Due to excessive labor and exertion, Yang Qi (Yang Energy) is depleted. Pain in the chest and epigastrium occurs, which naturally relieves after eating. This indicates that it is not caused by physical stagnation or accumulation of pathological products. However, initially, Qi was damaged, and prolonged diarrhea has also injured the Ying (Nutritive) collaterals. As the ancients said, "When collaterals are deficient, pain arises." Using methods to attack phlegm and break Qi will not remove the disease but will instead damage the Stomach, leading to poor appetite, belching, and a desire to vomit. This clearly shows the failure of Stomach Yang. A formula with pungent, sweet, and warm properties should be used.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger), Nan Zao (Southern Jujube).
A chronic disease lasting several years must reside in the collaterals. The pain is not merely a deficiency syndrome; due to the prolonged course, the constitution's Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is depleted. When encountering unsuitable food or emotional depression and agitation, Phlegm generates due to Qi stagnation, and Qi obstruction leads to Blood stasis. Various meridians become chaotic, resulting in frequent vomiting of turbid substances, while stool becomes constipated. Physicians seeing cold limbs mistake this for collapse and use Li Zhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Decoction) with Fu Zi (Aconite Root) to warm the interior and protect Yang. However, Yang Qi belongs to formless Qi. Given the specific cause of the onset, it is certainly not Yang deficiency with impending collapse. Recalling the illness back then, it resembled a Liver disorder. Methods that unblock Qi and Blood were all effective. The reason for incomplete recovery lies mostly in temperament and diet. In summer, a general regulator for Tai Yin (Taiyin Spleen/Stomach) and Yang Ming (Yangming Large Intestine/Stomach) channels was specifically used. Now that the pain is located in the epigastrium, and turbidity re-accumulates over time, light and bland flavors for clearing nourishment are suitable. On the third day, Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) pills were taken and continued. In the morning, a separate method to unblock stasis was established.
Su Mu (Sappanwood), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Yu Jin (Turmeric Tuber), Tao Ren (Peach Seed), Gui Wei (Angelica Sinensis Root Tail), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed), Hu Po (Amber), Chong Wei Cao (Euphrasia Herb), Hong Zao Rou (Red Date Flesh) made into pills.
Chronic Qi-rebellious stomach pain. After a full meal and anger today, pain erupted with vomiting. This is Wood of the Liver invading Earth of the Stomach, with turbid Qi occupying upwards, causing unremitting distending pain and chaotic Qi rebellion, evolving into initial chills followed by fever, irritability, red face, and sweating. This is the manifestation of Jue Syndrome (Revulsion Syndrome), clearly showing symptoms of the Jue Yin Liver. "Pain implies obstruction"; understanding "unblocking" requires investigating Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang—this is the key principle of diagnosis. It is proposed to use the Xie Xin Fa (Draining Heart Method).

Stomach pain lasting long and recurring frequently must involve condensed Phlegm and accumulated Blood stasis. In the elderly, with declining Qi, attacks worsen daily, representing the irreconcilable conflict between Pathogenic factors and Healthy Qi. Currently, much is vomited after eating, with an sour and bitter taste. The pulse is large on the left and small on the right. Likely, Liver Wood invades Stomach Earth; Stomach Yang is deficient, leading to undigested food passing through. Moreover, hiccups are not relieved by hot soup; Stomach Qi churns like boiling water, rejecting soups/drinks, with turbid fluids lingering at the bottom of the stomach. The principle of medication is to avoid softness and use rigidity. Jiayan (Xu Dacun) stated one can change the Stomach without being changed by it, opening the upper gate, then discussing treatment.
Zi Jin Dan (Purple Gold Pill).
Three years postpartum, menstruation has not returned. Stomach pain, vomiting immediately after eating, sweating, aversion to cold, flickering sensation of moving Qi on the left side of the waist, bowel movements only every seven to eight days. Pulse is fine and wiry, rough on the right. Tongue coating is white, slightly thirsty. Noises in the epigastrium, pain eases when descending. The disease belongs to Jue Yin, following Yang Ming. Stomach Earth has been injured for a long time, making Liver Wood more rampant. The method should employ pungent and sour flavors to harmonize the substance and function of Jue Yin. Reference should also be made to unblocking and tonifying Yang of Yang Ming, so that turbid Qi ascends less, allowing pain to have periods of relief.

Tian Gui (Menstrual Essence) should have ceased but returned. Dizziness existed since young adulthood. Since autumn seven years ago, stomach pain felt like burning/empty hunger. In spring this year, due to grief, numbness and dizziness occurred first, with pain erupting in the lower body, cold knees and shins for three days. The disease is Liver Jue with stomach pain. Describing pain radiating to the back and hypochondrium indicates that long-term illness has created gaps in collaterals. Jue Yang heat qi, due to emotional depression and frustration, attacks collaterals, stirring internal wind, attacking Yang Ming, causing vomiting and inability to eat.
Jiu Kong Shi Jue Ming (Nine-hole Halitosis Shell), Qing E Jiao (Clear Donkey-hide Gelatin), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry), Fu Ling (Poria), Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus Branch), Chuan Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem).
Pain wanders in the hypochondrium and ribs, gradually leading to profuse phlegm and weak hands and feet. For the first two years of illness, sleep and appetite were normal. Since entering summer this year, the condition worsened. This is not a Zang-Fu organ disease but originates from the Meridians, subsequently affecting Collaterals. Generally, Meridians govern Qi and Collaterals govern Blood. Long-term illness leads to Blood stasis, with stasis exiting via stool. Various physicians do not distinguish between meridians and collaterals, merely treating alternating chills and fever, hence ineffectiveness. Trying the Xin Jiang (New Crimson Silk) formula yielded slight effect. This is a formula for collaterals. It is proposed to unblock the collaterals of Shaoyang and Yang Ming. Unblocking leads to no pain.

Pulse is beating and deficient, small and weak on the left. Left hypochondriac pain, radiating upward, slightly relieved by eating. All this results from excessive mental exertion, injuring Ying (Nutritive) collaterals. The Yang of the Five Emotions agitates incessantly, causing dry throat, dry tongue, palpitations, and long-term pain, depleting Body Fluids. Although the syndrome is indeed deficiency, formulas containing Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), and Dang Gui (Angelica) fail to treat collateral diseases. The *Neijing* states there are only three methods for Liver diseases: Pungent dispersion to regulate the Liver, Sour drainage to moisten the Liver, and Sweet moderation to benefit the Liver. One should use pungent, sweet, moistening, and warming tonification. Since the Liver is a rigid organ, it must be aided by softness to achieve efficacy.
Chao Tao Ren (Stir-fried Peach Seed), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed), Xin Jiang (New Crimson Silk), Gui Wei (Angelica Sinensis Root Tail), Ju Hong (Tangerine Peel), Hu Po (Amber).
Ancients had five methods for treating hypochondriac pain: either Cold invasion causing blood stagnation, Blood deficiency causing collateral pain, Blood adhesion causing obstruction, Liver Fire depression, or sudden anger causing Qi rebellion—all can cause pain. Current symptoms show a fine, wiry, rapid, and uncomfortable pulse. This is due to Liver Fire depression; fire depression causes collaterals to dry. Treatment must clear heat, moisten, and unblock collaterals.

Inquiring about slight pain in the left hypochondrium daily exceeding a certain duration, radiating to the chest, epigastrium, and back, never extending to the abdomen or lower jiao. This is a disease of the Fu collaterals. Long-term illnesses are often treated from the Blood aspect. Since it currently affects the upper part, it remains an obstruction in the Qi aspect, leading to condensation of fluid retention and turbid stasis. This is obviously not indicated for middle-tonifying agents. However, attacking methods must use pills to act slowly, unlike sudden attacks on acute pathogens. A steady method should be used. It is proposed to use methods for Yang Ming and Shaoyang, allowing the pivot mechanism to open and close smoothly, which will surely be beneficial.
Sheng Gou Teng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis), Sheng Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Feng Hua Xiao (Weathered Niter), Chao Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum), Fu Ling (Poria), Sheng Bai Ji Li (Tribulus Fructus), Zhu Li Jiang Zhi Fan Wan (Bamboo Sap and Ginger Juice Pill).
Right pulse is wiry, left is small, weak, and rough. The illness began with accumulated fatigue injuring Yang, mental strain and worry, causing rebellion of the Five Emotions. The Liver is the General, where strategy originates, hence hypochondriac pain first. In the late afternoon, Yang does not function, and the condition worsens. This is an internal injury syndrome, due to insufficiency of Root Qi. Daily ingestion of pungent and drying drugs causes Qi leakage and Blood consumption. Liu Wei (Six-Ingredient Pill) and other moist, rich, cloying medicines are originally not pain-relieving formulas but merely correct previous errors. The *Neijing* Liver disease three methods also advocate sweet moderation for deficiency. Since the disease is long-standing, it must affect the Yang Ming Stomach collaterals, gradually shifting to the right, involving both Liver and Stomach. When sleeping, the Hun (Ethereal Soul) resides in the Liver, causing chaotic dreams, injuring formless Qi. It is proposed to use sweet medicines, slightly assisting with anchoring and calming agents.

Urination is free, stool is black, abdominal pain at the umbilicus, developing gradually over fifteen years. Pulse is deep, knotted, and rough. This is depression injuring the collaterals of the Liver and Spleen, leading to blood decomposition and stasis retention. Labor and anger trigger the chronic condition. In deep winter, storage is closed; purgatives are contraindicated. It is proposed to use pungent unblocking and blood-moistening methods. As stated, unblocking leads to no pain.
Tao Ren (Peach Seed), Gui Zhi Mu (Cinnamon Twig Wood), Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scale), Lao Xie Bai (Allium Macrostemon Bulb), A Wei Wan (Asafoetida Pill).
Abdominal pain for three years, intermittent, with a bright complexion. This is fluid pathogen and damp-heat from alcohol brewing. Anger caused a tangible pain in the left hypochondrium wrapping around the abdomen and various acupoints on the chest and back. This is empty collaterals where fluid Qi rebels and attacks the collaterals. Eating spicy and hot foods stops pain temporarily, then it returns. Anger causes Liver function to be depressed/fractured; only pungent and spicy aromas can resolve it. In discussing herbs, aroma and flavor must be prioritized.

Pulse is small and rough, long-term melancholy, epigastric pain radiating to back and hypochondrium, disease enters Blood collaterals, lingering for years. Additionally, vegetarian diet for several years has led to Yang Ming deficiency, inability to raise shoulders and arms, difficult to achieve quick effects. Slow regulation is appropriate. It is proposed to unblock Blood collaterals and moisten tonify, avoiding drying and heating drugs that consume fluids.
