The pulse of all women, in terms of Yin and Yang attributes, is opposite to that of men. The Chi position (Chi position) should be faintly palpable, consistent in both incoming and outgoing movements, harmonious and slow, neither choppy nor wiry, and the Cun position (Cun position) should be level; only then can conception occur. If the Chi position is wiry and urgent, the Liver pulse is active, the Heart pulse is rapid, and the six pulses are choppy and uneven, sterility will result.
When blood is abundant and Qi is deficient, it indicates pregnancy. This is manifested by a Heart pulse that is surging, large, smooth, and slippery, beating with force; the Lung pulse is fine like feathers but slightly floating yet not superficial. This signifies pregnancy. Additionally, there should be a slight gap between the Chi position and the Liver pulse, while the Liver pulse is slightly overflowing horizontally; this confirms pregnancy.
If the Liver pulse is choppy but unbroken, the Chi pulse is slightly depressed, and the Heart pulse is slippery, this indicates pregnancy.
If the Liver pulse is choppy, the Heart pulse is slippery, the Lung pulse is weak resembling a pregnant pulse, and the Chi pulse is urgent and long, this indicates stagnant blood or accumulated blood, not pregnancy.
If the Lung pulse is urgent, wiry, and long, and the Right pulse is floating and short, the lower abdomen feels hard as if pregnant.
If the Lung pulse is urgent and deep, and the Kidney pulse is soft and deep, the lower abdomen has a shape resembling pregnancy.
If the Liver pulse is urgent and deep, and the Kidney pulse is small, urgent, and tight, there is itching in the yin region and pain and swelling in the vagina.
In unmarried girls, all six pulses are wiry and long, and also surging. The Chi pulse is slightly tight. Menstruation flows normally, but the feet are painful and swollen, making walking difficult. Muscles are emaciated, stool is dry and rough, headache occurs, and vision is blurred. For an unmarried girl aged sixteen or seventeen, the Liver pulse is wiry and long, and the Stomach pulse is slightly wiry. The exterior and interior pulses are consistent. There is steaming heat in the bone groove, wind pathogen spreads throughout the body, the Upper Jiao is obstructed, muscles emaciate, suddenly the whole body turns yellow-black, the complexion is dark, urine is yellow and red, the five centers are hot and irritable, gradually progressing toward consumption syndrome.
In women, if the Lung pulse is vigorous, the Liver pulse is soft and deficient, occasionally weak and moving, and the Heart pulse is hollow (Kou), Lung Qi is excessive, leading to mutual restriction. Wood of the Liver is injured by Metal of the Lung, failing to govern blood. Menstruation varies in amount and timing, irregular, leading to infertility. Even if conception occurs, miscarriage happens spontaneously. Treatment should reduce Lung Qi and tonify Liver Qi.
If the Guan and Chi positions are micro-fine and deep, Kidney Qi is deficient and cannot generate Liver Wood. Menstruation varies in amount and timing, resulting in inability to bear children.
If the Liver and Heart pulses are wiry, tight, and rapid, and the Lung pulse is floating and large, with the Chi position appearing congested and unresolved, menstruation is blocked. Stool is constipated and hot, feet are painful and immobile, muscles emaciate, gradually developing into joint deformities similar to "horse basket joints."
If all six pulses are wiry, tight, and long, and the Heart pulse is surging, large, and excess, with the Chi pulse knotted, menstruation is blocked. Long-term stagnation and anger cause unrest, mental confusion resembling mania, insomnia, red urine, normal stool, but sudden passage of duck-like loose stools.
If the Liver pulse is deficient, wiry, and long, lacking bony strength upon pressure, and the Heart pulse is active and rapid, Liver pathogen transmits to the Heart. Day and night irritability occurs, suddenly resembling mania, unable to sleep. All six pulses are large and deep. The Liver pulse overflows horizontally, and the Lung pulse floats. This governs women's blood heat, scanty menstruation, intermittent fever on the back, dry mouth, irregular menstruation cycles (every two-three months or half a year), or passage of small amounts of dark blood.
If all six pulses are large and deep, requiring heavy pressure to faintly detect, feeling absent with light pressure but possessing bony strength with heavy pressure—distinct from ordinary deep/obscure pulses—this is due to inherent heat in the uterus. Sudden consumption of cold foods after childbirth within one hundred days causes cold-heat entrapment. After two or three years of amenorrhea, it resembles pregnancy with accumulated evil blood. A mass may appear below, hard and immobile, often causing qi pain. Treatment requires acrid-warm herbs to disperse, allowing natural discharge without need for purgation.
A woman's pulse resembling pregnancy, with the Chi pulse also seemingly absent (in specific context), indistinguishable from pregnancy, but the six pulses move unevenly, and the Stomach pulse is lightly hidden. This results from injury during menstruation or rising early postpartum, combined with ingestion of raw/cold foods damaging Qi and Blood. Long-standing accumulation transforms into evil matter, forming abdominal masses resembling snakes, rats, deer, or tigers. Pressing them causes jumping sensations. In chronic cases, these evil matters consume blood until menstruation ceases completely or becomes watery. This is a critical condition. Rapid, large, deficient, and urgent pulses indicate Wind (rapid/large), floating blood overflow, and Cold at the Chi position (urgent). Caused by eating inappropriate cold foods postpartum or catching wind upon rising early, damaging Qi and Blood. Pre-menstrual symptoms include sudden qi pain or acute lower abdominal pain.
If the Heart pulse is hollow, the Liver pulse is deficient, and the Chi pulse is micro-fine, the Sea of Blood is damaged. Menstruation is excessive, flowing down in clumps uncontrollably. All six pulses are deep. The Liver pulse is weak and deficient. The Chi pulse is thread-like, choppy, and slow. Liver and Kidney are affected by Cold, latent in the uterus. The Sea of Blood is damaged, menstruation excessive, urine white and turbid like rice washings. The Shaoyin Kidney meridian runs along the spine and back; sudden coldness in patches leads to vomiting clear fluid.
If all six pulses are rapid, large, and floating, the Kidney pulse is urgent and floating, and the Heart pulse is slightly surging, this indicates blood-wind headache, dry mouth, and expectoration of phlegm.
If all six pulses are wiry and large, the Liver and Heart pulses are choppy and short, and the Chi pulse is urgent, deep, and pounding, caused by habitual frustration and anger injuring the righteous Qi of Liver and Heart. Phlegm accumulates, Qi rebels upward with anger, carrying phlegm up. Symptoms include dizziness and oppression in the precordial region, confusion, and discomfort. A mass rises to the throat, causing cold hands and feet, locked jaw, unconsciousness.
If all six pulses are wiry, large, and rapid, and the Chi pulse is wiry and moving, continuously undulating, with menstruation excessive and lasting seven to eight months, passing fresh blood. This is not deficiency requiring tonification, but rather cooling wind-blood is indicated, as wind is strong and blood scatters. However, prolonged bleeding leads to Liver Qi depletion and blood loss.
In pregnancy, if the Lung pulse is slight but floating and gathered at the Cun position, upper body asthma and panting should occur.
In pregnancy, although all six pulses should be slippery and smooth, if the Liver pulse is slippery, surging, and large, and the Stomach pulse has bony strength, upper asthma and sticky mouth with increased appetite occur. Cold in the upper jiao causes downward prolapse.
In pregnancy, if the Chi pulse is urgent, deep, and pounding, the Stomach pulse is soft and heavy, and all six pulses are soft, fetal Qi descends, and the vulva swells.
In pregnancy, if all six pulses are rapid and moving, and the Liver pulse is long and scattered, it indicates fetal leakage and bleeding. Tonification is contraindicated; this is blood overflow. One should calm the fetus and cool the blood.
In pregnancy, if the Chi position is deep and hidden, the Lung pulse is solid, deep, and moving, there is lower back pain preventing lifting, heavy hands, weakness in walking, and intestinal pain during sleep.
In pregnancy, if the Heart pulse is surging, large, and floating, the Lung pulse is floating and scattered, and the Stomach pulse is floating and large, the whole body itches, gradually swelling face, eyes, and body, with heart restlessness and anxiety.
In pregnancy, if all six pulses are knotted and hidden, and the Stomach pulse is deep and moving, it indicates sudden onset resembling stroke, dizziness and oppression in the precordial region, sensation of a mass blocking. This arises from inherent internal heat suddenly contracting cold or consuming raw/cold foods, causing cold-heat entrapment. Treat with acrid-warm dispersants.
In pregnancy, if all six pulses are surging and large, overflowing past the Guan to the Cun, it indicates heat in the Upper Diaphragm. Lips and mouth are dry and scorched, sores form on lips and tongue, non-timed headaches and unrest, yellow-red urine.
In pregnancy, if blood is in excess, all six pulses are large and rapid, tight and smooth, with bony strength in both exterior and interior, it indicates generalized sharp pains and unbearable abdominal pain. Cool the blood.
In pregnant women, fever resembling malaria, aversion to wind even in summer, indicates Liver excess and blood heat, wind pathogen spreading to the exterior. Extreme heat generates cold. If Liver is excess and Stomach deficient, chills dominate the right side. This is because pregnancy causes blood abundance and Qi deficiency. Pulse diagnosis: Left side long and tight, slightly floating; Right Guan deep and soft, like pressing mud.
In women, if all six pulses are deep, fine, and urgent, the Left Chi position is micro and tight, feeling thread-like and turning, connecting to the Liver pulse, knotting and scattering upon pressure, this indicates insufficient uterine essence. Chronic stagnant blood and leukorrhea (red and white discharge) are present. If the pulse moves rapidly and is short, death is imminent.
In women, if all pulses are deep and surging-large, requiring heavy pressure to reach the bone, faintly responding with bony strength, coming rapidly and departing slowly, frequency normal, but the Stomach pulse is also surging-large, indicating latent phlegm in the Upper Diaphragm. This is blood stasis generating accumulation. Menstruation becomes irregular or stops, lumbar bi-syndrome occurs, dry mouth and thirst, bursting sensation in back, eyes, arms, and clavicular fossa, constipation, heart aversion, and insomnia.
