Figure of the Wuwu Year's Qi and Yun
Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire) governs the Si Tian (Heavenly Command), Yangming Zaojin (Dryness Metal) governs the Zai Quan (Earthly Command), and the central Yun is Tai Zheng Huoyun (Excessive Fire Movement). The year's fire is excessive, and its qi transformation operates ahead of time. The excess matches the heavenly transformation, which is called "Tian Fu" (Heavenly符). Furthermore, the fire Yun arrives at the Wu position (Wu corresponds to Fire), which is called "Sui Hui" (Year Meeting), indicating a balanced qi state. Seeing Tian Fu above and Sui Hui below, the three combine in governance; this is the gathering of "Tai Yi Tian Fu" (Great One Heavenly符), representing the utmost balance. In years of balanced fire, it is named "Sheng Ming Zhi Ji" (The Epoch of Ascending Brightness). Correct yang governs, virtue is universally applied, the five transformations are balanced. Its qi is high, its nature is swift, its function is like burning and scorching, its transformation is luxuriant, its administration is bright and shining, its climate is hot and summer-like, its command is heat, its category is fire, its correspondence is summer, its grain is wheat, its fruit is apricot, its substance has veins, its insect class is feathered, its animal is horse, its color is red, its taste is bitter, its object is vessels/pulse, its note is Zhi, its number is seven. In humans, its zang organ is the Heart, it governs the tongue, it nourishes blood, and its disease is convulsions/spasms. This is the transformation of the year's Yun.
Shaoyin is above; on the left is Taiyin, on the right is Jueyin. Thus, the qi distributed by the Heavenly Command is bright. Yangming is below; on the left is Taiyang, on the right is Shaoyang. Thus, the earthly qi is solemn and its command is sharp. Cold meets heat, heat adds to dryness. Clouds rush to the rain mansion, dampness transformation proceeds, seasonal rains descend. Metal and Fire combine their virtues, corresponding above to Yinghuo (Mars/Fire Star) and Taibai (Venus/Metal Star). The grains are red and white. Heat transformation number is seven, Clearness transformation number is nine; these are the degrees of correct transformation. Feathered creatures are quiet, shelled creatures breed; this is suitable for the year's produce. Hairy creatures diminish, damp toxins do not arise; this is because earthly qi restrains them. Water, fire, cold, and heat hold sway at the qi intersection, and diseases begin here. Heat diseases arise from above, clear/cold diseases arise from below, cold and heat contend in the middle. People suffer from cough and wheezing, hematemesis/hematochezia, nasal congestion, sneezing, red eyes and sores, cold reversal entering the stomach, heart pain, lower back pain, abdominal distension, dry and swollen throat extending upward. Because year-fire is above, metal is below, and fire is in the middle, fire overcomes metal, and heavenly qi is full. Although heavenly qi is generally balanced, heat is severe above. It is advisable to select the source of transformation twelve months before the year begins, to level the fire qi, suppress the excessive fire Yun, support the year's overcoming qi (Metal), and break the stagnant qi of Metal, preventing excessive violence that causes disease. Eat red and white grains to preserve true qi; eat inter-quarter grains to ward off empty evils. For the year, use salty flavors to drain the upper part and sour flavors to astringe and settle the lower part. Since the Yun matches the heavenly qi, use cold and clearing transformations. Thus, it is said: the transformation above should be salty-cold, in the middle sweet-cold, and below sour-warm. This is appropriate for medicines and foods.
Before the midpoint of the year, Shaoyin governs. Shaoyin has the transformation of Ben (Root) and Biao (Branch); when cold and heat are balanced, it is the peace of the Heavenly Command. After the midpoint of the year, Yangming governs. Yangming transforms via its Zhong Qi (Middle Qi); when dryness and dampness are half-and-half, it is the command of the Earth.
First Qi: From Shen hour on the day of Da Han (Major Cold) in Ding Si year to Wu hour on the day of Chun Fen (Spring Equinox) of this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Host Position is Shao Jiao Wood, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, with Central Fire Yun. Water overcomes Fire, earthly qi shifts, dryness departs, cold begins. Hibernating creatures hide again, water freezes, frost descends, wind arrives, yang qi stagnates. People become tightly closed up, joints become stiff and fixed, waist and back hurt. As summer heat rises, sores and ulcers appear inside and outside. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Taiyang: tonify with bitter, drain with salty, firm with bitter, moisten with pungent. Year grain should be red, inter-grain should be Ji (Millet), so cold does not become evil.
Second Qi: From Wu hour on the day of Chun Fen to Chen hour on the day of Xiao Man (Grain Full), totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Tai Zheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, with Central Fire Yun. Wood and Fire generate each other, yang qi spreads, wind moves, spring qi is correct, all things respond with prosperity. Cold qi arrives at times, people harmonize. Diseases include strangury, eye closure or redness, qi stagnation above causing heat. Regulate the Guest Qi of Jueyin: tonify with pungent, drain with sour, soothe with sweet. Year grain should be red, inter-grain should be rice, so wind does not become evil.
Third Qi: From Si hour on the day of Xiao Man to Mao hour on the day of Da Shu (Major Heat), totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Tai Zheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, with Central Fire Yun. Qi matches Yun, Heavenly Command spreads, great fire moves, myriad species flourish and freshen. Cold qi arrives at times. People suffer from qi reversal and heart pain, alternating cold and heat, cough and wheezing, red eyes. Regulate the Guest Qi of Shaoyin: tonify with salty, drain with sweet, astringe with sour. Year grain should be red, inter-grain should be beans, so heat does not become evil.
Fourth Qi: From Mao hour on the day of Da Shu to Chou hour on the day of Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox), totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Shao Gong Earth, the Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, with Central Fire Yun. Earth occupies its position, fire transformation accompanies it. Muggy heat arrives, heavy rains occur frequently, cold and heat alternate. People suffer from cold and heat, dry throat, jaundice, nasal congestion, epistaxis, fluid retention and vomiting. Regulate the Guest Qi of Taiyin: tonify with sweet, drain with bitter, soothe with sweet. Year grain should be white, inter-grain should be hemp seed, so dampness does not become evil.
Fifth Qi: From Yin hour on the day of Qiu Fen to Zi hour on the day of Xiao Xue (Minor Snow), totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Tai Shang Metal, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, with Central Fire Yun. Qi and Yun transform together. Feared Fire arrives, summer heat returns, yang transforms, all things grow and flourish, people are healthy. Disease is warm disease. Regulate the Guest Qi of Shaoyang: tonify with salty, drain with sweet, soften/draining with salty [Note: Original text missing character, inferred contextually]. Year grain should be white, inter-grain should be beans, so fire does not become evil. Regarding this Qi, avoid using hot remedies during hot periods; do not violate the heat of the Si Qi.
Sixth Qi (Final Qi): From Zi hour on the day of Xiao Xue to Xu hour on the day of Da Han (Major Cold), totaling over 60 days. The Host Position is Shao Yu Water, the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, with Central Fire Yun. Fire overcomes Metal, Water counter-restrains it. Dryness command acts, residual fire is internally blocked, swelling occurs above with cough and wheezing, severe cases involve hematemesis. Cold qi frequently arises, causing foggy vision. Diseases arise in skin and pores, internal residence in hypochondrium, connecting downward to lower abdomen causing cold-middle syndrome. Earthly qi is about to change. Regulate the Guest Qi of Yangming: tonify with sour, drain with pungent, drain/descend with bitter. Year grain should be white, inter-grain should be glutinous millet, so dryness does not become evil. This is the transformation of the Six Qi.
At the transition of year qi, balanced fire is above, metal qi is depressed. Treatment should involve draining, calming each qi, maintaining clarity and stillness, so evil qi naturally declines and returns to its origin. This is the general principle of treatment.
