Grind the aforementioned herbs into a fine powder. Take three qian on an empty stomach, administered with wine or in pill form.
For treating ulcers between the toes and sores on both feet caused by summer heat and scratching:
Chew fine tea leaves thoroughly and apply the paste to the affected area; it will heal immediately.
For treating chapped skin on hands and feet:
Asphalt (2 liang), Beeswax (1 liang).
Boil and stir evenly over fire, store in a clay jar. First wash the affected area with hot water to soften the skin, dry it, then slightly warm the medicine over low fire and apply/ rub onto the skin.
Formula for severe headache due to wind-cold accompanied by vomiting:
Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (1 qian), Mentha Haplocalyx, Angelica Dahurica, Saposhnikovia Root, Licorice Root, Asarum, Notopterygium Root, Schizonepeta Spike, Ligusticum Wallichii, Fringeless Magnolia Flower Bud (all in equal proportions).
Add one and a half cups of water and a pinch of fine tea, decoct until seven-tenths remain. Take warm after meals.
For treating red and white sweat spots:
Moxibustion at the Jia Bai acupoint will cure it immediately, or pricking the point to bleed also works. This has been verified: first mark the nipples black, extend both arms straight to clamp the body; the blackened spot is the acupoint.
Qingbai San (Green and White Powder) treats all types of toothache.
Blue Salt (2 liang), White Salt, Sichuan Pepper (decocted juice; each 4 liang).
Mix the two salts with pepper juice, stir-fry until dry, grind into powder, and rub onto teeth to permanently prevent dental diseases. Use the mouthwash to rinse eyes to prevent eye diseases.
Another formula:
In spring, collect locust tree buds or branches as thick as a finger, quantity unspecified. Decoct into a concentrated liquid, boil together with clean salt until dry, grind into fine powder. Apply to teeth early in the morning, rinse mouth and wash eyes; this brightens eyes, strengthens teeth, and darkens hair and beard. The salt must be washed with water to remove black mud, boiled dry first, then locust juice added and boiled together.
For treating fish bone stuck in throat:
Dry half a bowl of Toona sinensis seeds in shade, crush them, mix with hot wine and drink. After a while, the bone will be vomited out along with the substance.
Another formula:
Eat olives to help the bone pass down. Or crush olive pits into powder, take with flowing water.
For treating chicken bone stuck in throat:
Kill a live chicken, while still hot, remove the yellow membrane from inside the gizzard. Wash clean, wrap the membrane with rush pith, burn to ash over fire, grind into powder. Blow the powder into the throat using a small bamboo tube; the bone will dissolve. Ensure no meat is visible.
For treating scorpion stings:
Equal parts of Alum and Pinellia Tuber, ground into powder, mixed with good vinegar and applied topically. Pain stops and toxin exits.
Another formula:
Apply Chalcanthite powder to the affected area; it heals immediately.
Doudou Formula (Belly Band Formula), two methods published by Scholar Gu of Kunshan for public benefit.
White Sandalwood (1 liang), Lingling Fragrance (5 qian), Horseshoe Root, Angelica Dahurica, Aristolochia Manshuriensis, Cimicifuga Rhizome, Dragon's Blood (each 5 qian).
Strychnos Seed (8 qian), Antelope Horn (1 liang), Sweet Scabious, Clove Bark (7 qian), Musk (9 fen). Divide into three belly bands.
The above twelve ingredients are stuffed with Qichai Moxa cotton into white silk belly bands. Initial users wear it for three days, then remove it. On the fifth day, wear it again. After one month, wear it regularly. It specifically treats abdominal masses, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea, women's red and white vaginal discharge, and women with irregular menstruation who have not conceived for a long time. Pregnant women must not use it.
Motherwort Herb:
Grind the single herb into powder, avoid iron vessels, refine honey to make pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose. Long-term use can also help women conceive. It is effective for all pre- and post-natal disorders in women. Dosage details are recorded in the Ji Yin Fan Hun Dan formula in the Women's Section.
Baidu San (Hundred Cures Powder) treats seasonal headaches and stiff neck, high fever with aversion to cold, body aches, alternating chills and fever, cough, nasal congestion with heavy voice, wind-phlegm headache, vomiting and hiccups with chills and fever.
Ginseng Radix, Red Poria (peeled), Licorice Root (roasted), Peucedanum Root, Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, Notopterygium Root, Angelica Pubescens Root, Platycodon Root, Bupleurum Root, Aurantium Fruit (bran-roasted).
Grind into coarse powder. Take four qian per dose with one cup of water, three slices of ginger, and a little mint. Decoct until eight-tenths remain. Take warm at any time.
*Huoren Shu* states: Treats epidemic diseases of all seasons. I have used it to save people throughout my life without fail every day. It addresses the abnormal qi of the four seasons: winter should be cold but is hot, summer should be hot but is cold, spring should be warm but is cool, autumn should be cool but is warm. Thus, patients present with similar symptoms regardless of severity, or within a specific county or city, though there may be variations based on terrain (hills vs. marshes). Generally, it causes phlegm-fluid retention, wind obstruction, fever, irritability, headache, and body pain. Even if diet and routine remain normal, symptoms may progress to hoarseness. Market people call it "Wanderer Plague" because the cough sounds weak and continuous, like a frog croaking, hence also called "Toad Plague." It also treats red eyes, mouth sores, swollen cheeks and throat closure, wind obstruction with sneezing, thick sticky sputum, and similar conditions across regions. If several doses are ineffective, one must take Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) to expel stale phlegm, then resume medication until efficacy is achieved. Removing Red Poria and Platycodon Root, adding Green Tangerine Peel and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome creates Qingqi San (Clear Qi Powder), with the same treatment method, but using Schizonepeta Spike as a guide herb instead of ginger and mint. Adding Kudzu Root to Baidu San is beneficial. If multiple doses are ineffective and there is alternating chills and fever, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) must be taken at any time for several doses without error. These three methods treat phlegm-fluid retention, wind obstruction, and fever; Guntan Wan is secondary, while decoctions are the essence. For San Yang Hong Kong Foot (Gout/Jock Itch), characterized by upper phlegm-fluid retention, wind-toxin, and fever, Baidu San is generally used. For constipation and bleeding from nose/mouth with phlegm/snot, add Scutellaria Root and Rhubarb, decoct and take similarly, or use Qingqi San. It is concise, miraculous, fast-acting, and comparable to Chenxiang San Tang.
Fanhun Dan (Reviving Soul Pill) treats all chronic critical illnesses where food intake is refused and vital energy is nearly exhausted.
Long Pepper Fruit, Malt (roasted), Green Tangerine Peel (pith removed), Ginseng Radix, Bitter Platycodon Root, Bupleurum Root, White Cardamom Seed, Southern Costus Root, Galangal, Pinellia Fermented Dough.
Grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose with one cup of water, decoct until seven-tenths remain. Take hot for great effect. Avoid greasy, fishy, and slippery foods. This medicine is excellent; I have saved many people, yet few survive completely. Why? Because these patients are close to death; once symptoms slightly subside, they regain hope and often stop treatment prematurely. Only virgins and a few Daoist practitioners achieve complete recovery. Future patients should decide for themselves. If constipation is severe, take Guntan Wan intermittently, thirty pills daily, to moisten the bowels and descend qi/phlegm, preserving previous efforts. If the initial cause was excess syndrome leading to dysphagia, follow Guntan Wan dosage strictly until efficacy is achieved. I have saved many; details omitted.
Qunie Tang (Malaria Expelling Decoction) treats all new and old malaria cases. This formula originated in the 15th year of Zhiyuan, when Marshal Amudu fell ill with malaria during his southern campaign, and hundred methods failed. Upon reaching Weiyang, official physicians were summoned. My acquaintance, Mr. Shi, was suddenly brought before the tent under armed guard. The Marshal, suffering from long-term malaria and believing he would die, ordered that he be cured immediately. Mr. Shi, extremely worried, casually combined a prescription which took effect immediately. He received great rewards and promotion. Years later, his servant traveled with me to the southern frontier, where officials and soldiers commonly suffered from malaria. They obtained this formula, which proved effective, and it became widely popular. Meeting Mr. Shi again in Weiyang, we revised it. Mr. Shi said: "It lacks one ingredient: Citrus Reticulata Peel." I added it, but efficacy decreased. Later I realized he was joking; I reverted to the original four ingredients, which have remained effective for forty years.
Cinchona Bark (Changshan), Tsaoko Fruit (roasted), Anemarrhena Rhizome (hairs removed), Fritillaria Bulb (heart removed).
Equal parts. Take four qian per dose (three qian for weak, elderly, or children). Add one cup of wine, decoct until eight-tenths remain. Do not overcook, or it loses efficacy. Take hot after dawn on the day of attack. Soak the dregs in wine, decoct again hot just before the next attack. Miraculous effect, too numerous to describe. I once treated a woman with daily afternoon fever. Physicians tried hundreds of methods, following meridians, but she worsened. I advised her to take these four ingredients. Physicians refused. I said: "This is pure heat malaria; treating it is like taking something from a bag." She reluctantly took it and recovered. People dislike the wine smell, but my relatives and elders with malaria could tolerate it. Originally odorless; I pre-boiled Cinchona Bark in wine, dried it, and added it to the medicine. Patients can also decoct with water alone. Do not assume Cinchona Bark is only an emetic and discard it; no one has ever vomited from it. Malaria is a phlegm disease; Cinchona Bark specifically treats phlegm. Mild vomiting occurs due to conflict between phlegm and medicine. Some vomit naturally, called "drunken malaria" by laypeople, not caused by Cinchona Bark.
Tongshen Wan (Spirit-Penetrating Pill) (from my family's secret formulas) treats all malaria with miraculous effect, available year-round for saving lives. Users need only avoid raw, cold, fishy, greasy, and slippery foods; other dietary restrictions do not apply. I have collected many malaria formulas in my life, avoiding those conflicting with Arsenic or having malignant interactions. Only these two formulas are truly excellent for saving lives.
Dead Dried Peach on Tree (6 liang, powdered), Black Soybean Powder (1 liang), Croton Seed (7 grains, shelled, finely ground and added).
Mix with fresh well water to form pills the size of paulownia seeds, coated with Cinnabar. On the day of attack, at dawn, face east and chant to the Medicine King and Yaoshang Bodhisattva. Swallow one pill with fresh well water for immediate effect. Those with daily attacks take for two consecutive days. For children, adjust pill size accordingly.
Jinhuang San (Golden Yellow Powder) (from previous text) treats hematuria.
Sophora Flower (cleaned, roasted), Curcuma Wenyujin Rhizome (wrapped in wet paper and baked cooked; each 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with light fermented soybean decoction. Immediate effect at any time.
Peach Kernel Method for treating miasma heat toxicity:
Good fresh peach kernels (2 sheng, tips removed), Good Asafoetida (2 liang).
Decoct in one dou of aged wine until wine is consumed, dry roast, and store in a silk bag. When entering miasma areas, chew seven pieces on an empty stomach daily, taken with wine. Extremely effective.
Treating snake, tiger, virus, and insect bites (from previous text):
Dissolve Alum in water. Determine the size of the affected area. Make a ring from paper twists, wet it, and place around the wound firmly, leaving the damaged center exposed. Sprinkle a little Realgar powder in the center. Pour Alum solution into the paper ring over the wound. In a short time, toxic yellow fluid will drain out, including any red thread-like patterns. For severe injuries, tightly tie a rope behind the wound immediately to prevent toxin spreading inward, then apply. If Realgar is unavailable, this method still works.
Tongguan San (Previous Formula) treats all facial paralysis (mouth and eye deviation).
Aconite Lateral Root (raw), Blue-headed Alum (each 1 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Take one zi (small measure) per dose, blow into the nostrils using a reed tube. Immediate effect upon discharge of nasal mucus and saliva. Patient must hold water in mouth and close nasal breathing to prevent medicine from falling out or blowing into the mouth. Unparalleled efficacy.
Yufeng San (Previous Formula) treats all severe wind diseases, except collapsed nose bridge which is incurable. All other recent or chronic cases heal upon administration.
Lightly Fermented Soybean (powdered), True Mercury Calomel, Aurantium Fruit Powder.
Take two qian of each on a small coin. Decoct at dawn, take with glutinous rice drink. After breakfast, feel slightly drowsy, wanting to sleep but unable to; this is the medicine searching for wind. After expelling evil substances, follow with pill medicine.
Heshi Wan (Nipplewort Pill) Treatment as above, duration unspecified, stop when effective.
Nipplewort (2 liang, lightly roasted; wild origin is best, as this grass resembles *Di Song* flower alias. *Di Song* has opposite leaves at nodes, while Nipplewort does not), Saposhnikovia Root (1 liang), Sanguisorba Root, Ephedra Stem (nodes removed), Realgar (clear quality, ground separately), Gastrodia Elata Rhizome (each half liang).
Grind into powder, bind with vinegar paste into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 35 pills per dose with warm wine, three times. Avoid chicken, pork, fish, garlic, slippery/greasy foods, fried/baked items, pepper/hot foods, sexual activity, and financial stress. Those who endure hardship for three years see 80-90% success; otherwise, even if effective, treatment may halt. I have helped many, especially farmers and commoners, rarely failing. Those who indulge slightly may not fully recover. Patients should cherish their health.
Taoxi Fang Qibao Wan (Qi Treasure Pill) treats waist and flank pain, feeling like holding a jar, hard skin, drum-like percussion, swollen legs, inability to bend knees or lie flat, emaciation from head to Danzhong, cold overflow in Zhongwan, limb weakness, loss of appetite, qi and food stagnation, or generalized edema. Pregnant women must not take.
Black Morning Glory Seed, Rhubarb (half liang), Areca Seed, Green Tangerine Peel (pith removed; each 1 liang), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, Angelica Sinensis, Tangerine Peel, Fennel (lightly roasted), Southern Costus Root.
Grind into powder, mix with soap pod paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose. If ineffective, increase to 100 pills for excess syndromes, taken with raw [herb?] or rush water to induce purging for effect. Duration unspecified; purge 3-5 times, seeing water is ideal; if not, add more pills. If unable to purge, it is untreatable. Treats all qi-blood stagnation, severe wind-toxin, gout spreading with swelling/pain, constipation, gout entering abdomen causing chest fullness, alternating chills/fever resembling Taiyang disease.
Ju Fang Xiao Qixiang Wan treats adults and children with stagnation from wheat/noodle toxins, or generalized edema due to sores/scabies. Use aged radish seeds cleaned and roasted, mix with medicine, chew thoroughly. Adjust dose for children. Drink a sip of white soup after. If ineffective, continue daily. For constipation, additionally take Ju Fang Qingmuxiang Wan until bowel movement occurs.
Shenxiao Wushi Tang Wan (from Yefu Duoxiao Fang) treats hydroperitoneum (water gu), generalized edema soft as mud, deep-seated masses, and fixed accumulations. Do not consume Licorice Root while taking this medicine.
Knoxia Root (peeled, half liang), Kansui Root (raw weighed, half liang), Genkwa Flower (soaked in good wine overnight, drained, stir-fried yellow, 1 liang), Croton Seed (peeled, heart/oil removed, boiled in vinegar 20 times, half liang, oil removed), Pig Tooth Soap Pod (2 liang, peeled), Pepper.
Grind all except Croton Seed into powder. Mix with Croton powder, grind uniformly. Bind with water into pills the size of mung beans. Take 5-10 pills at night. With one cup of water, add small amounts of white rice, white flour, black bean, lettuce, and pork. Decoct until half cup remains. Take medicine with this warm liquid. Stop when root cause is eliminated. Increase dose if ineffective.
For severe swelling and急促 breathing, must eliminate bad water for effect. Avoid greasy, fishy, slippery foods. Pregnant women must not take. For edema with persistent diarrhea and difficult urination, termed "flood overflowing," do not use; use subsequent medicines instead.
Tingli Muxiang San (from *Xuanming Lun*) treats severe internal/external damp-heat, edema and distension, red/difficult urination, loose stools.
Descurainia Seed, Red Poria (peeled), Polyporus, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (stalks removed), Cinnamon Bark (each 1 fen), Costus Root (5 fen).
Alisma Rhizome, Tetrapanax Pith (nodes removed), Licorice Root (each half liang), Talcum (fragrant, fine, white, ground fine, water-washed 3 liang).
Grind into powder. Take three qian per dose with white soup. If urine output is low and diarrhea persists, it is difficult to treat, but commonly effective.
Secretly Taught Shenmiao Zijin Wan by Nobles treats various cold-damp bi syndromes, bone and joint pain.
Zijin Pi (rolled outward, purple-iron colored inside, head powder half jin), Guangfu Caowu (peeled tips, 3 liang, powder), Strychnos Seed (meat 3 liang, finely cut, soaked in rice vinegar until permeable, ground to paste).
Use Strychnos paste to knead with the first two powders. Bind with vinegar paste into pills the size of paulownia seeds. For arm pain, take before bed. For leg pain, take late at night on empty stomach. Take 30-40 pills, up to 50, sent down with cold Quince Wine. Avoid hot foods after taking. I obtained this formula in my youth in Huguang Province. Few possess it (only 3-5 people including me); its efficacy is unparalleled.
*Suwen* Kongtao Zheng Huixiang Lianshi Wan (from *Xuanming Lun*)
Treats small intestine disease knotting above the waist without pain, or rushing up to heart/lungs, related to pathogenic influence, plus all cold-heat hernias. Repeated use shows miraculous effect. No formula surpasses it.
Fennel (roasted), Sichuan Chinaberry Seed (peeled/cored, bran-roasted), Evodia Fruit (soaked in water, stems removed), Horse Lin Flower (stems/tips removed, vinegar-roasted), Broadleaf Orange Peel (white part removed; each 1 liang), Genkwa Flower (vinegar-roasted, half jin).
Grind into powder, bind with vinegar paste into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills per dose; increase to 20-50 if ineffective. Take on empty stomach before meals with salt wine or salt soup. Do not consume Licorice Root or cold foods before and after. Laypeople immediately prescribe Pancong San for inguinal hernia, unaware that it is not just cold qi causing disease, but also wind-cold-damp-heat, emotional disturbances, and dietary oppression affecting the Kidney Meridian. If external genitals are not swollen/painful but lower back pain radiates to abdomen, it is called internal hernia, suitable for this formula. Generally, even with miraculous medicine, this disease can only be relieved, not cured at the root. I have seen patients with intense internal attacking pain, varied sounds, vomiting yellow fluid, passing blood sheets, subsiding only after taking this medicine. Another case: persistent genital pain, prolonged lack of fluids, severe constipation for days, varying sized lumps on body, limbs cold, painful turning, six pulses large/excess/rapid, no appetite. I used 100 pills of Guntan Wan from Volume 14, taken with warm water. Fluids moved, qi smoothed, bowels opened. One more dose allowed walking in three days. For external genital pain, irritability, thirst, difficult urination, use Wuling San with 20 rush stems and Tetrapanax Pith decocted together. For lower body coldness, use a bag of roasted salt, change frequently through clothing to warm external genitals, adjusting dosage appropriately. Both painful and non-painful external genital swelling are treated. Now selecting two formulas from *Zhouhou*.
Formula for External Genital Swelling Growing Daily, Painful or Not (from Baopuzi *Zhouhou Fang*)
Soap Pod Thorns (100), Glutinous Rice Flour (mixed with water into a cake, diameter like bowl mouth, thickness about one cun).
On the day of the community festival, give one thorn to each person. The patient holds the flour cake and takes thorns one by one from festival participants. Participant asks: "What is it?" Patient replies: "Thorn." Repeat this question-answer process for all thorns. Insert thorns one by one into the cake. Return home, place in a quiet place. When the cake dries, the swelling disappears. If the community has fewer than 100 people, arrange with 2-3 other communities to ensure enough participants ask the question.
Another Formula:
Crush turnip roots, apply paste to swollen area until effective. If turnip roots unavailable, fresh almond kernels can be used.
