By applying the Ten Heavenly Stems, Jun Huo (Minister Fire) does not govern the annual Yun (Five Movements). Among the Six Qi (Six Climate Factors), Jun Huo is revered; among the Five Yun, Shi Tu (Damp Earth) is revered. Therefore, the years of Jia and Ji are called Nan Zheng (Southern Sovereignty), because Earth, through its generative numbers, penetrates Metal, Wood, Water, and Fire, occupying the central position. The Ruler is honored, facing South to issue commands. The other four positions serve Him as ministers, facing North to receive commands, thus maintaining distinction. Human pulse responds accordingly.
In the years of Jia and Ji, the two Yun face South. In discussing the pulse, the Cun (Inch) position is in the South and the Chi (Cubit) position is in the North. When Shao Yin (Lesser Yin) governs the Heaven (Si Tian), both Cun pulses do not respond. This is because South is considered Upper and North is Lower. This is consistent with the principle that men receive Qi facing South, so the Chi pulse should be weak, while women receive Qi facing North, so the Chi pulse is often strong; due to Yin Qi sinking downward, the pulse does not respond.
The positions of the Six Qi are such that Shao Yin is in the center, Jue Yin (Absolute Yin) is on the right, and Tai Yin (Greater Yin) is on the left; this cannot be changed. Shao Yin governs both Cun and Chi. When Jue Yin governs Si Tian or Ze Quan (Earth), it should be on the right, hence the right side does not respond; when Tai Yin governs Si Tian or Ze Quan, it should be on the left, hence the left side does not respond. These are based on the theories of Nan Zheng regarding Cun and Chi. If one examines the pulse by turning the hand over, then Yin Qi sinks below, but the deep pulse is mistaken for a floating pulse, and the fine pulse is mistaken for a large pulse. Furthermore, the Classics state: "Death occurs if Cun and Chi pulses are reversed; death occurs if Yin and Yang pulses intersect." First, establish the year to know the Qi. Observe whether the Left and Right responses appear, then one can discuss the reversal or smoothness of life and death. One must diagnose to distinguish the "reversal" and detail the "intersection," thereby grasping the subtleties of life and death.
The Song states:
Earth occupies the South, called the Ruler;
Fire, Metal, Wood, and Water are Ministers in the North.
Yun must respect Damp Earth (starting from Jia and Ji) as the honorable position;
Six Qi still prioritize the discussion of Jun Huo.
The Classics state: "Death occurs if Yin and Yang intersect." This means that when the year's Yang should be on the Left, the pulse appears on the Right; when the year's Yin should be on the Right, the pulse appears on the Left. Intersection of Left and Right pulses is called "Jiao" (Intersection). If only the Left is abnormal, or only the Right is abnormal, this is called "Bu Ying" (Non-response), not "Jiao." This phenomenon occurs only in the eight years of Yin, Shen, Si, Hai, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. The Classics state: "Death occurs if Cun and Chi are reversed." This means that when the year's Yin should be at Cun, the pulse appears at Chi; when the year's Yang should be at Chi, the pulse appears at Cun. Only when both Cun and Chi are reversed is it called "Fan" (Reversal). If only Chi is abnormal, or only Cun is abnormal, this is called "Bu Ying," not "Fan." This phenomenon occurs only in the four years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You.
Generally, when the Qi of Creation changes abnormally, Qi and Blood become disturbed, leading to disease. The Classics state: "First establish the year to know the Qi. Observe the Left and Right responses, then one can discuss the reversal or smoothness of life and death." Taking this as an example, the method applies to other years. Unskilled physicians do not understand this, calling it Cold-Heat patterns. Treating Cold leads to Heat; the pulse remains unchanged, yet the Heat disease arises. Treating Heat leads to Cold; the pulse is like this, yet the Cold disease arises. How can comfort and peace be sought? The causes of premature death and wrongful demise largely stem from this. Whenever San Yin (Three Yin) governs Si Tian or Ze Quan, involving the Upper/Lower and North/South Zheng, either on the Left or Right, the Cun and Chi pulses of both hands sink downward. When they sink downward and do not correspond, examining the hand upside down makes the deep pulse appear floating and the fine pulse appear large.
