A scholar suffered from dry mouth and fever every spring and summer, and headache upon exertion. After taking cooling and phlegm-resolving medicines, he experienced diarrhea, wheezing, and irritability; subsequently, using Xiangru Yin (Mosla Decoction) led to mental confusion and fatigue, with a large and deficient pulse. This condition arose from failing to protect oneself against cold during the season of storage (winter), and is named "Zhu Xia" (Summer Chronic Weakness Syndrome). The physician prescribed Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), removing Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and adding Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Paojiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma). After one dose, the pulse became even more pronounced/severe. The prescription was retained, but Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 5 fen was added; after taking it, the patient immediately recovered consciousness. He was then cured by taking Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia).
Zhang Yugong, a Censor, had red eyes and blurred vision. After taking wind-dispelling and heat-clearing medicines, his photophobia worsened and hearing became impaired, with a large and deficient pulse. This resulted from excessive mental labor and irregular diet. He was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Fuling (Poria), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), and Wuweizi, resulting in immediate recovery. Upon recurrence due to severe physical overexertion, he used Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction) combined with the previous herbs, gradually improving, and finally was cured by using Buzhong Yiqi Tang with the aforementioned additions. Dongyuan [Li Dongyuan] stated: The meridians of all channels travel to the face and open into the sensory orifices. The clear qi scatters into the eyes to form visual essence, and flows into the ears to form hearing. If one is troubled by worry and busy affairs, coupled with dietary irregularities, Spleen and Stomach deficiency occurs, Heart fire becomes excessive, causing the hundred vessels to boil. Pathogenic factors harm the orifices, leading to blindness. Moreover, the Spleen is the head of all yin channels, and the eyes are the gathering place of blood vessels. When the Spleen is deficient, the essential qi of the five zang organs loses its nourishment. If the Spleen and Stomach are not regulated, and qi and blood are not nourished, this treats the branch rather than the root.
Li Puting, a Vice Minister, experienced tinnitus like cicada chirping. After taking Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction), the tinnitus worsened, indicating a syndrome of primordial qi deficiency. He took Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) at wu geng (3–5 AM) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) before meals, resulting in immediate recovery. For this syndrome, if there is blood deficiency with fire, use Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) plus Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix); if there is qi deficiency with fire, use Sijunzi Tang (Four-Gentlemen Decoction) plus Zhizi and Chaihu; if deafness results from anger, use Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleuri Decoction) plus Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome) and Gui (Danggui Radix Sinensis), plus Zhizi; for deficiency, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Zhizi; if symptoms are worse in the morning, use Siwu Tang plus Zhu (Baizhu Rhizoma) and Ling (Fuling); for chronic cases, Buzhong Yiqi Tang is required; if symptoms are worse in the afternoon, use Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill).
Another scholar suffered from pain in both eyes. After taking fire-descending and wind-dispelling medicines, his eyes turned deep red, and he felt extreme heat and fatigue. I administered several doses of Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction), after which all symptoms subsided. He was then cured by taking Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) combined with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). Later, due to physical overexertion, he experienced dry eyes and body fatigue in the afternoon, and was cured by taking Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Agent Great Tonifying Decoction).
