Pulse
Yang presents as soggy and weak (Ru Ruo), Yin presents as string-taut and tight (Xian Jin). If further exposed to warm qi, it transforms into Warm Epidemic (Wen Yi). The left hand pulse is larger than the right, floating, slow, and vigorous, but feels powerless upon deep pressure.
Symptoms
When the majority of people suffer from similar illnesses, this is Heavenly Movement Seasonal Epidemic (Tian Xing Shi Yi), a contagious disease spreading through the air. It is entirely caused by the stagnation and eruption of climatic fortune, resulting from the improper transition of seasonal positions (Qian Zheng Tui Wei).
Treatment
If winter should be cold but turns warm, causing Warm Epidemic in spring, Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Decoction for Overcoming Toxins) is the primary formula. If spring should be warm but turns cool, causing Dry Epidemic in summer, Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) is the primary formula. If summer should be hot but turns cold, causing Cold Epidemic in autumn, Wu Ji San (Five Accumulations Powder) is the primary formula. If autumn should be cool but turns rainy, causing Damp Epidemic in winter, Wu Ling San (Five-Ling Powder) is the primary formula. In all cases of Warm Epidemic, one must absolutely not treat it as Tai Yang Disease (Shang Han) and induce severe sweating or purgation. Instead, treatment should follow the "Middle" principle, using herbs from the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) and Yangming (Bright Yang) meridians, such as Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) for Shaoyang and Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Root and Cimicifuga Decoction) for Yangming. Based on whether the pathogen affects Yin or Yang, modify and harmonize these two formulas; this is highly appropriate. Ren Shen Bai Du San treats seasonal Warm Epidemics. Qiang Huo Chong He Tang is generally used for initial contraction of Warm Epidemic; taking it within one or two days to induce sweating yields very rapid results.
Formulas
Whenever entering the home of a patient with Warm Epidemic, applying sesame oil inside the nostrils prevents infection. Upon leaving, inserting a rolled paper wick deep into the nasal cavity to induce sneezing is beneficial.
Another method involves grinding Xiong Huang (Realgar) and Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) into fine powder, mixing with sesame oil, and applying inside the nose. Alternatively, use only Xiong Huang powder mixed with water applied to the nose. Even sleeping in the same bed as the patient will not result in transmission.
Xuan Sheng Bi Wen Dan (Prophet's Plague-Repelling Pill): Collect well-water drawn at dawn on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month (the first bucket of water). Store in a clean vessel. Soak Ru Xiang (Frankincense) according to the number of people until the early morning of the first day of the new year. Warm it slightly. From children to adults, each person swallows a small piece of Frankincense with one or two sips of water, ensuring they will not contract seasonal epidemics for a year.
Shen Sheng Bi Wen Dan (Divine Plague-Repelling Pill) [Note: These above formulas are all preventive agents against plague]
Cang Zhu (as Sovereign herb, doubled in dosage), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Song (Nardostachys Radix et Rhizoma), San Nai (Kaempferiae Rhizoma), Chi Jian (Achyranthes Root), Xiong Huang (Realgar) (all in equal parts).
Grind into powder, bind with wheat paste into pills the size of a bullet, coat with Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide), dry in the sun. On the first day of the first lunar month at dawn, burn one incense stick's worth to repel epidemic pathogens for the year.
Ren Shen Bai Du San: Treats irregular Qi of the four seasons. Winter should be cold but is hot; summer should be hot but is cold; spring should be warm but is cool; autumn should be cool but is warm. When non-seasonal Qi appears, patients of all ages present similarly. Generally, it causes phlegm-saliva congestion, high fever like fire, headache and body pain, stiff neck and painful eyes, hoarseness, and swollen cheeks. Commonly called Lang Zi Wen (Prodigal Son Plague) or Xia Ma Wen (Toad Plague). In cities and villages, households are affected similarly; all should base treatment on this formula adding Gan Ge (Kudzu Root). If there is alternating chills and fever, Xiao Chai Hu Tang must be used. (Both formulas are found under the Shang Han section.)
Jia Wei Chai Hu Tang: Treats conditions complicated by miasma and toxic vapors from mountain streams and valleys. The pathology involves blood attacking the Upper Jiao. Before the illness manifests, it causes confusion and lethargy; severely, it leads to restlessness and madness, or even mutism. This is due to blood stasis attacking the Heart and toxic saliva accumulating in the Stomach.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Cut one dose, decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), take on an empty stomach. For Ya Zhang (Mutism Miasma), take after meals.
Da Li Zi Tang: Treats Da Tou Tian Xing Bing (Great Head Epidemic), characterized by swelling of the cheeks, jaw, and neck, headache, and fever, resembling Shang Han. Also treats Ya Zhang.
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-washed, 2 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-fried, 2 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 1 qian), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, fried and ground), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 qian), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, wine-steamed, 1.5 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba, 3 fen), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 3 fen), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 3 fen), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1.5 qian).
Cut one dose, decoct with Sheng Jiang, and take orally.
Treats seasonal plagues with headache, fever, and uniform symptoms among the populace. (Transmitted by Sun Dun'an) One cup of black sugar, mixed with two cups of ginger juice, dissolved and given to the patient. Immediate relief occurs with sweating after consuming this for chills and high fever.
Er Sheng Jiu Ku Wan (Two Sages' Life-Saving Pills) (Transmitted by Wan Zuochuan): Treats Shang Han and plagues.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 4 liang, wine-steamed), Ya Zao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, 2 liang).
Grind into powder, bind with wheat paste into pills the size of mung beans. Take 40 pills per dose, washed down with mung bean soup. Effect is achieved when profuse sweating occurs.
