The Yellow Emperor asked: When the beard and hair are yellowish-red, it indicates excess heat and abundant Qi; when they are white, it indicates deficient Blood and Qi; when they are black, it indicates abundant Blood and relatively less Qi. Beautiful eyebrows indicate that the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel has abundant Blood; a full beard extending to the cheeks and chin indicates that the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) channel has abundant Blood; a beautiful chin beard indicates that the Yangming (Yang Brightness) channel has abundant Blood. This is determined by the natural laws of the channels.
Qibo said: In ancient times, those who understood the Way followed the principles of Yin and Yang, harmonized with proper health preservation techniques, regulated their diet, maintained regular daily routines, and avoided excessive exertion. Thus, they could maintain harmony between form and spirit, completing their natural lifespan and living to be over a hundred years old. (Xu Chunfu notes: If one truly understood the Way as the ancients did, medication would not be needed, and the beard and hair would naturally remain ungrayed alongside the vitality of form and spirit. Modern people fail to emulate the ancients and do not know how to nourish themselves; thus, few avoid premature graying and hair loss. I believe modern individuals are invaded by internal emotional disturbances and external pathogens. Without medicinal support, few can preserve their form and spirit. One should prepare nourishing medicines around the age of forty, rather than waiting until decline sets in. This allows one to recover a tenth of the vitality lost compared to the ancients, which is far superior to self-neglect. This represents preserving life through secondary means when the primary natural course cannot be fully followed.)
When Qi and Blood are abundant, the beard and hair are lustrous; when they decline, the beard and hair turn white. This is an inevitable principle. After the age of thirty, regularly taking Kidney-tonifying and Yin-nourishing medicines to preserve and harmonize Qi and Blood ensures that the beard remains ungrayed in old age, which has been verified. Using medicine only after decline has set in cannot achieve this. Prevention before onset is always easier. Attempting to reverse changes after they have occurred rarely succeeds.
Shenxian Liu Zi Wan (Immortal Six-Seed Pill) and Qizhen Zhibao Dan (Seven-Treasure Ultimate Treasure Pill) are both excellent formulas for nourishing Yin. Preparing these two pills before the beard and hair turn white and taking them alternately without interruption will surely promote longevity and darken the hair. Intermittent use yields little effect; the wise should exercise caution.
For men, Shenxian Liu Zi Wan taken after age thirty, twice a year continuously, prevents graying forever. For those over forty with slight graying, or young men with dry, yellowish hair, taking this pill for one hundred days naturally results in jet-black hair, with miraculous efficacy.
*Tu Si Zi* (Cuscutae Semen, prepared), *Jin Ding Zi* (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos - note: text likely refers to a specific preparation or synonym, often associated with Chrysanthemum or similar, but literally 'Gold Ingot'), *Fu Pen Zi* (Rubiae Fructus), *Wu Wei Zi* (Schisandrae Fructus), *Gou Qi Zi* (Lycii Fructus), *She Chuang Zi* (Cnidii Fructus, stir-fried), each 1 liang; *He Shou Wu* (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, soaked in wine overnight, dried); *Niu Xi* (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, same preparation); *Di Gu Pi* (Lycii Cortex); *Shu Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, soaked in wine), each 3 liang; *Bo Shang Hui Xiang* (Foeniculi Fructus, salt-stir-fried); *Chuan Mu Gua* (Chaenomelis Fructus), each 2 liang.
Grind the above twelve herbs into fine powder. Use clarified wine from soaking Tu Si Zi to make a paste for pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, warm wine administered before meals on an empty stomach. Another variation adds *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix), *Bai Zhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and *Fu Ling* (Poria), each increased by 1 liang, yielding even more miraculous effects. Strictly avoid "Three Whites" (scallions, garlic, chives); sexual indulgence renders it ineffective.

Grind into fine powder. Starting from the first day of the month, brush teeth facing west with back to east, avoiding sunlight in the morning and lamplight at night. Swallow the medicine and saliva after brushing, apply to beard. Within one month, white hair turns black. Avoid "Three Whites."
Erqi Dan greatly darkens beard and hair, with unparalleled efficacy.

Remove, tighten a white thread, and dab the medicine onto the center. If the dye penetrates to both ends, it is effective. If not, bury for a few more days.
Sansheng Gao treats beard and hair loss, promoting regrowth.
Hei Fu Zi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix), Man Jing Zi (Vitalbae Fructus), Bai Zi Ren (Platycladi Semen), each half liang.
