk and food causes a sallow complexion and halitosis in infants, and can generate phlegm癖 (phlegm accumulation).
Ge Hong stated: Sweat is the fluid of the Heart. Breastfeeding during normal sweating damages the Heart; Heart damage leads to fluid dispersion; fluid dispersion causes dry skin and results in Heart Gan (childhood malnutrition syndrome) with high fever.
Sun Zhao stated: A mother consuming the Five Pungents (Five Spicy Vegetables) causes the infant to develop pigeon chest (Guixiong). Xu Shi stated: Consuming hot noodles and then breastfeeding will eventually lead to pigeon chest. Consuming sour, salty, roasted, or fried foods and then breastfeeding causes infant thirst.
The *Shenghui Fang* (Holy惠民 Formulas) states: If a lactating mother indulges in the Five Pungents, roasted/fried foods, and strong flavors, these accumulate and pass through the milk to the infant, generating heat in the infant's Zang-Fu organs. Heat causes irritability and unquenchable thirst. It also states: If an infant consumes sauce-preserved meat and drinks fluids when thirsty, it results in thirst-dysentery.
