Discussion states: Spring is warm, summer is hot, autumn is cool, and winter is cold; these are the normal climates of the four seasons. If abnormal climate occurs out of season, and people contract this pathogenic factor, regardless of age, the resulting diseases present with similar symptoms. This is referred to as "Shi Qi" (Seasonal Epidemic Pathogen). For instance, spring should be warm but turns cold; summer should be hot but turns cold; autumn should be cool but turns hot; winter should be cold but turns warm—all these cases fall under this category. The clinical manifestations resemble those of Shang Han (Cold Damage) and Wen Bing (Warm Diseases), but for syndromes treatable by sweating or purging methods, the therapeutic intensity should be milder compared to Shang Han and Wen Bing.
For Shi Qi persisting for two to three days without resolution, presenting with headache, high fever, and aversion to cold, use Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction):
Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed, 1 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 2 liang), Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Vetus, soaked in water, white pith removed, dried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, sliced).
The above seven ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi (approx. 9-15g depending on era/measure). Add one zhan (approx. 200ml) of water and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm.
For Shi Qi causing headache and high fever, use Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction):
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 2 liang), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, stems removed, 1 liang), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed, 0.5 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi. Add 1.5 zhan of water and a piece of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) the size of a date (crushed). Decoct until reduced to 80%, strain, and take warm. Time is not restricted.
For Shi Qi causing high fever, headache, and vomiting/reversal of qi, use Qianhu Tang (Peucedani Decoction):
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, dried), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved into flakes), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 liang each), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 2 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 5 qianbi. Add 1.5 zhan of water, half a portion of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, crushed), and 2 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, cut). Decoct until reduced to 80%, strain, and take warm.
For Shi Qi causing headache, high fever, and irritative pain in limbs, use Qisheng Tang (Seven Sages Decoction):
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 3 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, fried, 2 liang), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, washed with hot water, white pith removed, dried), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, crushed, 1 liang each), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, fried, 1.5 liang), Shanyinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed, 2 liang).
The above seven ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi. Add one zhan of water and 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take warm.
For Shi Qi causing whole-body pain and unremitting high fever, use Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction):
Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Chifuling (Poria cum Risus, black skin removed), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, crushed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw, crushed, 1 liang each), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 1.5 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi. Add one zhan of water, a small amount of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and Yanchi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum). Decoct until reduced to 60%, strain, and take warm.
For Shi Qi occurring within one to two days, presenting with headache, high fever, and mental restlessness, use Bashen Tang (Eight Spirits Decoction):
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced and dried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, crushed), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed and fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shanzhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 0.5 liang each), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica, 1 fen each).
The above eight ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi. Add one zhan of water, 3 leaves of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), 1 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), and 2 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until reduced to 60%, strain, and take hot.
For Seasonal Epidemic Pathogens lasting one to three days, presenting with headache, high fever, and mental restlessness, use Chaihu Tang (Bupleuri Decoction):
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, stems removed), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 1 liang each), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 0.5 liang each).
The above four ingredients are coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi. Add one zhan of water, 30 grains of Chi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), and 2 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus). Decoct until reduced to 60%, strain, and take hot. Take three doses; efficacy is indicated by sweating, time is not restricted.
For Seasonal Epidemic Pathogens causing body heat, headache, and soreness/pain in four limbs, use Shanyinchen San (Artemisia Scoparia Powder):
Shanyinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 4 liang), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked overnight in rice wash water, skin removed, sliced, fried, 3 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried, 1 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are pounded and sieved into a powder. Each dose consists of 2 qianbi, taken with hot Congcha (Scallion Tea). Take three consecutive doses, cover with clothing to induce sweating.
For Seasonal Epidemic Pathogens causing aversion to cold with high fever, irritative bone/joint pain, and neck stiffness, use Mahuang Nongpo Tang (Ephedra and Magnolia Bark Decoction):
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, 1 jin), Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, rough bark removed, crushed, 0.5 jin), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, crushed), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed, 4 liang each).
The above four ingredients are used raw, coarsely pounded and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi. Add one zhan of water, 3 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), 2 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), and 20 grains of Chi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum). Decoct until reduced to 70%, strain, and take hot. Take three consecutive doses; immediate cure upon sweating.
For Shi Qi causing dizziness/headache, long-standing accumulation of heat-toxin, and bleeding from nose/mouth, use Qingliang San (Cooling Powder):
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, boiled to remove foam, dried), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 1 liang each).
The above three ingredients are pounded and sieved into a fine powder. Each dose consists of 1 qianbi, taken with sugar and cold water after meals.
For Seasonal Epidemic Pathogens where exterior syndrome remains unresolved, presenting with high fever and aversion to cold, use Renshen Gange Tang (Ginseng and Kudzu Decoction):
