Wang, aged fifty-six. On the eighth day of the third month in the Guihai year, he initially suffered from Hou Bi (sore throat with swelling and obstruction). Injury caused by purgative medicines led to the formation of Fei Yong (lung abscess). He experienced chest pain, dryness in the mouth, and the sore throat had not yet healed; he was unable to eat or sleep. The sputum had a fishy and foul odor, indicating that pus had already formed. The pulse was short and rapid, accompanied by alternating chills and fever. Heat transferred to the Large Intestine causing diarrhea, making it a difficult-to-cure syndrome. Reluctantly, an urgent method to lift Lung Qi was adopted. It was proposed to use Qianjin Weijing Tang (Decoction for the Thousand Gold Standard) combined with Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction).
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang), Taoren (Peach Seed, 5 qian), Dongguaren (Winter Melon Seed, 5 qian), Yiren (Coix Seed, 1 liang), Xianweigen (Fresh Reed Rhizome, 4 liang).
Boil in eight bowls of water until three bowls remain. A second decoction yields one bowl. Divide into four doses for administration.
My cousin on the father's side drank strong liquor and sat on a heated kang bed, suffering from insomnia day and night and prone to sweating. Mistakenly taking Luoliye (Loquat Leaf) and Mahuang (Ephedra) etc., which promote lung function, damaged his body fluids, leading to Fei Yong (lung abscess). The odor was unbearable, and he vomited approximately two sheng of pus daily. Treated with Qianjin Weijing Tang (Decoction for the Thousand Gold Standard) combined with Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction).
Lugen (Reed Rhizome, 8 liang), Yiren (Coix Seed, 2 liang), Taoren (Peach Seed, 1.5 liang), Dongguaren (Winter Melon Seed, 1.5 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, 3 liang), Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root, 1 liang).
Decocted into two large tea bowls. Consuming more than one and a half bowls over day and night resulted in the discharge of seventy to eighty percent of the pus. After finishing the entire dose, eighty to ninety percent of the pus was discharged. Taking another half dose eliminated all foul odor. The case was concluded by regulating the Spleen and Stomach.
Zhu Yongqi, over fifty years old. In early February of the Jimao year, he contracted Wind. One dose of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) resolved the wind pathogen, but he became timid and afraid to remove thick clothing, resulting in excessive sweating. On the fourth or fifth day, he contracted Wind-Warmth again. He felt thirsty for cool liquids, and his pulse was surging and rapid. Initially treated with a mild acrid-cool formula without effect; the pulse became larger, sweating increased, thirst worsened, and body heat intensified. Therefore, a heavy acrid-cold formula containing Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) was given. His body cooled, thirst stopped, and the pulse calmed, yet he remained timid and kept thick clothes on. On the tenth day, when the condition should have improved significantly, upon waking at dawn (wugeng time), he wore even thicker clothes and dared not remove his fur coat during travel, leading to severe depletion of body fluids and the formation of Fei Yong (lung abscess). He was prescribed Weijing Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction), two to three liang per dose. After five to seven days of administration, there was no response; pus had formed with extreme foulness. Wuli (Perilla Fruit) and Tinglizi (Descurainia Seed) were added, five qian each. Pus began to recede but did not completely clear. Ten days later, it relapsed; pus reformed, and he vomited fluid resembling mung bean soup, thick and foul, exceeding one bowl per episode. Tinglizi (Descurainia Seed) was added, three qian, to the previous formula. After two doses, he stabilized. The case was concluded by tonifying the Stomach and expelling phlegm-fluid retention. Furthermore, this person had white skin and a fat physique, with a history of phlegm-fluid retention. In the autumn and winter of the year prior to illness, while serving in the Imperial Study, fearing cold in the morning, he mistakenly consumed folk medicinal wine recipes. Although he did not normally drink alcohol, he forced himself to drink several small cups every morning. This was the cause of his illness the following year.
