石蜜 味甘，气平，微温。无毒。（生山谷岩崖间，色白如膏者良。）主心腹邪气，
诸惊痫 ，安五脏诸不足，益气补中，止痛解毒，除众病，和百药。养脾胃，止肠 ，除口疮。
久服强志轻身，不饥不老。
蜜蜡 味甘，气微温。无毒。（恶芫花。）主下痢脓血，补中，续绝伤金疮，益气不饥耐老。

三月采，蒸之炙用，否则令人泄。）主伤中疝瘕阴痿，益精。主女子血闭腰痛，通五淋，利小便
水道。疗男子虚损肾衰，梦寐失精遗溺白浊，小便自利不可缺也。
蚱蝉 味咸、甘，气寒。无毒。（生杨柳上，五月采。蒸干之，勿令蠹。）主小儿
惊痫夜啼，癫病寒热。妇人乳难，胞衣
不出。又堕胎。蝉蜕治目昏翳，头风目眩。又风寒客皮肤瘙痒不已，和薄荷为末，酒调一钱，日

味苦，气微寒。有毒。（恶麻黄。）主逐瘀血，破下血积，坚痞 瘕，寒热，通利血脉及九窍，喉痹。
斑蝥 味辛，气寒。有毒。（马刀为使，及畏巴豆、丹参、空青。七八月豆成时取
之，阴干。去翅足，糯米炒熟，米黄为度，否则吐泻人。）主寒热，鬼疰蛊毒，鼠 疮癣，瘰
恶疮疽，蚀死肌。破石癃，通水道。血积，伤人肌，堕胎。
蜻蛉 气微寒，无毒。（此有数种，宜用青色大眼者，去翅足，炒用。）强阴止精，暖水脏。

引痔虫出尽，瘥。丁疮，（取蜣螂心腹下梢白者，研贴半日许，再易，血尽根出愈如神。忌食油

螫蛇啮，涂其汁。蜂及蜈蚣毒者，生置痛处令吸其毒。小儿大腹丁奚，烧灰熟啖之。赘疣取网缠
之自落。发背疮，杵以醋和，先挑四畔，令血出张露，敷之，干即易。鼠 肿核痛，已有疮口出
脓水，烧二七枚，敷之即愈。

牡鼠 味甘，气微温。无毒。主疗 折续筋骨，捣敷之，三日一易，油煎令消入蜡，
敷汤火疮。医针人而折针在肉中及箭镞刀刃在诸隐处不出，杵鼠肝及脑敷之。粪两头尖，主小儿
痫疾，大腹时行劳复。
五灵脂 （寒号虫粪也。）味甘，气温。无毒。（用好酒研，飞炼令去沙石佳。）主
疗心腹冷气小儿五疳，辟疫。治肠风，通利气脉。女子血闭，产妇血晕，行经血亦能止血，妇人
心痛，血气刺痛，甚效。
蛴螬 味咸，气微温。有毒。（生河内平泽及人家积粪草中，反行者良。）主恶血
血瘀，痹气破折，血在胁下坚满痛，月闭，目中淫肤、青翳、白膜，取汁滴目中。又敷痈疽痔漏
恶疮，又治喉痹，取汁点喉中即开。
白僵蚕 味咸、辛，气平。无毒，一云有小毒。（恶螵蛸、桔梗、茯苓、萆 。白僵

又敷刀斧一切金疮。
原蚕蛾 味咸，气温。有小毒。（入药取雄者。原，再也，是第二番蚕，以其敏于生
育也。）主益精气，强阴道，交接不倦，亦止泄精、尿血。又治金疮、冻疮、烫火疮并灭疮痕。
屎（一名蚕砂。）气温，主肠鸣，热中消渴，风痹瘾疹，瘫痪不随。蚕蜕主血风病，益妇人。治
吐血，鼻洪，肠风下血，带下，赤白痢。敷丁肿入药烧用。牙宣、牙痈，揩齿龈上。口疮干敷患
处。小儿走马疳，入麝香少许，贴患处。医家多用蚕蜕纸，而东人用蚕欲眠起所脱皮。虽二用各
殊，然东人所用为正，用当微炒，和诸药可作丸散。
蝎 味甘、辛，有毒。（形紧小者良。捕得用火干死，投用之。去腹中土。有用全者，
有用梢者，梢力尤切。）主诸风瘾疹，及中风半身不遂，口眼 斜，语涩，手足抽掣，小儿惊风

积瘕，破坚下血闭，生子。
蜈蚣 味辛，气温。有毒。（赤头足者良。七八月采，端午日者尤佳。入药炙，去
头足用。）主鬼疰蛊毒，啖诸蛇、蛊、鱼毒，杀鬼物老精温疟，去三虫，心腹寒热积聚，堕胎，
去恶血。鸡好食之，故中其毒，以乌鸡屎水调涂咬处。又畏蛞蝓、蜒蚰，触之则死，故取以治其
毒，大蒜涂之亦效。
蛤蚧 味咸，气平。有小毒。（一雌一雄常相随，形如大守宫。凡采之须存其尾，
功力全在其尾也。入药去头足，洗出鳞鬣内不净，以酥炙用良。）主久肺劳嗽，传尸杀鬼物邪气。
疗咳嗽出血，下淋沥，通水道。入药二用，又云男服雌，女服雄。
鼠妇 味酸，气温。无毒。（多在下湿处瓮器底及土坑中，五月五日取。）主气癃
不得小便，妇人月闭血瘕，痫 寒热，利水道。
衣鱼 味咸，气温。无毒。（多在故纸中，即白蠹鱼也。）主妇人疝瘕，小便不通。
小儿中风项强，背起摩之。又淋闭，取以摩脐及小腹，溺即通。又敷疮灭瘢。
虾蟆 味辛、甘，气寒。有毒。（五月五日取，阴干。东行者良，入药炙或烧灰用。）
主邪气，破症坚血，痈肿阴疮，服之不患热病。治小儿疳，又杀疳虫、鼠 恶疮，虫食下部，
犬伤疮，狂犬伤发狂欲死。能合玉石，取肪涂玉刻之如蜡。丹溪云∶煮食发湿，不宜食之。小儿

剥取皮贴亦效。）温病发斑困者，（取一枚，生捣绞汁服之。）眉间白腊名蟾酥，治痈疽疔肿，
虫牙，齿缝中血出，以纸捻子蘸干末少许，血出处按之，立止。以朱砂、麝香为丸如麻子大，小
儿疳瘦者，空心一丸。如脑疳，以乳汁调滴鼻中立效。
绿桑螺 （似蜗牛黄小，雨后好缘桑叶故云。）主患脱肛，烧末和诸膏敷之立缩。
蛞蝓 味咸，气寒。无毒。（形类蜗牛，蛞蝓二角，蜗牛四角，兼背上有肉附壳而
行。）主贼风 僻，转筋及脱肛，惊痫挛缩。蜗牛主治同。生研水服止消渴。取一两烧灰，猪脂
和敷脱肛，立缩。又研和真蛤粉，敷发背。
蝼蛄 味咸，气寒。无毒，一云有毒。（夜出者良。夏至取晒干，入药炒用。）主
产难，出肉中刺。溃痈肿，下哽噎，解毒，除恶疮。十种水病，肿满喘促，小便不利，研末温酒
或汤调一钱匕。又云自腰以前甚涩，主止大小便；从腰以后甚利，主下大小便。若出拔刺，多用其脑敷之。
白项蚯蚓 味咸，气寒。有小毒。（三月取阴干，入药当去土子，盐水洗，微炙。）
主蛇瘕，去三虫，伏尸鬼疰蛊毒，杀长虫，仍自化作水，入葱叶管中即化。疗伤寒伏热狂谬，大
腹黄胆。又治肾脏风，下疰香港脚病须用之，仍以盐汤送。人被其毒，以盐水浸咬处，又以盐汤饮。
其屎封狂犬伤毒，出犬毛神效。温病大热狂言，（研汁饮之。）小便不通，（研汁和冷水服半碗。）
中蛊毒者，取十四枚，以苦酒三升浸之，蚓死但服其汁。）
田中螺 气大寒。（生水田，大如桃李者。）主目热赤痛，取黄连末内其中，良久汁
出，取以注目中。生浸取汁饮之，止消渴。碎其肉，敷热疮。烂壳烧末服之，主反胃。煮汁饮，
疗热醒酒。
牡蛎 味咸，气平、微寒。无毒。入足少阴经。（贝母为之使，得甘草、牛膝、远
志、蛇床良。恶麻黄、吴茱萸、辛夷。）主伤寒寒热、温疟洒洒，惊喜怒气，除拘缓。瘰 痈肿，
喉痹，鼠 。女子带下赤白，心胁气结痛。除老血，软积痞，咸能软坚也。涩大小肠，止大小便。
疗鬼交泄精，久服强骨节，杀邪鬼延年。和杜仲服，止盗汗。和麻黄根、蛇床子、干姜为粉，去
阴汗，引以柴胡能去胁下之硬，引以茶清能消结核，引以大黄能除股间肿。地黄为之使，能益精
收涩，止小便，本肾经药也。
石决明 味咸，气平、寒。无毒。（七孔九孔者良，以上者不佳。凡用先蘑去上粗皮，
用盐并东流水瓷器中煮一伏时，捣末。）主目障翳痛，青盲，久服益精轻身。
海蛤 味苦、咸，气平、寒。无毒。（蜀漆为之使。畏狗胆、甘遂、芫花。此是海
中烂壳久在泥沙风波淘洒，自然圆净。以小而久远者佳。）
主咳逆上气，喘息烦满，胸痛寒热，疗阴痿。
文蛤 味咸，气平。无毒。（生东海，表有文。此是未烂时壳，犹有文者。二蛤同
类，惟分新旧耳。）主恶疮，蚀五痔。咳道胸痹，腰痛胁急。鼠 大孔出血，崩中漏下。坠痰软
坚，止渴，燥湿收涩固济。治急疳蚀口鼻，数日尽欲死，烧灰，腊猪脂和涂之。又治疝痛，能降

珍珠 气寒，无毒。（用新完未经钻缀者佳。乳无声为度。）主镇心。绵裹塞耳，
主聋。敷面令人润泽好颜色。粉点目中。主肤翳瞳膜。小儿惊热药中亦用之。
贝子 味咸，气平。有毒。（烧用之良。）主目翳，鬼疰蛊毒。腹痛下血，五癃。
利水道，解肌散结热。
龟甲 味咸、甘，气平。无毒。（恶沙参，畏狗胆。卜师钻过者名败龟板，大者良，
入药用。生脱者勿令中湿，中湿即有毒。凡用酥炙，猪脂、酒皆可炙。）主漏下赤白，破 瘕

蜈蚣：味辛，气温。有毒。（赤头足者良。七八月采，端午日者尤佳。入药炙，去头足用。）主治鬼疰蛊毒，啖诸蛇、蛊、鱼毒，杀鬼物老精温疟，去三虫，心腹寒热积聚，堕胎，去恶血。鸡好食之，故中其毒，以乌鸡屎水调涂咬处。又畏蛞蝓、蜒蚰，触之则死，故取以治其毒，大蒜涂之亦效。
蛤蚧：味咸，气平。有小毒。（一雌一雄常相随，形如大守宫。凡采之须存其尾，功力全在其尾也。入药去头足，洗出鳞鬣内不净，以酥炙用良。）主治久肺劳嗽，传尸杀鬼物邪气。疗咳嗽出血，下淋沥，通水道。入药二用，又云男服雌，女服雄。
鼠妇：味酸，气温。无毒。（多在下湿处瓮器底及土坑中，五月五日取。）主治气癃不得小便，妇人月闭血瘕，痫寒热，利水道。
衣鱼：味咸，气温。无毒。（多在故纸中，即白蠹鱼也。）主治妇人疝瘕，小便不通。小儿中风项强，背起摩之。又淋闭，取以摩脐及小腹，溺即通。又敷疮灭瘢。
虾蟆：味辛、甘，气寒。有毒。（五月五日取，阴干。东行者良，入药炙或烧灰用。）主治邪气，破症坚血，痈肿阴疮，服之不患热病。治小儿疳，又杀疳虫、鼠瘘恶疮，虫食下部，犬伤疮，狂犬伤发狂欲死。能合玉石，取肪涂玉刻之如蜡。丹溪云∶煮食发湿，不宜食之。小儿洞泄下痢，（烧末，饭调方寸匕。）癣疮，（烧末，猪脂和敷之。）跌折损伤，（生捣烂敷之，剥取皮贴亦效。）温病发斑困者，（取一枚，生捣绞汁服之。）眉间白腊名蟾酥，治痈疽疔肿，虫牙，齿缝中血出，以纸捻子蘸干末少许，血出处按之，立止。以朱砂、麝香为丸如麻子大，小儿疳瘦者，空心一丸。如脑疳，以乳汁调滴鼻中立效。
绿桑螵蛸：（似蜗牛黄小，雨后好缘桑叶故云。）主治患脱肛，烧末和诸膏敷之立缩。
蛞蝓：味咸，气寒。无毒。（形类蜗牛，蛞蝓二角，蜗牛四角，兼背上有肉附壳而行。）主治贼风僻，转筋及脱肛，惊痫挛缩。蜗牛主治同。生研水服止消渴。取一两烧灰，猪脂和敷脱肛，立缩。又研和真蛤粉，敷发背。
蝼蛄：味咸，气寒。无毒，一说有毒。（夜出者良。夏至取晒干，入药炒用。）主治产难，出肉中刺。溃痈肿，下哽噎，解毒，除恶疮。十种水病，肿满喘促，小便不利，研末温酒或汤调一钱匕。又云自腰以前甚涩，主止大小便；从腰以后甚利，主下大小便。若出拔刺，多用其脑敷之。
白项蚯蚓：味咸，气寒。有小毒。（三月取阴干，入药当去土子，盐水洗，微炙。）主治蛇瘕，去三虫，伏尸鬼疰蛊毒，杀长虫，仍自化作水，入葱叶管中即化。疗伤寒伏热狂谬，大腹黄胆。又治肾脏风，下疰香港脚病须用之，仍以盐汤送。人被其毒，以盐水浸咬处，又以盐汤饮。其屎封狂犬伤毒，出犬毛神效。温病大热狂言，（研汁饮之。）小便不通，（研汁和冷水服半碗。）中蛊毒者，取十四枚，以苦酒三升浸之，蚓死但服其汁。）
田中螺：气大寒。（生水田，大如桃李者。）主治目热赤痛，取黄连末内其中，良久汁出，取以注目中。生浸取汁饮之，止消渴。碎其肉，敷热疮。烂壳烧末服之，主治反胃。煮汁饮，疗热醒酒。
牡蛎：味咸，气平、微寒。无毒。入足少阴经。（贝母为之使，得甘草、牛膝、远志、蛇床良。恶麻黄、吴茱萸、辛夷。）主治伤寒寒热、温疟洒洒，惊喜怒气，除拘缓。瘰疬痈肿，喉痹，鼠瘘。女子带下赤白，心胁气结痛。除老血，软积痞，咸能软坚也。涩大小肠，止大小便。疗鬼交泄精，久服强骨节，杀邪鬼延年。和杜仲服，止盗汗。和麻黄根、蛇床子、干姜为粉，去阴汗，引以柴胡能去胁下之硬，引以茶清能消结核，引以大黄能除股间肿。地黄为之使，能益精收涩，止小便，本肾经药也。
石决明：味咸，气平、寒。无毒。（七孔九孔者良，以上者不佳。凡用先蘑去上粗皮，用盐并东流水瓷器中煮一伏时，捣末。）主治目障翳痛，青盲，久服益精轻身。
海蛤：味苦、咸，气平、寒。无毒。（蜀漆为之使。畏狗胆、甘遂、芫花。此是海中烂壳久在泥沙风波淘洒，自然圆净。以小而久远者佳。）主治咳逆上气，喘息烦满，胸痛寒热，疗阳痿。
文蛤：味咸，气平。无毒。（生东海，表有文。此是未烂时壳，犹有文者。二蛤同类，惟分新旧耳。）主治恶疮，蚀五痔。咳道胸痹，腰痛胁急。鼠瘘大孔出血，崩中漏下。坠痰软坚，止渴，燥湿收涩固济。治急疳蚀口鼻，数日尽欲死，烧灰，腊猪脂和涂之。又治疝痛，能降能消，能软能燥，同香附末、姜汁调服。
珍珠：气寒，无毒。（用新完未经钻缀者佳。乳无声为度。）主治镇心。绵裹塞耳，主治聋。敷面令人润泽好颜色。粉点目中。主治肤翳瞳膜。小儿惊热药中亦用之。
贝子：味咸，气平。有毒。（烧用之良。）主治目翳，鬼疰蛊毒。腹痛下血，五癃。利水道，解肌散结热。
龟甲：味咸、甘，气平。无毒。（忌沙参，畏狗胆。卜师钻过者名败龟板，大者良，入药用。生脱者勿令中湿，中湿即有毒。凡用酥炙，猪脂、酒皆可炙。）主治漏下赤白，破瘕疟，五痔阴蚀，湿痒瘫缓，四肢重弱，小儿颅不合，头疮难燥，女子阴疮，心腹痛，腰背酸疼，骨中寒热，伤寒劳复，或肌体寒热欲死。大有补阴之功，力猛，兼去瘀血，续筋骨，治劳倦。久服轻身不饥，益气资智，亦使人能食。龟乃阴中至阴之物，禀北方之气而生，故能补阴血不足。又方家以其灵于物，故用以补心，甚验。
鳖甲：味咸，气平。无毒。（忌矾石。生取甲良。九肋者佳，酿醋浸炙黄色用。）主治心腹瘕聚，坚积寒热，去痞息肉，阴蚀痔恶肉。消疮肿，疗温疟，劳瘦骨蒸热。小儿胁下坚，妇人漏下五色，羸瘦，堕胎。头烧灰，主治小儿诸疾。又治脱肛，血亦可涂之。肉甘温，主治伤中，益气补不足，忌与苋菜同食。又三足者为能，不可食。丈夫阴头痈，（取甲一枚，烧末，鸡子白和敷，良。）产难。（取甲烧灰，服方寸匕，立出。）
蟹：（即螃蟹。）味咸，气寒。有毒。（八月后食之良，霜后更美。）主治胸中邪气，热结痛，僻面肿。败漆，烧之致鼠，解结散血，愈漆疮。黄能化漆为水，脚中髓并壳中黄熬为末，内金疮中能续断筋。爪堕胎，破宿血。产后血闭，酒及煮汤煎服良。
水蛭：味咸、苦，气平、微寒。有毒。（畏盐及锻石。用水中小者，五月六月采，晒干。腹中有子者去之，细锉后微火炒，令色黄乃熟。不宜入腹生子为害。）主治逐恶血瘀血月闭，蚀血痈积聚，无子，利水道。又堕胎，治折伤有功。
Shimi (Rock Sugar): Sweet in flavor, neutral in qi, slightly warm. Non-toxic. (Grows among rocks and cliffs in valleys; those white like paste are superior.) Mainly treats evil qi in the heart and abdomen, various types of Jingxian (sudden fainting with convulsions), calms the five Zang organs and various deficiencies, tonifies qi and supplements the middle jiao, stops pain and detoxifies, eliminates various diseases, and harmonizes hundred herbs. Nourishes spleen and stomach, stops diarrhea/dysentery, clears mouth ulcers. Long-term use strengthens willpower, lightens the body, prevents hunger, and delays aging.
Mila (Beeswax): Sweet in flavor, slightly warm in qi. Non-toxic. (Avoid using with Yuanhua). Mainly treats dysentery with pus and blood, tonifies the middle jiao, heals traumatic injuries from metal weapons, tonifies qi, prevents hunger, and promotes longevity.
Lufengfang (Honeycomb): Bitter and salty in flavor, neutral in qi. Toxic. (Avoid using with Ganjiang, Danshen, Huangqin, Shaoyao, Muli. Harvested on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, dried in shade. There are two sizes, both usable. Roasted before medicinal use.) Mainly treats Jingxian with convulsions, cold-heat evil qi, Dianji (mental disorders), Guijing Guduo (poisoning or parasitic diseases), intestinal hemorrhoids. Blood-boiled preparation is effective. Also treats bee stings and swelling/toxins; roasted and powdered, applied with lard, or decocted for washing. Decoction taken orally expels various harmful substances. Treats Bengzhong Louxia (metrorrhagia and leukorrhea) with red and white discharge, causes infertility (Note: Context may imply a specific contraindication or side effect as per original text), (Roasted powder, three-finger pinch, taken with wine.) Treats Ruyong (acute mastitis) with milk obstruction, (Burned to ash, powdered, 2 qian per dose, decocted in one cup of water to 0.6 cup, taken warm.)
Baila (White Beeswax): (Also known as Chongla, belongs to Metal. Generated by small insects feeding on tree sap on Wintergreen trees in winter.) Fully inherits the qi of astringency and coagulation; it is an essential herb for external medicine. Promotes tissue regeneration, stops bleeding, relieves pain, reconnects bones and tendons. For deficiency, combined with Hehuan Pi (Albizia Bark), it promotes muscle growth; used in ointments with divine efficacy.
Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case): Salty and sweet in flavor, neutral in qi. Non-toxic. (Works well with Longgu. Avoid Xuanfuhua. Those on mulberry branches are superior; they are mantis egg cases. Harvested in March, steamed and roasted before use, otherwise causes diarrhea.) Mainly treats Shangzhong, Shanxia (abdominal masses), impotence, benefits essence. Treats female amenorrhea and lower back pain, unblocks Wulin (five types of difficult urination), promotes urination. Treats male deficiency and kidney decline, nocturnal emission, enuresis, and turbid urine; indispensable for frequent urination.
Zachan (Cicada): Salty and sweet in flavor, cold in qi. Non-toxic. (Grows on willow and poplar trees, harvested in May. Steamed and dried, avoid insect damage.) Mainly treats pediatric Jingxian and night crying, Dianji with cold-heat. Women's dystocia, retained placenta. Also induces abortion. Cicada slough (Chantui) treats blurred vision and corneal opacity, wind-head and dizziness. Also treats skin itching due to wind-cold, powdered with Bohe (Mint), taken with wine, 1 qian, three times daily. Decoction treats poor eruption of chickenpox/rubella in children, effective. Chanhu (Cicada Flower), (A type of cicada with a horn-like protrusion on its shed head resembling a flower.) Mainly treats Xia'er Tiandiao (pediatric convulsions with eyes rolling up), Jingxian convulsions, night crying, and palpitations.
Mu Meng (Robber Fly): Bitter in flavor, neutral in qi, slightly cold. Toxic. (Harvested in May when biting cattle/horses and having blood in abdomen; dried, wings and legs removed, stir-fried.) Mainly treats red painful eyes, trauma-induced tearing, blood stasis and amenorrhea, cold-heat soreness, infertility. Fei Meng (Flying Robber Fly), (The flying variety, size of a honeybee.) Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in qi. Toxic. (Avoid Mahuang.) Mainly drives out blood stasis, breaks down lower abdominal blood accumulation, hard masses and Shanxia, cold-heat, unblocks blood vessels and nine orifices, treats Hou Bi (sore throat).
Banmao (Meloid Beetle): Pungent in flavor, cold in qi. Toxic. (Madao is the guiding herb; avoids Badou, Danshen, Kongqing. Harvested in July-August when beans mature, dried in shade. Remove wings and legs, stir-fry with glutinous rice until rice turns yellow, otherwise causes vomiting/diarrhea.) Mainly treats cold-heat, Guizhu Guduo (pestilence/poisoning), Shulou (scrofula), tinea, Luoli (scrofulous masses), malignant sores, erodes dead flesh. Breaks Shi Long (urinary stones), unblocks water passages. Blood accumulation, damages skin, induces abortion.
Qingling (Dragonfly): Slightly cold in qi, non-toxic. (Several species exist; use large-eyed green ones, remove wings/legs, stir-fry.) Strengthens Yin, stops seminal emission, warms Water Zang (Kidney).
Qianglang (Dung Beetle): Salty in flavor, cold in qi. Toxic. (Avoid Yangjiao, Shigao. Harvested on May 5th, steamed and stored. Roast before use. Remove legs, do not place in water, causes vomiting.) Mainly treats pediatric Jingxian convulsions, abdominal distension with cold-heat, Ganchong (parasites). Adult Dianji and mania, pounded into pills, inserted into anus to draw out hemorrhoid worms, cures. Dingchuang (carbuncle), (Take the white tip from the beetle's abdomen, apply for half a day, replace; when blood is exhausted and root emerges, it cures miraculously. Avoid oil/meat.) All malignant sores and Shulou, (Pound 10+ fresh or dry powder mixed with oil and apply.) Arrowhead embedded in bone, (Lightly roast Badou, mix evenly, apply; when unbearable itching occurs, shake arrowhead out.) Sand in eye, (Take fresh one, hold dorsal side over eye shadow; sand falls out.)
Zhizhu (Spider): Slightly cold in qi, toxic. (Do not use five-colored ones; take small-bodied, large-tailed, dark gray spiders with yellowish-green pus inside, remove head/legs, pound to paste for use.) Mainly treats adult and pediatric Zhubing (fixed disease), harvest web on July 7th. Treats Xi Wang (forgetfulness), keep in collar, unknown to others. Also applies juice for scorpion bites and snakebites. For bee/wasp and centipede venom, place live spider on pain site to absorb toxin. Pediatric Difu Dingxi (malnutrition with abdominal swelling), eat roasted ash. Warts, wrap with web to fall off. Fabei Chuang (back carbuncle), pound with vinegar, prick edges to bleed, apply, change when dry. Shulou swollen nodes with pus, burn 14 units, apply, cures.
Shupi (Mouse Skin): Salty and sweet in flavor, neutral in qi. Non-toxic, some say slightly toxic. (Keep dry.) Mainly treats Wuzhi (five types of hemorrhoids) and yin erosion, bloody discharge red/white, continuous multicolored blood, removes swelling/pain pulling to waist/back, boil in wine to kill. Also abdominal pain and Shan accumulation, burn to ash, take with wine. Also treats rebellious Stomach Qi, beneficial for opening stomach Qi.
Mushu (Male Mouse): Sweet in flavor, slightly warm in qi. Non-toxic. Mainly treats fractures to reconnect bones/tendons, pound and apply, change every 3 days, melt in oil with wax, apply to burns/scalds. Medical needles broken in flesh or arrowheads/blades in hidden areas, pound mouse liver/brain and apply. Feces with pointed ends treat pediatric epilepsy, abdominal distension, and post-illness relapse.
Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung): (Dung of Night-bat Trogopterus.) Sweet in flavor, warm in qi. Non-toxic. (Grind with good wine, fly-refine to remove sand/stones.) Mainly treats cold qi in heart/abdomen, pediatric Wugan (five types of malnutrition), wards off epidemics. Treats Changfeng (blood in stool), unblocks Qi meridians. Female blood closure, maternal blood syncope, stops menstrual bleeding, treats female heart pain and stabbing blood-Qi pain, very effective.
Qicao (Ground Beetle Larva): Salty in flavor, slightly warm in qi. Toxic. (Grows in river plains/marshes and household manure/grass; those walking backwards are superior.) Mainly treats evil blood and blood stasis, Bi Qi (obstruction), fractures, blood accumulation under ribs causing hardness/pain, amenorrhea, ocular films/opacities, extract juice for eyes. Also applies to abscesses, fistulas, malignant sores; treats Hou Bi, drip juice into throat to open.
Baijiangcan (Stiff Silkworm): Salty and pungent, neutral in qi. Non-toxic, some say slightly toxic. (Avoid Piaoxiao, Jiegeng, Fuling, Bibi. White, stiff, straight silkworms are best. Keep dry; dampness makes it toxic/unusable. Stir-fry before use.) Mainly treats pediatric Jingxian night crying, removes Three Worms. Removes black spots, scar tissue from sores, improves complexion. Treats male genital ulcers, female Bengzhong with white discharge, postpartum residual pain. Treats stroke aphasia and all wind diseases, removes skin wind sensations like insects. Treats Hou Bi, dissipates phlegm nodules. Powder applied to Ding swelling draws out root. Acute stroke Hou Bi near death, mix with fresh ginger juice and instill. Also applies to knife/chopper wounds.
Yuancan'e (Mulberry Silkworm Moth): Salty in flavor, warm in qi. Slightly toxic. (Use males. "Yuan" means second generation, highly fertile.) Mainly benefits essence/Qi, strengthens sexual function, prevents fatigue during intercourse, stops seminal emission/hematuria. Also treats traumatic injuries, frostbite, burns/scalds, removes scars. Feces (Can Sha/Silkworm Frass): Warm in qi, treats intestinal rumbling, heat-type thirst, wind-Bi and hives, paralysis. Can Tui (Silkworm Slough) treats Blood Wind disease, benefits women. Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, Changfeng bleeding, leukorrhea, dysentery. Apply to Ding swelling (burned for use). Gum recession/abscess, rub on gums. Mouth ulcers, dry application. Pediatric Zouma Gan (noma), add少许 Mosiang, apply. Doctors often use Can Tui paper; Easterners use slough before sleep; though different, Easterner's is correct, lightly roast, mix with other herbs for pills/powders.
Xie (Scorpion): Sweet and pungent, toxic. (Compact/small ones are best. Kill by fire drying, remove soil from abdomen. Whole or tail segments used; tail is more potent.) Mainly treats all wind hives, stroke hemiplegia, facial deviation, slurred speech, limb spasms, pediatric convulsions (indispensable). Wine-administered treats deafness.
Shilongzi (Reptile/Lizard): Salty in flavor, cold in qi. Slightly toxic. (Avoid Liuhuang, Banmao, Wuyi. Large ones 7-8 cun, gold/green color, grow in valleys, harvested May, dried on stones. Four names: Chongrong/Xiyi in marshes; Ting/Shougong on walls.) Mainly treats Wu Long (five urinary obstructions) and evil stagnant Qi, breaks Shi Lin (stones), stops bleeding, promotes urination.
Qu Sou (Earwig): Salty in flavor, cold in qi. Toxic. (Avoid Zaojiao, Changpu, harvested Oct, sun-dried.) Mainly treats chills/shivering in heart/abdomen, blood accumulation/Shan, breaks hardness, stops blood closure, promotes conception.
Wugong (Centipede): Pungent in flavor, warm in qi. Toxic. (Red-headed/legged are best. Harvested Jul-Aug, especially Dragon Boat Festival. Roast, remove head/legs.) Mainly treats Guizhu Guduo, eats snake/centipede/fish poison, kills ghosts/old spirits/temperate malaria, removes Three Worms, heart/abdomen cold-heat accumulations, induces abortion, removes evil blood. Chickens eat it, hence poisoning; treat bite with Black Chicken feces mixed with water. Averse to Kuyu/Youyu (slugs); touch kills them, so used to treat their poison; garlic also effective.
Gejie (Gecko): Salty in flavor, neutral in qi. Slightly toxic. (Male and female always together, shape like large Shougong. Must keep tail for potency. Remove head/legs, wash scales/clean, roast with butter.) Mainly treats chronic lung consumption cough, infectious wasting diseases, evil Qi. Treats cough with bleeding, dribbling urination, unblocks water passages. Two uses in medicine; men take female, women take male.
Shufu (Woodlouse): Sour in flavor, warm in qi. Non-toxic. (Found in damp places under pots/soil pits, harvested May 5th.) Mainly treats Qi Long (urinary retention), female amenorrhea/blood masses, epilepsy with cold-heat, promotes urination.
Yiyu (Silverfish): Salty in flavor, warm in qi. Non-toxic. (Found in old paper, i.e., Bai Duyu.) Mainly treats female Shanxia, urinary obstruction. Pediatric stroke neck stiffness, massage back. Also stranguria/retention, massage umbilicus/lower abdomen to promote urination. Also applies to sores, removes scars.
Xama (Toad/Frog): Pungent and sweet, cold in qi. Toxic. (Harvested May 5th, dried in shade. Eastern direction ones are best, roast or burn to ash for use.) Mainly treats evil Qi, breaks hard blood masses, abscesses/yin sores, prevents heat diseases. Treats pediatric Ganchong, kills parasites/Shulou/malignant sores, insects eating lower parts, dog bites, rabies madness. Can fuse jade, apply fat to carve jade like wax. Danxi says: Boiling causes dampness,不宜食用. Pediatric severe diarrhea/dysentery, (Burn to powder, mix with rice, 1 cun bi.) Tinea, (Burn to powder, mix with lard, apply.) Fractures/trauma, (Pound fresh, apply; peel skin also effective.) Warm disease with macules/fatigue, (Take one, pound fresh, squeeze juice, drink.) Chan Su (Toad Venom between eyebrows), treats abscesses/carbuncles, toothache, gum bleeding, dip paper twist in dry powder, press on bleeding site to stop immediately. Mix with Zhusha/Mosiang into pill size of hemp seed, one pill empty stomach for pediatric Ganchunmia. Brain Ganchun, mix with breast milk, drip nose, effective.
Lv Sang Piao Xiao (Green Mulberry Mantis Egg): (Like small yellow snail, climbs mulberry leaves after rain.) Mainly treats rectal prolapse, burn to powder, mix with ointment, apply, shrinks immediately.
Kuyu (Slug): Salty in flavor, cold in qi. Non-toxic. (Snail-like, two antennae vs four for snail, fleshy shell attachment.) Mainly treats Zefeng Pipi (wind-stroke deviation), cramps, rectal prolapse, Jingxian spasms. Snail treatment same. Fresh ground water stops thirst. Take 1 liang, burn to ash, mix with lard, apply to prolapse, shrinks immediately. Also mix with real Ge Fen, apply to Fabei.
Lougu (Mole Cricket): Salty in flavor, cold in qi. Non-toxic, some say toxic. (Night-active ones best. Harvested Summer Solstice, dried, stir-fry for use.) Mainly treats dystocia, removes thorns from flesh. Ulcerates abscesses, relieves choking, detoxifies, removes malignant sores. Ten types of water diseases, edema/distension/panting, difficult urination, powder mixed with warm wine/decoction, 1 qian bi. Also says: Upper body part astringent, stops bowel/urine; lower body part purgative, promotes bowel/urine. For removing thorns, use brain paste.
Bai Xiang Diyin (Earthworm): Salty in flavor, cold in qi. Slightly toxic. (Harvested Mar, dried in shade, remove soil/eggs, wash salt water, light roast.) Mainly treats She Xia, removes Three Worms, Fusuo Guizhu Guduo, kills long worms, dissolves into water entering scallion tube. Treats Shanghan latent heat/manic delirium, abdominal jaundice. Also treats Kidney Wind, lower limb gout, send with salt water. If bitten by worm, soak bite in salt water, drink salt water. Feces seal rabies wound, pulls out hair, miraculous. Warm disease high fever/delirium, (Grind juice, drink.) Urinary obstruction, (Grind juice, mix cold water, drink half bowl.) Gu poisoning, take 14, soak in 3 sheng vinegar, worm dies, drink juice.)
Tianzhong Luo (Field Snail): Very cold in qi. (Grows in paddy fields, size of plum/peach.) Mainly treats hot red painful eyes, insert Huanglian powder, wait for juice, apply to eyes. Haige (Clam Shell): Bitter/salty, neutral/cold. Non-toxic. (Shuqi is guiding herb. Avoid Goudan, Gansui, Yuanhua. Rotting shells from sea waves/sand naturally round. Small and old are best.) Mainly treats cough/rebellious Qi, panting/fullness, chest pain/cold-heat, treats impotence.
Wenge (Clam Shell): Salty in flavor, neutral. Non-toxic. (Grows in East Sea, has patterns. Unrotted shell with patterns. Same category as Haige, just new/old distinction.) Mainly treats malignant sores, erodes Wuzhi. Cough/Chest Bi, lower back pain/hypochondriac tension. Shulou large hole bleeding, Bengzhong Louxia. Resolves phlegm/softens hardness, stops thirst, dries dampness/astringes. Treats acute Ganchun eroding mouth/nose, near death, burn to ash, mix with pig lard, apply. Also treats hernia pain, descending/dissolving/softening/drying, mix with Xiangfu powder/Ginger juice, take.
Zhenzhu (Pearl): Cold in qi, non-toxic. (New, intact, un-drilled is best. Grinding without sound indicates quality.) Mainly calms Heart. Wrapped in silk, stuffed in ear, treats deafness. Applied to face, makes skin lustrous/beautiful. Powder instilled in eyes. Treats corneal opacity. Used in pediatric heat/convulsion formulas.
Beizi (Conch Shell): Salty in flavor, neutral. Toxic. (Best burned before use.) Mainly treats eye opacity, Guizhu Guduo. Abdominal pain/bloody stool, Wu Long. Promotes urination, releases muscle/resolves heat nodules.
Guijia (Turtle Shell): Salty/sweet, neutral. Non-toxic. (Avoid Shashen, fears Goudan. Drilled by diviners named Baiguiban, large ones best for medicine. Fresh shed ones must not get damp, dampness makes toxic. Roast with butter, lard, or wine.) Mainly treats Louxia red/white, breaks Shanxia malaria, Wuzhi yin erosion, damp itch/flaccidity, heavy/weak limbs, pediatric fontanelle non-closure, stubborn head sores, female yin sores, heart/abdominal pain, back soreness, bone cold-heat, Shanghan relapse, or severe body cold-heat. Great Yin-tonifying power, strong, removes blood stasis, reconnects bones/tendons, treats fatigue. Long-term use lightens body/prevents hunger, benefits Qi/intelligence, promotes appetite. Turtle is extreme Yin, born of North Qi, thus tonifies Yin-blood deficiency. Alchemists use it to tonify Heart due to spiritual nature, very effective.
Biejia (Softshell Turtle Shell): Salty in flavor, neutral. Non-toxic. (Avoid Fanshi. Fresh shell best. Nine-ribbed best, soak in vinegar, roast yellow.) Mainly treats heart/abdominal Shanju, hard accumulations with cold-heat, removes polyps, yin erosion/hemorrhoid bad flesh. Reduces swelling, treats Wenmiao, consumptive bone-steaming heat. Pediatric rib hardness, female Louxia multicolored, emaciation, induces abortion. Head burned to ash treats pediatric diseases. Also treats rectal prolapse, blood can be applied. Xie (Crab): Salty in flavor, cold. Toxic. (Good to eat after August, better after frost.) Mainly treats chest evil Qi, heat knot pain, facial deviation/swelling. Spoils lacquer, burning attracts mice, resolves knots/scatters blood, heals lacquer dermatitis. Yellow melts lacquer to water, leg marrow and shell yellow roasted to powder, applied to traumatic wounds reconnects severed tendons. Claws induce abortion, break old blood. Postpartum blood closure, wine/decoction taken, good.
Shuizhi (Leech): Salty/bitter, neutral/slightly cold. Toxic. (Fears salt and ironstone. Use small water leeches, harvested May-June, dried. Remove eggs if present, finely chop, light roast until yellow, then ripe. Do not enter abdomen to breed/harm.) Mainly drives out evil blood/stasis/amenorrhea, erodes blood abscesses/accumulations, infertility, promotes urination. Also induces abortion, treats fractures effectively.
