It is stated that humans live between heaven and earth, inheriting Qi (vital energy) from Yin and Yang. When Qi is harmonious, the body is at peace; when Qi is disharmonious, disease occurs. Therefore, within a year, if the solar terms are not in harmony and the climate of cold and heat deviates from the normal pattern, these all constitute the pathogenic factors of Yi Li (epidemic diseases). When the human body contracts these pathogens and becomes ill, it is named Yi Li. Its symptoms are generally similar regardless of age or seniority. In common parlance, it is also called "Tian Xing" (Heavenly Transmission). These illnesses are similar to seasonal warm-heat diseases. Treatment should be tailored to each specific syndrome using appropriate prescriptions.
For treating Yi Li disease presenting with headache, high fever, aversion to cold that does not resolve, use Shen Ming Bai San Formula.
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, chopped and stir-fried, 2 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, removed seedlings and leaves, 1 liang each), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, cracked by frying, skin and umbilicus removed, 2 liang), Wutou (Aconiti Radix, cracked by frying, skin and umbilicus removed, 4 liang).
The above five herbs are crushed, sifted into a powder, and stored in a silk bag to be worn around the waist. People living in villages will remain healthy. For those already suffering from Yi Li, take one Fang Cun Bi (a measure approx. 2-3 grams) of the powder with warm wine. Cover with blankets to induce sweating, or until vomiting occurs, which indicates recovery. If three to four days have passed, take three Qian Bi (approx. 5-9 grams) of the powder, add two Zhan (approx. 400ml) of water, decoct to one and a half Zhan, remove dregs, and divide into three warm doses.
For treating Shi Xing Yi Li (seasonal epidemic) presenting with high fever, cough, headache, and chest oppression, use Qian Hu Tang Formula.
