Duck-bill alum (Ya Zui Dan Fan) is ground into an extremely fine powder, mixed with strong vinegar (Yan Cu), and administered orally. Once the gelatinous phlegm (Jiao Tan) is vomited out, the condition will be cured.
Dyed safflower (Hong Hua) is crushed to extract juice; one small sheng (a traditional unit of volume) is taken orally. If dried flowers are used, they should be soaked to extract the juice before administration.
Bai Fan (Alumen, 5 qian) and Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, 3 seeds, husked).
Place Bai Fan in a small pot (Diao) and slowly heat it over low fire until it melts into water. Add Ba Dou into the mixture and wait until it dries. Remove Ba Dou, take the remaining Bai Fan, and grind it into powder. Use a small amount of this powder and insufflate it into the throat; stubborn phlegm will be expelled immediately, and the condition will be cured.
Yan Wo Tu (Swallow's Nest Soil) and Xiong Huang (Realgar, equal parts).
Grind them together into a fine powder. Mix with Duihua liquor (Shaojiu) and apply externally to both sides of the throat outside. The condition will be cured.
Zhu Ya Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus, 1 liang, skin and strings removed).
Grind into a fine powder. Decoct with two zhong of water until reduced to half a zhong, add one spoonful of honey, mix well, and administer orally to induce vomiting of phlegm. This method is verified effective. If the jaw is tightly clenched (Ya Guan Jin Ji), wrap Ba Dou in paper and grind to extract Ba Dou oil. Discard the Ba Dou residue, roll the paper into a taper, ignite it, blow it out, and use the smoke to fumigate both nostrils until the patient regains consciousness.
Take spiders from walls and remove their white nests (Zhu Wo). Take one hair from the back of the patient's head, tie it around the spider nest, pick up the nest with a silver hairpin, burn it until it retains its medicinal property (Cun Xing), and grind it into powder. Insufflate this powder into the affected area for immediate resolution. Spiders with patterns are toxic and must not be used.
Ru E (Milk Swallow / Tonsillar Abscess) is an acute condition. This prescription is very effective. Those with means should prepare it in advance to save others. On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month (La Yue Ba Ri), take one male pig gallbladder and fill it with Bai Fan powder.
After air-drying, grind it into powder again and put it back into the pig gallbladder from the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. Repeat this process three or four times. When encountering a patient, insufflate one or two fen of the powder into the throat for an immediate cure; this is miraculous and verified.
For any bilateral or unilateral Ru E: if there are two purple blisters on the top of the throat, it is called Bilateral Ru E (Shuang E); if there is one purple blister, it is called Unilateral Ru E (Dan E). First, puncture the blisters with a silver hairpin and squeeze out the purple blood, which will slightly reduce the severity of the swelling. If no purple blisters are visible, it is called Hidden Ru E (Yin E). First, dip goose feather (E Ling) in tung oil (Tong You) and twist it under the root of the tongue to extract phlegm and saliva. Stop when the smell of tung oil can be detected in the nose. Then, crush Malan Tou Cao (Kalimeris Indica Herb) to extract juice, mix with good vinegar, and gargle several times until cured. In winter, when Malan Tou Cao is unavailable, use Shan Dou Gen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), decoct it into a very concentrated liquid, and gargle with vinegar; this is also effective.
