Qu Sou (Earwig), a malevolent insect, hides in wall crevices and sprays urine onto human shadows, causing sores all over the body as if scalded by boiling water or fire. The treatment involves burning the wing feathers of a black-bone chicken to ash, mixing with oil, and applying to the affected area. Since various insects fear chickens, this method is effective.
Alternatively, apply Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati (Dahuang) ground with vinegar until healed. Another method is to apply Alumen (Baifan).
(Eye injury from She Gong Chong): Eyes immediately swell and become painful beyond endurance. Apply thick ink made from clear-soot inkstick into the eyes; after a short while, use a brush to roll out the toxin along with the brush.
When bitten by silkworms, toxins enter the flesh, causing chills and fever. Apply mashed leaves of Boehmeria nivea (Zhuye) or its juice to the wound. Currently, silkworm farmers place B. nivea near silkworms to prevent such occurrences.
Burn cat hair until it retains its medicinal properties, add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang), mix with sesame oil, and apply to the wound to prevent harm.
Mix Hu Fen (Lead White) with ginger juice and apply to the sore, or rub with pure oil. Internally, drink sheep milk. *Bencao* states: Spider bites cause silk-like growths on the whole body; only drinking sheep milk can detoxify it. In the Zhenyuan era, Cui Yuanwai Congzhi reported witnessing a person bitten by a spider whose abdomen swelled like pregnancy; abandoned by his family and begging on the road, he was met by a monk who taught him to drink sheep milk, leading to recovery within days.
(The condition resembles Feng Da [Leprosy/Big Wind], with loss of eyebrows and beard.) Wash the affected area with hot water infused with Duan Shi (Calcined Hematite), cooling it down before washing; prolonged soaking is beneficial. Children often suffer from earthworm toxicity, causing swelling of the penis and scrotum like blisters. Apply duck blood, or hold the duck's beak against the affected area for a short time to reduce swelling, as ducks consume these creatures. Alternatively, washing with warm salt water is effective.
She Gong Chong (Arrow Bug) found in streams specifically targets human shadows. Those hit fall ill with symptoms resembling malaria or Taiyang disease (Exterior Cold Syndrome), commonly known as "Fa Sha." Severe cases are fatal and incurable. Liu Zongyuan’s poem about walking in Lingnan says: “The Arrow Bug cunningly waits for travelers' shadows, while the Typhoon Mother startles passengers' boats.” If afflicted, urgently treat with the following formula:
Fermented Soybean (Dou Chi) (8 ounces), Scallion White (Cong Bai) (1 bunch), Radix Puerariae (Gegen) (2 liang), Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Shengma) (2 liang).
Chop the ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water, remove dregs, and take warm. Decoct the dregs again for a second dose.
Another prescription: Equal parts of Alumen (Baifan) and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao), ground into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with cold water.
Another prescription: Mix Realgar (Xionghuang) powder with wine for oral administration, and also apply to the affected area.
*Mingyi Lu* records: Tigers that are arrow-wounded eat clean mud. Wild boars that are arrow-wounded chew and eat Shepherd's Purse (Ji Cai). Pheasants injured by hawks apply Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang) leaves to themselves. Even birds, beasts, insects, and animals know how to detoxify, let alone humans?
Liu Chuyin once saw a large bee stuck in a spider web in his study. The spider advanced to attack but was stung by the bee and fell to the ground. Soon, the spider's abdomen swelled and burst. It slowly crawled into the grass, bit open a taro stem, and rubbed its wound against the bitten spot for a long time until its abdomen gradually returned to normal. Since then, when people are stung by bees, they mash taro stems and apply them to the wound.
