Cunxiang (Visualization) is the method of using intention to control Qi (vital energy), a pathway extending from the interior to the exterior. Massage is the method of opening orifices and unblocking Qi, a pathway extending from the exterior to the interior. Therefore, medical practitioners employ it to assist in the dissemination and unblocking of Qi and Blood, while those who cultivate health value it for venting stagnation and obstruction. Those who practice Cunxiang should do so during the time after Zi hour (11:00 PM - 1:00 AM) and before Wu hour (11:00 AM - 1:00 PM). Sit upright facing East. Use the thumbs of both hands to wipe the eyes and pass through the ear gates, meeting the palms at the back of the neck. Repeat this twenty-seven times (3 x 9). Then visualize purple, cyan, and crimson-colored Qi within the eyes, floating out before the face like dense clouds and rosy mists. Perform the wiping motion again twenty-seven times as before. Re-visualize the cloud-like Qi shimmering before you, pouring into the pupils. Swallow saliva (the fluid of the Hua Chi) twenty times. Then open the eyes and make this a daily routine; it can be practiced while sitting or standing, without strict adherence to specific times. After about one year, hearing and vision will become sharp and clear. With long-term practice, one can see clearly for several li, and hear sounds extremely faint. The face should frequently be rubbed with both hands until warm, ensuring the constant flow of Qi. To begin, rub hands until hot, then use the palms to massage the face and eyes, following the contours high and low, ensuring thorough coverage. Repeat this three to five times. Then move the hands to the back of the neck and temples, combing the hair alternately, similar to brushing hair, also for dozens of repetitions. This gives the face luster, prevents wrinkles and spots, keeps hair black, and prevents the pulse from floating superficially. Persisting in this for five years without cessation, the complexion becomes like that of a young woman. This is described as the Qi of mountains and rivers flowing continuously, never drying up, just as wood and stone remain lush and moist.
The ears should be frequently pressed and suppressed on both sides to enhance auditory clarity. The nose should also be pressed repeatedly on both sides to calm the breath. Frequently use both hands to press the nose and the backs of the eyes, pressing up and down countless times while holding the breath. When Qi flows smoothly, there may be an urge to vomit upwards, then restart; repeat twenty-seven times. Consistent practice allows smelling odors from a hundred paces away and seeing with penetrating insight. The *Huang Ting Jing* states: "The peak in the center of heaven is cultivated with precision; once the spiritual residence is clear, the Jade Emperor wanders; pathways are unblocked and continuous without end." This refers to such practices.
Whenever a person feels slightly unwell, they must perform massage and pressing, engaging all joints to vent pathogenic Qi. Regardless of whether one is busy or idle, one must perform this daily. Starting from the head to the feet, wherever there are joints, press and rub each area dozens of times with the hands. This is called the "Great Opening of Passages" (Da Du Guan). First, press the Baihui point (GV20), then the surrounding head, then the outer edges of the eyebrows, then the eyes, then the tip of the nose, then the ear canals and behind the ears, pressing all these areas. Next, the Fengchi points (GB20), then the left and right sides of the neck, kneading them. Next, the shoulder blades, then the gaps between arm bones, then the wrists, then the ten fingers, pinching and rolling them. Next, the spine, either pressing or tapping/vibrating. Next, the waist and Kidney Hall (Kidney region), rubbing them. Next, the chest and breasts, then the abdomen, rubbing them countless times. Next, thump the thighs. Next, the knees, calves, ankles, toes, and soles of the feet, pinching and rolling them with both hands. If one consistently practices this, wind-pathogens are constantly expelled and do not linger in the Cou Li (interstices), which is called "Expelling Wind." Furthermore, before sleep, frequently rub the Kidney Hall and the soles of the feet with hands, until heat penetrates thoroughly from the surface to the interior. Rubbing the Kidney Hall until hot allows Kidney Qi to penetrate and facilitates the generation of Essence; rubbing the soles of the feet until hot opens the Yongquan point (KI1) and prevents blood from stagnating downward.
